Aren't you?
Most feel like they are.
Most think they have something unique to offer.
Does everyone have value?

Does everyone have value?......Beyond imagination or dreams or conjecture of any kind.

"Does everyone have value?"
Presumably the lowest of the low can have value... even if only to serve as an example of what not to emulate.
Without getting too religiously philosophical, let's just say there may be reasons for things we don't understand or could possibly comprehend.
To put it easier terms... Could there be light without darkness?
"Most think they have something unique to offer."
I love the humorous phrase, "You're unique, just like everyone else!"

Thanks, Ronald.
One of those things where I'm not sure how it came to be and probably couldn't repeat.
I like that phrase, Brian.
What is the lowest of the low?
Of course, David.
Are you willing to?
No I am not willing to say people are not special. You are misunderstanding my question.
Besides I think someone saying that does not have much regard for themselves.

It's human to feel like a unique snowflake, but few are truly special. By definition most of us are average. Perhaps artists are outliers compared to the general population to some extent, but within the general artist group, again the majority of us have to be average.
The question of value is different, though. It would be hard to find anyone without value of some sort.

If I'm so special, how come I always played right field and never chosen to be short stop.?

Most people have the potential to be "special." A lot has to do with chance, luck and parenting. Bad parents frequently raise bad children who turn to the dark side of life. But generally speaking, yes most of us are special in one way or the other.

Yet David K, even in the generality of 'speck in the masses'...The light that is reflected, by the collection, masses, of stars, has had far reaching implications to humans since all times. Where the brighter light is a concentration of clusters of mere 'specks'...
I wonder if there is in fact something that is missed in our imply of 'special'?? Just thinking and questioning out loud...
By definition not everybody can be special, (generally speaking that is) "If everybody is special then nobody is special". We all can be special in our own little sphere of influence however.
I am special only when I am hurting or sick - ask my wife - then I'm special - if to no one else - to myself. And I require 'special' treatment. Otherwise I'm not that special nor am I ordinary - not extra-ordinary - just my own different self.

"Besides I think someone saying that does not have much regard for themselves. " No, most likely they have not much regard for others.

I'm special...to somebody. To the world in general, no I'm just a speck in the masses.
DK,
Not to single you out at all, but to make a broader point.....
Most of you will see a doctor when you are in dire need sometime during your life. I was raised by an extremely professional doctor. His philosophy would say you mattered a great deal to your loved ones and in his care.
Does there need to be more just to find road rage and justify it? Dad would just have found that to be childish.

Roger,
I played right field as well. Sometimes it matters more to play the game than to sit it out.
I called you yesterday. I hope you got my call. Check your cell phone.
My plans changed. Hope all is well. Eventually I may make the pilgrimage to Washingtonville.

Edit:
Joe,
You beat me to it...with a video no less.
The video with Micheal Jordan is a classic

Roger, I knew exactly what Marlene was talking about, but didn't realize who it was until I found the video.
The Senator aspect throws a whole new spin on it.

It's all subjective, so it really matters not what anyone thinks of anyone else as being special or not, what matters is if you think your special. Everyone is unique, if you don't believe that, get fingerprinted and see if any other human being on this planet has the same fingerprints as you.
I'm not sure if everyone is special, but everyone has something special about them. There's something they do or ability they have that's better than anything else about them. Sometimes the adventure of discovering that "something" is just life happening. What you do with that ability is a life choice you make which may alter your destiny. Knowing your ability is one thing, but making good use of your gift is something else all together. We all have potential, but I don't believe anyone really knows the full extent of it.

I maintain none of us is unique. Unique means singular, unmatched, nothing to compare. We humans have oodles of similaritites that make us all slightly special versions of one another. It's like flowers on a shrub. Each is different, but none is unique. Their common traits outweigh the details that make them special.
We all will experience pain and grief, and joy and love.
We all have messed up families in some regard
We all have strengths and weaknesses
I could go on and on about what makes us the same.
Even people we consider to be exceptional; Galileo, DaVinci, Curie, Hawking... They have more that makes them like your average joe than they do that makes them different.
I tend to take the definition of "unique" literal. None of us share precisely the same DNA, there for we are all unique. That doesn't have anything to do with being special or outstanding or anything, it just is.
Cynthia,
We have much more in common than differences with Rhesus monkeys (93 percent DNA)
and
All will experience pain and grief, and joy and love.
All have messed up families in some regard
All have strengths and weaknesses
I guess, that we and they are just a bunch of average Joes together

And ,To me,
The one thing we maintained from the natural state when we became conscious of our own particular existence, was an imposed sense of commonality....That was done for apparent self preservation.
For we gave up a degree of freedom, for the benefit of the whole and the perceived security of the individual (each and everyone of us).
That is why we are so much alike

Every Living Thing
By: Ervin M. Drake
Dedicated to John McConnell, Founder of Earth Day
Verse:
This beautiful planet Earth,
This paradise we inhabit,
This home of the Redwood, Magnolia and Oak,
The Eagle the Whale and the Rabbit.
This bountiful Mother Earth,
This wonder who gave us our birth,
As She did for the Moss and the Lichen and Fern,
She has a lesson She'd like us to learn:
Refrain:
Every Living Thing is special,
Every Living Thing, unique,
And Every Living Thing would tell us so
If Every Living Thing could speak.
Every Living Thing has feelings,
Every Living Thing knows pain,
And, I guess, on that level we are all connected
In an endless living chain.
Every Living Thing has beauty,
Depending on your point of view,
And just as much right to be here
As the things we call "humans" do.
The link that unites all beings
Can be told in a simple phrase:
Every Living Thing
Needs another living thing
To share its nights and days!

Sorry Ricardo. To me, winning an Oscar, a Grammy, wouldn't make you special... just a celebrity. There are many many many non-celebrities that work just as hard and harder at their jobs and don't get higher pay or even a pat on the back for what they do. Celebrities have so many award events that they now have to refer to it as "Award Season!". In my opinion, they're no more special than the hard working Joe (or Josephine) who works to feed their families. They're just not the privileged few that make it to the limelight.
LOL. Wasn't me, David. :P
I think there are 2 levels of "being special":
1- subjective level ("I'm special because I think I'm special")
2- objective level (I've created something that's recognized by many people).

Have you ever had a pet you loved and then one day it died? did you just go down to the pet shop and get another one? or did you miss that pet and know that he/she was irreplaceable because "You" no one else knew he was special? My cat Max was special and unique, if a cat who produces no art, wins no awards, gets little or no recognition other than from his keeper and can be special and unique, certainly all human beings should be considered as such.
None the less he was special and unique. So, now my question is how many others does it take for the so called "objective collective consciousness" require for Max to be "truly special" ?
Unless the popular consensus is unanimous and absolute we are only dealing with subjective opinions not something objective.

Brian,
RE: Celebrities
With all those working on a movie
And the millions being spent......It can be a great boffo film or a major disaster, all dependent on the choice of the leading celebrity

Yep, "special" is a subjective term.

Joe, he was extremely social by cat standards. He was found abandonded and in very bad shape, I guess he was just so grateful to find another home. He was a long haired Persian.

I'm noticing that only a couple of people in here are willing to say that they themselves are special.
Maybe it's all about the special sauce...
Joe: I'm not saying I'm special because it depends on who I'm talking to whether they think I'm special or not. Whatever "special" is.
Pass the special sauce -- after I've eaten some, I'll know I have something special inside me. Even if nobody saw me eat it.

If Special is different....is it unique?
We all matter. Is that special enough?
Are any of us stars? We are in an industry with stars. Many of the stars as people are not special as in great philanthropists.
So before any of us call ourselves 'special' Joe please tell me what it would take to put the mantle on?
Dave
I like where Cheryl took this.
Special isn't something we are, but something we offer.
Perceive something as such, treat it as such, and it becomes so.
David, you're special.

That was the joke, but in all seriousness, I enjoy your interaction in this forum.
You've taught me a lot, believe it or not, and I appreciate that.

Joe,
I am currently in another thread arguing I am not strange, or keeping it positive. Thing is on this thread I am very strange. LOL
Joe, I admire your painting skills. Wish you could produce a lot more. But skill is not what I am after. Not that I am lacking. It is not the end all and be all of art. It used to be hundreds of years ago.
