Abstract Photography as Art

What is Abstract Art? Abstract art uses a visual language of shape, form, color and line to create a composition which may exist with a degree of independence from visual references in the world. Art that does not attempt to represent external reality, but seeks to achieve its effect using shapes, forms, colors, and textures. Most people when thinking of Abstract Art think of mediums such as painting and sculpture. But photography can also be considered abstract art. An abstract photograph may isolate a fragment of a natural scene in order to remove its inherent context from the viewer, it may be purposely staged to create a seemingly unreal appearance from real objects, or it may involve the use of color, light, shadow, texture, shape and/or form to convey a feeling, sensation or impression. My photo above, which I named Dragon in the Night, is considered to be abstract art. For this photograph I used smoke as my subject. I basically just used a black background and smoke from a incense stick to create it. I did not modify or manipulate the smoke in Photoshop (which some people will do), I was just lucky that the smoke formed this dragon like image for me. I hope you enjoyed by blog post and feel free to respond back or browse some of my abstract art.
