Washing A New Screen Printed Shirt

Hi everyone. I’m looking for some guidance on washing my new shirt I had made! The color is very nice and I don’t want intro fade or crack. I know stay away from heat, so would hand washing in the cold sink or tub work? Would it make the colors fade or the image crack? I really want to keep this shirt in good condition!

Thanks

Hello Joe, they are machine washable. When I get it, I will wash mine in cold water.

You can also have a look inside for other specific instructions.

What are the chances of the image fading its color cracking? The image doesn’t feel blended into the shirt, more so feels printed on. And I don’t want it to crack!

Of course not, I understand. I can only speak on a general basis. I will take extra care of mine. If you worry maybe it's best you simply hand wash it with a delicate soap and let it dry naturally, away from direct sun.

Turn inside out. Wash in cold water. No bleach. Tumble dry low, no fabric softener. No dry cleaning.

My dryer has an extra low setting, and I use that. But most dryers only have low. Just remember to turn inside out and avoid high heat.

Edited to add, you could hand wash as Lucia said, and lay flat to dry, but I get way too much wrinkling when I do that. And then I have to iron…and you can’t iron over the art…

Just be gentle, use cold water, gentle wash and spin, etc., and avoid high heat.

Nothing lasts forever tho. :)

Thank you, Donna, you are right! It's a great tip, I forgot to mention it, because I always wash garments inside out!

I use cold water wash and hang to dry; not the dryer.

I use a 40 wash and then put on a hanger and dry normally. (Don't have a tumble dryer as they are expensive to run)

Donna, it's true, but I don't lay it flat to dry, I hang it outside and the wind will kind of iron it :)

I don't know if Joe is still reading, maybe not, but anyway I forgot to say that the way shirts are stored is also important, to avoid lines in the artwork and in general:
I never fold them. I roll them like a tube.

Hey Lucia I’m def still reading as well as still undecided what to do ha!

So I’m leaning towards just a sink wash in cold water with a splash of detergent. Rub under the arms lightly etc and let it soak maybe 10-15 mins. Press the water out and hang up to dry!

I just don’t want the washing machine to make the image fade or crack. These shirts are really special so I want to keep them in good condition!

Thank you, Joe, for replying, I found this article written by someone who has 20 years experience in the screen printing industry.
https://www.rushordertees.com/blog/tips-for-washing-and-drying-screen-printed-t-shirts/

He adds these tips:
Hard water can damage fabrics and prints. In case, add a drop of vinegar to the water. It can even brighten the colors.
Use a thick plastic hanger rather than clothespins. Use the rounded kind.
When you can't hang it outside, let it dry in front of a fan.

I wish you all the best
