Are You The Most Self Appreciating Person In The World?

Sorry, i have to bring the worst tasting dish this thanksgiving, but are you self deprecating, like me, and very accepting of negative experiences? And is this way of thinking an actual positve experience for you as it is me?

Or

Do you pretend to be positive in hopes of achievement?

which is it, Lisa...your title doesn't match the OP....self Appreciating or self-deprecating?

I firmly believe that what you put out there, comes back. Put it out there that you think you stink and the universe is only happy to oblige and make it your reality.

Lisa,

Where I work the family has two young kids. The boy is 11 and does not want to do any of his homework. His older sister pushes him to work.

The father finally took his video games away. So on Wednesday he was crying that the restaurant sucks. I agreed that the restaurants in reality is really bad. Meaning reality bites. It will bite all of his life. Then I added, "that is why all of us are pushing you to do your homework, so that you do not have to work here".

Now off his games, he got it. His personality day after day has been improving. He genuinely is a nice kid, but his life is tough. Yet if he works now, he has so much going for him.

I let reality bite, it creates growth. JMO

i think if it tastes bad, you should bring something that tastes good. there is nothing more delectable in saying, here, i brought the stuffing, its poison, enjoy.

your better off making a good recipe of it.

Lisa, you aren't bringing the worst tasting dish to TG if you haven't made it yet, or perhaps it's something you don't care for. There are a few things I won't be eating, but basically, I love it all. My favorite holiday, even though I don't eat turkey.

Marlene, on the other hand, if you put it out there that you stink, then you'll get lots of people saying, "no, no, you don't -- you're amazing." LOL. Kind of a perverse way to get compliments.

I've always been both self-deprecating and arrogant, so I'm covered.

Hey thank you for your responses. Mike, David and Marlene, you three have a lot in common! That is awesomely eye opening.

I just love living a slight bit on edge with a little fear, reality, or understanding that all is not entirely alright.

The desire for a more positive experience is in itself a negative one for me, not that you have to be like me. We are all unique.

So the way i will orchestrate my day will be to jog and feel my pain, clean my home and feel my disgust, then I will go dinner and manipulate someone to buy it, knowing full well that is wrong, and finally go to an art show only to be with those I love most but can't support. And the day will be done falling off the wagon again with a glass of Champaign or two.

This is positive for me, what's not to love? Except myself, of course. (Smile)

Oh Patricia, you Are brilliantly understanding of what I'm thinking.

Jake Smith

I appreciate self-deprecating humor, and I make fun of myself all the time. My motto has always been that I can't laugh at other things unless I can laugh at myself first!

But in terms of art, I try to realistically gauge my work. I know I'll never be a master of realism, so I find ways to express my vision that I think are interesting and fun. I think some of it is better than other artists' work and clearly worse than others. But ultimately, everyone has their own styles, opinions, tastes, and reasons. So when it comes to creating things, generally we are our own worst critics, and that can be a good way to improve the quality of our work.

When nothing is selling, it's difficult to stay positive, but I try to reassure myself that sticking to it and continuing to create will eventually yield results. I don't think it's "pretending to be positive" as you put it, because I am in general very positive. I think that reflects in my work also - bright colors, fun subjects, etc. Basically, being critical of your work is important to improve, but being positive and confident in your success is something I think an artist must strive for because it's too easy to get down and just quit.

Marlene Burns

Pat,
Tell me, what are those compliments really worth?

That's like lying about your age and saying you are 10 years older to get people to say you look fabulous.

and....as Jake said...I love self-deprecation when it is strictly for humor sake. My art is my life's work. I don't kid about that.

Sorry, very busy promoting those I care about, but wanted to take a moment to respond before I go hurt myself jogging.

Jake, I love self depreciation because it's so humorous to me and many people who are like this are best in their fields of study, from comedy to scientific innovation.

Marlene, you rock in every way possible!

Dave B/Jazz Debrie, you put out some of the best example the other day on another thread that was so awesome promoting of another artist that I am going to copy, and not share what exactly that is or was. Thank you for being you.

Iris Richardson

Every person does something really well. If the culinary site of you is not bring something to the table conversation other than food. Make a beautiful floral centerpiece etc. Show me one person who is good at everything? Embrace your gifts and accepts that you did not come into the world to do what others expect you to do.

David King

I bring my mouth and stomach, eating is something I do very well.

Roy Erickson

If it stinks and you know it stinks and people tell you no - it's wonderful - you did a great job - you KNOW they are lying to you and that won't make you feel any better - it might make you wonder if you could ever trust any of their judgement. Make a dish that is good and take it - if it's bad - and you know it's bad - don't take it - be sick - stay home - have a turkey sandwich instead.

Marlene Burns

Speaking of stuffing...I need a sure-fire killer stuffing recipe

Maybe I need a nap but, from title to comments, I can't make heads or tails of this discussion.

Patricia Strand

Wendy, I was just about to take a nap, lol. My brain needs a fresh scrub.

Lisa Kaiser

Hi Wendy, my title was to bring everyone in, of course, to pose a question about whether an artist is self promoting or not. The initial statement of bringing the worst dish is metaphorical for someone that knows they're awesome but plays down the awesomeness due to the knowledge that no one likes one that bloweth thy own horn.

What I am trying to learn is more about whether one gets more out the art experience by self promoting or self depreciation or a combo. There is no right or wrong on my threads, just thoughts and ideas.

Lisa Kaiser

Yeah, bring your recipes too, Thanks Marlene.

Geeat advice Mike Savad, that advice works with all things, be proud and take some pride with what you do.

Yesterday, I took devilled eggs to work and did the self depreciation thing...yet again, and two people started to agree with me. On a positive note, one who disaggreed ended up with a platter of eggs that he said would give him happiness for the entire weekend.

Janine Riley

I'm with Iris.
You all can fuss over recipes - & I'll be playing with the floral centerpiece and table display.

You can be awesome - w/o being a ridiculous braggart and blowing your own horn.
or , there are times you must blow your own horn. Like if there is a bear in front of you.

But anyhow.... you can bring your awesomeness to the table - & those that have the same taste and appreciation of your wares may gladly partake.

As far as self deprecation for attention , I don't appreciate when people over the age of 6 try to manipulate my emotions. I just no longer believe the onus is upon me
to carry someone else's dirty work.

And I love supporting others,

I always wondered why people lie and say they are a few years younger. Or try to make you play the guessing game.

/// Edit to Add .

What is wrong with loving, enjoying and appreciating your own work ?

I see several lovely faces and Stars who enjoy the process of creating ,and love their finished pieces.

Your work Lisa - is a celebration. There is joy in your color choices and painting process.
So what's not to love ?

Bring it on.

Abbie Shores

I don't tell people my age but I'm not expecting them to guess. I'm expecting them to not care and to mind their own business. Tbh

I'm also self deprecating. Again, that my business. I don't expect people to fawn over me. What I say is exactly what I mean

Lisa Kaiser

Me too, Abbie.

I am self deprecating a tiny bit because if I persue the feeling of being great, the less satisfied I feel about being great.

Persuing something anything from the stinkist but delectable devilled eggs to great art only reinforces the very fact: the lack of it.

Thank you, Janine!!!

Lisa, its all good...

My motto:

Anything worth doing is worth doing half-assed...

Patricia Strand

That's funny, Ed. I started out in life having the motto drummed into me (anything worth doing is worth doing right, blah blah). Now I pretty much follow yours.

I admire both humility and confidence in people. I wonder if those two traits can coexist side-by-side for artists.

Abbie Shores

I think they can, Patricia. I think it can often depend on the type of day they've had

David King

I'm confident in some things as an artist and not in others. it's not an either/or thing for me. I'm sure I look very unconfident to most people though, I don't like to brag or be the focus of attention. That's the main reason I'm focused on trying to sell online, though that's not working out too well.

Lisa Kaiser

Ed, your art is...well it leaves me speechless. Your gorgeous work upon Googling you is definately top shelf awesome.

David, your work, art, brushstrokes and words and other are very confident.

When I bring a dish to a Thanksgiving dinner, and I don't get the reaction, "What the Hell is This!!!" , I feel that all my efforts were for naught.

By the way, this year, I plan to use juniper berries as the main flavoring ingredient.

I became interested in juniper berries, when I started to make "Shirley Temple" gin and tonics...I gave up alcohol but still love the taste of gin

Abbie Shores

Must make some Sloe gin next year..... sorry... went off on a tangent then..blame young Roger

:::::smacking ED:::::

we go to my exes house ( cuz our children are all in THEIR town on thanksgiving holiday) and his wife tells me what to bring. I think she'd really like to tell me where to go! lol
This year it is stuffing...I think there is a subliminal message in that assignment...

I am not touching that one Marlene, but I like it... a lot!

Shelli Fitzpatrick

I think it is most artists nature to be self depreciating and as far as being humble that is a good thing but if you want to sell some art you need to get to a point where you can self promote and if you don't make someone believe that they will love your work why should they consider buying it? Is it so wrong to love your work enough that is becomes contagious to buyers?

Marlene Burns

Janice, last year she was complaining about him to me and asked me why I didn't 'fix' him.. I told her I tried for 26 years and we all know how that turned out. lol.
She sighed, he groaned and I laughed.

Lisa Kaiser

Shelli, nothing wrong with loving your work!!

I love the process of my artwork, but feel that it can be improved on most days. I don't think my art will meet my approval anytime soon. If, however, it came easy, I'm not sure I would engage at all.

Lisa,

When I worked my way through college life was not fun, except for the art classes. The hardware store was in a fairly wealthy neighborhood, but the clients were brutally demanding. I was putting in over 60 hours per week between school and work.

I asked for a reference letter when I was leaving. A retiree who worked there instructed how it should be written to the owner. So the owner per the directions asked me for five words to describe my job performance/work ethic.........

I have applied that to my About section. It is meant as a presentation to sell.

I'll let you figure out if it is effective in telling people buy this work.

Okay, I'll promote you Dave. The amazing thing about you is that you always have a story and within it, there is a life lesson. Maybe you can apply these life lessons to your artwork.

One day, not long ago you had a life lesson for me. I can't remember your words, but it was something along the lines of not taking on another person's emotions. Let them own their own darn mental problems. I loved that life lesson, but I forgot your words entirely. I think if you are not blogging, you should definitely start.

Thanks, but I have a lot to do. No blogging for me...as of now.

Dave, a writer must write. You are a story teller. You are missing a niche that belongs to you. You have a story to tell us, own it and... Tell to the world. Blog on some top blog...I know nothing about blogging and hate to do it, but your words have an effect.

Lisa,

Consider this a micro blog. I have been there and done that for about twenty years. But it is constantly in response to others. Not as short essays going out into the abyss. LOL

Your Avatar looks great as usual. I would crack the lenses.
