I've been using Affinity Photo for years and highly recommend.

I use photoshop for Raw, save as Tiff to work on the image with Picture Windows, which is very good, before save the final file in Jpeg. Picture Windows is free and one of the best.

This is a thread about the Affinity Photo sale which is a Photoshop "alternative" for some, and a seriously more robust program with a much more modern interface than Picture Window Pro.

One does not have much need for a free program like Picture Window Pro (whom most have never heard of or ever considered) if they pay monthly for Photoshop or have Affinity Photo.

The macOS version of Affinity Photo was received favourably by professional photographers, and Apple named it as the best Mac app of 2015.[24][25]

It's an excellent piece of kit for just $25 if you don't have Photoshop or want to try to get away from renting Photoshop. A free 90-day trial is available to see if you can live with it and dump your Photoshop subscription, or to see if it is useful.

I gave up PS last year, the typical $120 per year.

I don't mind the more robust program with a much more modern interface. What is important for me is it to be light running and fast.

But anyway, Have a good Affinity sale.

I have had Affinity Photo for years. I do not use it, but upgrade it every time it happens. I bought it for when (not if) adobe changes the price of the CC photo plan.

I have played with it a little to see how it works and it is a gem of a replacement for PS. To this date I am surprised adobe has not sued them because the interface, features, and workings are so similar to PS it's shocking. If you are proficient with PS, you are already 90% with Affinity. In some respects it is better than PS because it was built from the ground up for current technology - it is not a patchwork of wedges like PS is and has been for years.

However, there are some small things I don't like about it. For one, it doesn't play well with some plugins/presets/looks. However, this may have been fixed - I haven't checked in months.

I also do not like the way it demands the Aero desktop be enabled in Windows - this was a top complaint among users. However, this, too, may have been fixed.

All-in-all, tho, it is a good replacement for PS with the features and operations so closely resembling PS that it is uncanny.

And the best thing? You own it. You don't have to rent it. You OWN it ! (imagine that !)

Edit: this sale concerns me, tho. Perhaps Serif is not doing well financially. It would be a shame and a big loss if Affinity would disappear.

The Aero desktop requirement is a Windows 7 thing and does not apply to people running Windows 10 or IOS.

The sale is not concerning at all to me. Corel recently gave away $998 in software (Painter, PSP, and others) for just $25 and Escape Motions just gave away $489 worth of software (Rebel 3 and others) for $25. The revenue they generated from the $25 was actually far less because a portion went to charity and a portion went to Humble Bundle.

It's a sale...many companies have sales quite frequently. Corel, Escape Motions, Topaz, ON1, ACD, Skylum, etc. etc. etc. --> have all run sales.

I was interested in it quite awhile ago, but then forgot about it. At only $25.00... I got mine today.

I may now have more time to try and learn how to use it.

I wonder how it compares to Gimp which is what I use in place of PS. I paid for Corel Paintshop Pro and didn't like it. Went back to Gimp.

Is it similar to PS? Or easy to learn? I don't really want to take the time for a big learning curve.

Affinity Photo is probably the photo editor that comes closest to being able to battle Photoshop in terms of functionality.

I have been using Affinity Photo for over 1½ years now, and to cut things short I don’t look back with longing to the Photoshop days. That is not to say that Affinity Photo is better than Photoshop.

To be honest, Affinity Photo lacks a few features, but most of these features are not even used by the majority of Photoshop users. So from that perspective, it is more than capable for replacing Photoshop.

I have too many editing programs and other image processing tools, but I do use them all on occasion. I have tried Gimp a couple of times in the past and never liked it...I know a lot of people do like the free program. I own a recent copy of PSP and used it a long time ago as well, but I don't dig it and I rarely use it.

I own these basic editors and DAMS.

Photoshop CC - My goto when using my plugins, filters, and when using the Canon plugin when I print here. I've been a PS user for close to 20 years and I am not a power user, but I use it quite a bit.

Lightroom - I don't use it a whole lot but I do use it for some jobs and tasks.

Zoner Studio X - My everyday editor and digital asset manager - it is a subscription model like Photoshop but less expensive and I like it a lot. I will send some files from Zoner to my other programs, including Photoshop.

Luminar - I use it some for filters and AI tools.

ON1 Photo Raw - I like it I just don't love it, but I do use a few features that it has on occasion

Paint Shop Pro - Never got back into it after using it a long time ago. It does have a few cool things I use on occasion but I much prefer the Photoshop interface and Photoshop itself.

Affinity Photo - I have been eyeing this for a couple of years and trialed it many months ago but didn't want to part with the money since I have so many other tools. When I saw this $24.99 price I jumped all over it and will see if I can slowly try to start transitioning away from Photoshop. I love the familiar interface and it seems to have the toolset I use on a day-to-day basis. The more I play with it the more I like it, but I am by no means an Affinity expert.

If this software can handle most of my plugins (which I have a lot fairly expensive ones) I am hoping it may be able to replace Photoshop. Now that I have plenty of time to play with it for only $25 I am a happy camper. If I ever go broke and can't pay Adobe I will still be good. ;) It comes fairly highly regarded so I was more than happy to part with the 25 bones.

I downloaded the free trial last night and giving it a try. Hopefully the sale will stick around long enough for me to get a feel for it. It's diffentely not as easy as Gimp and laid out differently than what I'm used too. Took me forever to find the option to change to a black or white brush for masking. I had to watch a video to find it because I'm used to it being in the tools bar. Then it took me about 30 min to figure out how to add an image as a layer. After some research I learned you have to use the place option under file which is very strange. I'm used to clicking add image as a layer.

I also find that the select brush isn't very good. I'm trying to replace a sky using a mask and when I use that bush to select area's I want to, it's selecting a lot more than that color. For example, it's a lighthouse pier and when I try to select the little open areas in the pier, it usually also selects part of the pier when I'm only clicking on the sky and I have the setting option to snap to edges. Doesn't seem to work as well as Gimp when it comes to finding the areas to magically select. Am I missing a setting somewhere to fix that?

I found this video which shows how similar it is to PS. It does look like the RAW editing is still better in PS, however I don't use PS. I may continue my routine of editing RAW in LR and them going to this program if I decide to get it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9fz4Pn_GSM&t=714s

I'm anxious to see how it works with HDR, because I don't have a program for that. Usually use LR's HDR option which is okay but could be better. Thanks again Don for letting us know about it! You rock!

I just wanted to again say Thank you to Don!!! This is now my new favorite program. I played with it yesterday for most of the day and I'm really loving it. I hope it's okay for me to share at lease one, but this is my first creation in Affinity Photo. It's already worth it at full price so it's a steel at half price.

Two things I need that I don't see in the videos are photomerge with advanced blending and the ability to do enlarging. I will find out :-)

Oh OK, thanks Don. I tried the panorama merge from 4 horizontal images and it was fantastic! I used the auto color and wow, my painting looked better than when I had merged it in Photoshop. I have not tried multiple rows of tiles yet. The feature that is missing for me is the new Preserve Details in PS CC 2018 and later. I used to use Blowup 3 but it does not seem to play well with my new computer. So far the Preserve Details has been a good replacement so I'll have to stick with PS for now.

You're right, no preserve details algorithm with Affinity Photo. While I own an older copy of Photoshop, and I have the Photographer CC plan for the current version which has Preserve Details 2.0, I use GigaPixel AI for almost all of my uprezzing. Yeah, it's pricey at $100 when not on sale, and it's quite slow if you don't have a good video card, but I love it!

Genuine Fractals used to be the "industry" standard ---> which is currently a part of ON1 Photo Raw (which I own) but I have not used it since I grabbed GigaPixel AI when it was basically still in beta.

This is so timely. Many of our students who had to go home early from Italy are now without a photo editing software. I just shared this software deal with them.

I’ve been using affinity photo for a few years now but after the last couple of updates on Windows the raw feature hasn’t worked as it should after editing in the raw persona I export into the develope module and it shows way over exposed. I’m thinking it’s an issue with my laptop. Have a Mac with it on and took the plunge at Christmas to get an iPad to use it on and have never looked back. Seem as fully featured as the desktop versions and battery life much better than my laptop. Would highly recommend especially as on sale at the moment.

I decided to try it out today. I wanted to see how the software handled focus stacking. Mind you I have an older version of photoshop and it is possible the newer versions focus stacking features have improved. I am very impressed with the results of Affinity Photo. It is very intuitive and not so far off from Photoshop that I would consider it a big learning curve. One does a bit of treasure hunting trying to find the features we have become use to. For instant adding metadata was kind of hidden. But ones I located the feature I was able to add my information with ease. The text tool is not as easy to figure out. I am sure in another few minutes this too is an issue of the past. The reason I have not updated photoshop is due to them going to subscription. As an artist we are small businesses and keeping our overhead low, is key. I simply did not want another monthly bill I needed to worry about. This was my very first image I prepared and I am not daunted by making the switch. Take a look and let me know. The re-size option did not give me as much control as I am use to, but it does create a small size and if it hold up this upload at an quality I can live with I can only recommend this software.

My first pixel editing software was Serif. Cheap, fairly easy to use, and really did a nice job. I'm going to have to give this a try. I'm thinking no matter what it would still be worth the $25.

I have a couple of questions for Don and anyone else who's been using it. How successful are you at getting PS plugins to work? I really only have one that's old but is very important to me. How does cloning compare to PS? I have not found anything that comes close to the detail that can be cloned with PS.

To be honest I have not loaded any plugins yet as I have been working with ON1 and ACD the past week or so. I am surprised to see many of my plugins working with ACD so I have hopes I will see similar results with Affinity.

I bought it this morning. The cloning functionality is excellent. Better actually than Photoshop CS2 anyway. I'm not interested in the latest PS because all I really use it for is cloning.
