Two Jars

Jesus said to them, Fill the waterpots with water. So they filled them up to the brim (John 2:7)

It hit me one day as I was studying John 2 and the wedding at Cana. You may remember the story. Jesus is attending a wedding ceremony and they run out of wine. He instructs the servants to completely fill stone jars with water and, he turns this plain, ordinary water into the most delicious wine.

What I found inciteful and inspiring was picturing the servants bringing jars of different colors, shapes, sizes, and some cracks to Jesus. Yet, when he touched the jars, the water inside miraculously turned to “good wine.” He took ordinary water inside a few cracked and differently colored pots and turned it into something very good.

My Two Jars painting is a visual of not just some cracked and multi-colored pots, but a visual of you and me, and how we’re different colors, different sizes, different shapes, and we all have a few “cracks” from the past. But, like the jars the servants brought to Jesus, He can do the same transformation with us as we bring ourselves (differences and all) to Him and His touch. Jesus takes us as we are—cracks and all shapes and sizes—and freely gives us overflowing joy, love, favor, and grace beyond what we can think or imagine. It doesn’t matter who we are, what color or cracks we have—Jesus accepts us and can transform us.

In Mathew 11:28-30 Jesus says, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy-laden and overburdened, and I will cause you to rest. [I will ease and relieve and refresh your souls.] Take My yoke upon you and learn of Me, for I am gentle (meek) and humble (lowly) in heart, and you will find rest (relief and ease and refreshment and recreation and blessed quiet) for your souls. For My yoke is wholesome (useful, good—not harsh, hard, sharp, or pressing, but comfortable, gracious, and pleasant), and My burden is light and easy to be borne.”

With His simple touch Jesus gave simple water stored in cracked pots new life. He restored the wedding celebration. He will do the same for us. No matter what our size, color, or how many cracks we have, Jesus can rescue, restore, refresh and renew us.
