My Impulse Buy Of A Repeating Rifle "golden Boy"

It happens to the best of us, you go to the store to buy a $10 item or just to look around for something and then out of no where you shell out $500 dollars on something that you had no idea you were going to purchase. This happened to me today. I went to walmart to look at bicyles because I ordered a motorized bicycle kit online for a build and I wanted to see what bikes were available, I wasn't going to buy the bike until I received the gasoline motorized kit first. I was just window shopping but I walked buy the sporting goods department and of all things a rifle caught my eye. That's all she wrote! A background check later and I was being escorted to my truck by the store manager with my new Rifle!

How did that happen?

I wasn't even in the market for a rifle. It's something I have wanted since as far back as I can remember but it was more of a teenage want. Well when all is said and done I must say I made a great purchase and I'm very happy with my new Rifle.

The design is a traditional cowboy rifle dating back to 1860, it's made in the USA by Henry Repeating Arms Company, a well built quality rifle with a forged steel octogon barrel and has American walnut stock and a beautiful brasslite receiver and buttplate. Brasslite is made of aluminum that has been nickle plated and then has "gold" brass plating over that with a special coating that won't patina. It's a lever action meaning the lever has to be cocked after each shot to load a bullet into the receiver after each shot. The magazine holds 16 to 20 rounds depending on the type of round used. The rifle is a .22 caliber LR

Truth is I can't wait to shoot it, but first I want to familiarize myself with the local rules/laws so I went to the Florida Wildlife Commission Office to get the most updated information.

I really want to get a CZ Scorpion but my license has the wrong address and my passport has expired so I have to wait til I get that back

Gilbert that's some high tech looking weapon. Maybe I need to stop watching Bonanza and Rifle man reruns. Lol!

I wanted an AA-12 automatic shotgun, then I realized I live in Canada were all fun toys are illegal...

Classic guns are still fun, Mario! Get yourself revolver next.

Mario Carta

That's to bad Jeste, even here where I live lot's of regulations about where to shoot.

Gilbert I'm all revolvered out, my first revolver was a S&W .38 Police Special which was the standard issue in Miami PD in 1981, then we went to the Glock 9mm. I also had my share of shotgun qualifying and bruised and sore shoulders. This Henry .22 weighs in at like 6.5 lbs and although I have not shot it yet it's going to be easy on the shoulder. :-)

I guess I need to buy a scope now and a case and a cleaning kit and a rifle rack and a membership to the range and some licenses for the wildlife managment area and permits..........maybe a Henry shirt and hat.:-)

Man, that impulse purchase is getting more expensive by the minute! lol

Mario Carta

David, that's exactly what I was thinking, one consolation is the ammo is pretty inexpensive, I purchased like 200 rounds for like $17 dollars.

There was a time I was considering getting into black powder rifles but after counting up the cost and not knowing where I'd find the time or place to play with them I decided against it.

David, the funny thing is I had not even thought about buying this rifle, it just happened.

Maybe you can shoot pythons. I hear they are taking over Florida.

Mario Carta

No Ed,I don't think so, I'm not into killing animals unless it's for food or if something is attacking me, never for sport and then the only thing I would consider hunting here is , quail, turkey, rabbits and maybe a small wild pig. I doubt I will even have much opportunity for those but it will get me into the public hunting areas of the Wild life managment areas, I'm sure I'll be shooting more photos or film than critters.

Mario! That Henry is one sweet rifle!!!!! Nicely done.

Mario, I like that you're not into the sport, and if you're round this way..........there's a wild turkey or 1,000 roaming in and out of our village........I don't think they're 'protected',
so
when you've got time, you're welcome here with that gorgeous irresistible (to me) rifle.
I think too that the history of weaponry is reallly interesting.

Hate those shots in the news of 'hunters'(not) with their 'trophies'......'scuse pun.

Mario Carta

Thank you Gary, I have it laying on the dinning room table and since I haven't purchased a case or a proper display rack for it I can't bare to put it back in it's box, it's not meant to be hidden . Lol!

Mario Carta

Vivian I never did much if any hunting except when I was a young boy living on a farm for a time and then it didn't go beyond doves, now I don't think I could even do that, as I get older I'm getting to where I don't really care to kill any living thing. I tried rasing rabbits a few years ago because I remember how good they tasted when my parents cooked them. I had to sell my rabbits and cages because I was just to attached to the cute critters.

Maybe in the wild I might consider taking a wild one, and that's only because I'm not crazy about going to a range to shoot, so the only other option for me is private property and i don't know of anyone or public wild life managment areas for "hunting" since they frown on recreational shooting. Where I live people shoot guns in their back yards all the time but that's not really a wise option for me either.

If only you were not so down under, turkey might be an option. Lol!

"I guess I need to buy a scope" Nooooooooo! You put a peep site on a lever gun!!

I happen to love lever guns, I have 4 of them all big bore and I love shooting each one of them, I just can't believe you haven't shot yours yet :-)
Good for you on your new firearm, I am success you'll love it even more once you are able to shoot it!!

TL your're right scope is really not needed, the gun has it's sites. I haven't found a suitable safe and legal place to shoot it. I might just have to go to a range. I don't really like being around a lot of other people with loaded guns that are shooting.

This is why I was exploring the Wild Life Management areas I have access to, but the regulations are very strick and there are so many rules and all individual to the particular area. At this point I'm thinking it might be best to explore a private property site.

The options are Private property (requires permission), public lands (highly regulated) or gun ranges (lots of people with guns), a bit of a dilemma.

That's an awesome impulse buy! You'll have fun with that for sure.

For the most part, gun ranges are a safe bet. They will have a suitable backstop, and the club or owner will have covered all the legal requirements or they would have been shut down. Most people on gun ranges practice safe gun handling or they get thrown out.

A .22LR is a small projectile but those things can travel up to a mile under the right circumstances. Probably not a lot of energy left well before a mile...but still.

I have an old 22 bolt action Wichester with a scope that my dad gave me when I was a kid. I used to be able to hit almost anything I could see but doubt I could do the same anymore. Haven't shot it since I returned from Vietnam in 69'.

If I were going to buy something for hunting I'd probably look at a bigger caliber. The 22 might not do the trick unless your thinking of rabbits and squirrels or other very small game.

Mario 'Lucas McCain' Carta... Sweet!
i agree with Patrick: beautifully engineered and artfully crafted...

Chuck Connor's (Lucas McCain's) rifle was a tricked out 1892 model Winchester 44-4... he could shoot that thing with one hand and ambidextrously... can't wait to see your Rifleman film ... on second thought, don't do it unless you're all alone and wearing Kevlar boots... lol

i own a AR-7 Survival 22L Rifle that i bought in the mid-late 60s. It's a semiautomatic takedown that all the parts can be disassembled; the barrel, trigger and loaded magazine are stowed inside the waterproof plastic buttstock... it weighs 3.5 pounds and will put meat in the pot with its accuracy. i carried it on long multi week treks into the wilderness on hiking and canoe trips, The AR-7 was designed and built by ArmaLite in 1950s... Henry makes it now... Oh did i mention mine can float, whether assembled or stowed, due to the design of the buttstock, which is filled with plastic foam. it's a cool but unattractive little piece and i always feel like an assassin when i'm assembling it...lol

Andrew, your right the range is looking like the most likely place at least until I can find a better alternative on some private land.

JC, 45.-70 wow! that's fire power, sure to take down godizilla with a single shot! Your son is gonna love his birthday gift of a 357 carbine rifle.

David, if I was going for the large game I would agree a larger caliber but for what I really want to do .22Lr is perfect, maybe a rabbit or quail with a little luck. The ammo is inexpensive enough and also for home protection it will do the job.

Ed, Lol! , Lucas was my man! Love that show!!! After cutting my finger the other day while filming the making of a pork sandwich, trust me, no way in heck that I will attempt to handle my rifle with my camera in hand. That AR-7 sounds "killer" for sure, I get the assassin feeling. :-)

The first firearm I ever owned was a an AR-7. I still have it. Mine was made by Charter Arms. I bought it brand new in the 80's...probably 82 or 83-ish.

I had a problem with it in the early 90's, it started to shoot full auto because something wore out inside. First time it happened it scared the crap out of me! Haha. I loaded up the 8 round magazine and fired off a couple shots, on the second shot it just emptied itself out. I got it repaired and used it for awhile until the problem came back. I took it to a different gunsmith for repair again. I put a few magazines through it to ensure that it was repaired and put it away. I haven't fired it in over 20yrs. Maybe I should break it out and have some fun.

I have had one version or another of the S&W 686 for 30 years. (The big revolver in on my page) I carry the 45 these days when I carry a big gun as it is easier to conceal and the 357 is actually my wife's.

I am also a huge fan of lever actions and have usually had one lever action or another since I was 16. I generally had Marlins until they were bought by Remington and the Freedom Group and ended up having major quality control issues for a few years. I think they have them fixed now but didn't trust that so ended up going with Henry this time and will likely stick with them from now on.

I bought my older son a 30-30 when he was 15 but now that he is out on his own a 30-30 makes a poor home defense weapon in an apartment building as there is just too much penetration and that is why I decided to go with a 357 rifle for the younger one. It is still big enough to hunt anything he likes IF he ever decides to go hunting but can use ammo that won't over penetrate for home defense purposes.

Mario Carta

Andrew that AR-7 is interesting and Henry has one, but I like my lever action better. Lol I still have not been able to find the place or time to go try it out and it's killing me, I almost want to go out in my yard which is legal according to a certain Florida state law, but I don't want to challenge or put that law to the test, I will just have to wait.

Since I'm not considering going after large game I just can't justify going with a larger caliber rifle than the 22Lr, I did consider the 22mag but passed on it since I have more ammo options with the 22Lr,. Today I had a deer dart out from some woods on the side of a road I was driving down on my way to see a customer. I do like the 30-30 Henry, maybe down the road I'll. :-)

Andrew Pacheco

Oh, the lever gun is much better I'm sure!

I'm actually on the market for a better .22 rifle myself. For the past few years, I mostly only shoot my 12 gauges when I hunt birds and take my daughter trap shooting from time to time.

My daughter expressed an interest in doing some shooting other than shotgunning, so I was out shopping for a more traditional .22 rifle than the AR-7 when I happened along a deal on a Ruger MkII 22/45 pistol. It's basically the old Ruger classic .22 pistol, but it has a polymer frame and grip and the angle of the grip and controls are like that of a 1911 style pistol. My daughter and I have a ball with it!

You must be going nuts wanting to try that thing! There must be a local range that lets you pay by the hour or something if you don't have a membership anywhere. Especially in FL...it's a much more gun friendly state than up here in RI.

I had am AR-7 once, it was a cool little gun, but the housing was broke on the side that hold the magazine, and no way to repair it so I got rid of it.

When it comes to lever actions I'm a Winchester guy, or should I say John Browning designed, my 45-70 is a Browning 1886, my 30-30, AND 45 colt are both Winchester 94s, but my all time favorite is my Browning 71 348 WCF, I love that gun!

My carry guns are a Springfield XD 45, and a S&W body guard 38 revolver, of my other handguns of which there are many, the fun ones to shoot are first and foremost my Desert Eagle in 50 ae and second my S&W 460, did I mention I like big guns :-) and if it's getting dark out I put a few rounds through my Automag in 30 carbine that thing throws one gigantic fire ball!

I hate most commercial ranges as very vwry few allow tactical shooting drills.

When training for real world scenarios it is not particularly useful if you can only start with your weapon out of its holster abd shoot one round at a time.

I build my own tactical ranges on my land or family land. Even just plinking with a 22lr is much more enjoyable in the woods IMHO.

I got an old Marlin pump action my grandma gave me. She taught me to shoot. I remember going to the dump with her, in Minnesota, to shoot cans. Well, she was a pretty good teacher because I was an expert rifleman in the Army. First half of the test I was tied with another guy for first place out of 250 troops. The second half involved running and I hurt my knees earlier, so I finished 10th. In practice the day before, I put three rounds through the same hole at 30 yards prone. The DI said I cheated and called me every name in the book in front of 250 troops. I had to stay after class. Thanks Grandma.

I guess there are some advantages to living in the west, for the most part if it's forest land you can shoot on it, and the forest is like 15 minutes away, same for BLM land unless it's Nevada BLM land :-)

My son has a Henry Mare's Leg 22, that is one fun gun to shoot, it has the large lever ring, but we never did figure out how to spin it like the rifleman, on a side note the rifleman's gun has a little tang that you lift up so it will pull the trigger when you close the lever, we were playing rifleman and just using our finger as the little tang, that will pinch your finger!!!

It seams to be a very well built gun, glad to see manufacturers in the US building quality firearms, Mario you should get years of enjoyment out of this "impulse buy"!!!

TL I spent all afternoon looking at recreation land/ hunting land listings, it's nice to dream and one never knows when a great deal presents it's self. :-) we don't have BLM land in Florida, but I was looking at something called mitigation land as well. Looking for a place to legally shoot a gun in an other than indoor range setting is a rare thing around here, and the thing is we have so many hunters in the area. My curiosity is now kicking in.

Mario, I used to have a Winchester that I really liked and was able to do the Rifleman thing with it. Then a one armed man heard I had one and tried to talk me out of it cause he always wanted one. I had to say goodbye to it....sigh.
