Joining Or Creating A Niche

Throughout all the decades that I've been selling my particular tangible art, I'm convinced that I created my own unique niche.

And been rather successful at it.

Yet, when I think my art would fit in existing niches, it never seems to work.

When it comes to my virtual digital POD art, I have never been able to create any sort of an individual niche.

And the existing POD niches, are so extensive, my work gets completely lost

What are , if any, your experiences with niches?

Everything I have is niche based. Specific jobs, animals etc. The AI stuff i'm making will fill into those groups, just like the digital art does. Much under the theme of vintage.

The way I see it, my niche is ME. What I like to create. What I'm interested in. In the past, I tried to figure out a niche to fit into, and all that did was stress me out. So I'm going to create what I like. And I do sell a bit, so perhaps I'm going in the right direction.

Most of the artwork that I create is produced because it is what I want to create, however, I fell into a fairly specific niche when I started drawing and painting portraits of people's homes - or on the rare occasion businesses. Realtors and others contact me to do a drawing or a painting of a home, which becomes a very meaningful gift to give to someone who may be selling their lifelong home, buying their first home, etc. The majority of these portraits are commissions, done in a highly detailed style and to me is very therapeutic to do.

Very cool, Robert. Years ago, I did an acrylic painting of a neighbor's house on commission. When the husband died, his wife told me that painting was a comfort to her, and that she would take it with her when she moved.

Pen and ink is a tricky medium. Your work is outstanding!

The art I make is always inspired by what currently occupies my thoughts at the moment regardless
the subject matter... and the execution, the making of it, is whatever medium/material is at hand
so I think I have no niche I can name or so many niches, it's like a climbing wall.

I'm naturally eclectic. Perhaps that is a niche in itself but... The real reason I joined FAA was to promote my 3D stereo anaglyphs, side-by-side stereo pairs, and perhaps magic eye works. Among those stereo formats, I would also include "out of frame" and other techniques for further out of the mainstream interests.

I have sold some via FAA but I soon found out, the company doesn't care too much about "out of the mainstream" work. I was basically forced to turn back to the "normal" 2D work that everyone else does. I still remain eclectic, but my 3D stereo niche has fallen to the waste-side as a result. I know from the sales, there is a 3D stereo community our there. I don't know of any other artist sites that would cater to them.
