Looky.Gallery is a new website where art lovers can rate artworks. Based on their ratings, the recommendation system will recommend artwork based on others will similar ratings. Simply go to the Artists page, at http://Looky.Gallery/artist, login, and input your Fine Art America profile page URL. Once your approved, your artwork will appear.

Art lovers rate with a simple thumbs-up or thumbs-down. If they like the artwork, they can click the info button and link directly to your piece on Fine Art America.

It's a match-maker for art lovers. And, it's completely free for artists and art lovers.

I'm one of the creators of the site. The plan is to add more sites (like Vango, Etsy, Amazon, etc.), and eventually allow artists to upload their own artwork. We needed to start somewhere and Fine Art America represents a lot of artists and is very reputable.

To add your artwork: Click on "Artists" on the menu bar, Click login and login using your Facebook or Twitter account, then you will be able to enter your FAA profile page. The site visits your profile page and will display your artwork. Users (artists and not-artists) can rate artwork. The "recommendation" engine will start learning what you like and display artwork liked by people with similar taste.

Also, users can click the blue info button and link to your piece on Fine Art America where they can purchase your work.

It's early on. Hopefully, we're successful and will be able to keep adding functionality.

It's thumbs up or thumbs down at the moment, whereas 1-5 might work better, giving strength of preference.

Jeff, thank you for sharing.

Is it working on the RSS feed? How are you getting the images?

the format is a bit hard to use. its not obvious to click and drag to the right or left to say yes or no to something. and it could take forever to see my images. and despite saying yes to one, when i reloaded it, the same one appeared again. and of course the other thing is, i just saw a number of badly blurred images, stuff that would never print. i don't see a way to pass out of one artist if i have no thoughts on the image at all.

there also isn't a mix up of artists, i have to go through an entire batch of paintings before i can go to the next.

interesting i just went through a batch, and now its just a white screen. i seemed to have run out.

when i click on artists, i only see myself, and not other artists.

i think it would be easier for a buyer to use if it was listed by artist, type of art, and stuff they may actually like (subjects). and or if there was an option to tell the artist, that the image is ok, but its so blurred, its a nope.

also the buyer/looker should know why they are there, what and why they are doing what they are doing. and there should be a way to go back a page if you accidentally left it, and might have wanted to see it.

Why we should upload the works, why not just dealing with the FAA profile we provided??

Mike Savad

you don't upload works there, you add your link and the system sucks pictures from here. the site is set up sort of like a tinder dating app.

You are not loading the images. The images are staying here but showing there (without looking) and the idea is not new but is an original concept in this instance. I think it is a novel idea and could be useful

I am just interested in knowing how the images are pulled to the site and if it is through a datafeed api or rss. Not for any bad reason, just personally curious

Jeff S

Thank you everyone for the feedback.

We just launched today and are getting artists to join up. Once we get enough artworks, we will use our mailing list (which people opted-into), of people interested in art, that we will get to come on to the site to rate artwork and hopefully start purchasing some of it :)

And, yes, it is based on a tinder-like concept. We're trying to keep the ratings as simple as possible. We'll keep refining the recommendation engine. For example, prioritizing artists the users favor.

is there a score card of my own images that people liked or didn't like? it only has a pile of things i passed or liked, which, well, i don't care about. i mostly want the stats.

I have been having some fun there. Mike, you need to use the gravatar. That is a shame as I really do not want to add another email to gravatar

However, if you link your Facebook, on the account page, it changes to that avatar

Mike Savad

when i click on instagram in accounting i get this error:

{"code": 403, "error_type": "OAuthForbiddenException", "error_message": "You are not a sandbox user of this client"}

some of that may be invisible, not sure if the system here will remove brackets.

after i linked with google, it took me back to accounting, minus the other connections, back space took me back to the front page.
same with facebook, though now i have the avatar by connecting to that.

its weird that both of those apps can see my email, but twitter cannot? and why would it follow other people if i ok the twitter app?
the twitter app seems to be far more aggressive then the other two

Read Tweets from your timeline.
See who you follow, and follow new people.
Update your profile.
Post Tweets for you.

i don't want it posting anything to my stream, or follow new people, or update anything. i thought these would be links so others can follow my other channels. not for you to advertise in my streams.

be sure its an FAA site, and not your artist site. it doesn't seem to know the difference.

what i imagine is a page full of artists, say 6 at a time, and they can then pick through those. having to go through one artist a click at a time gets old fast. the painters only have like 20 things, i have over 3000. and while i would imagine it would be a great treat to go through them all. it would probably lose its interest fast.

though i am curious - what are you getting out of this?

Jeff,

You are offering a legitimate and interesting service, although it may not grow to the size that matters statistically. Beyond artists joining.

The problem I see is no matter how above board you are, and you are, your privacy terms are all about offering other services later.

FAA already has spammers below board, so to speak, constantly offering us deals. You are putting a much better face on that longer term...JUST MY OPINION.

Drag images to left and drop is nope, drag to the right and drop is a like. When I click on Artists I go only to my submit page, home only allows me to see one artist?

Mike Savad

how will people find this service? there is no content in it. google won't bother indexing it. what are your plans with the email address i provided, along with facebook and such? because i didn't see a link that linked back to me in any way, nor a contact.

how with a viewer know what this site is about? and what will you do when someone says NO to everything? because that is human nature.

if i'm logged in, i only see one image. if i'm logged out, i see a bunch? and why is that i see a bunch from the same artist? how do i get any kind of coverage here?

when i click on the picture i should see the site its on. not just a small (i) at the bottom. the all rights reserved at the bottom should also indicate, that all copyrights belong to different artists. in fact each image should say - copyright - artist name.

looking at this new front page, it stops after a while, i don't see how my work would ever be shown.

if a viewer has to login, in order to swipe an image, well, there is no point to that. if the buyer isn't getting something out of this in the end, what is the point of it all?

when i'm not logged in, and i click on artists-- i get a create an account or login page... what is the point of that?? i'm there to advertise my things. no one will see it at this rate.

why does the privacy section mention credit card use? what is an operators.s ?

what is:

Members-Only Web Sites

Information you provide on Operators.s membership applications is used to create a member profile, and some information may be shared with other of the Operators.s individual member representatives and organizations. i don't recall seeing this part when i signed on. i feel this privacy thing came from another website. i just looked up a section and word for word:

http://new.cardsmartchoice.com/Privacy;jsessionid=7E9504EE19629DDCBFCB997B9097787B it came from here?

based on that alone, i now wonder what this site is really about.

A lot of good suggestions about presenting artists. Look for some of them in the near future.

The terms are to allow us to show ads on the site and the ability to send an occasional email if we see the need. It was from a boiler plate and we will refine over time as we see where this adventure takes us. On a previous site, we only send one or two emails a year. We hate spam too.

As for promoting, we show recent artwork when not logged in to help search engines find us. We can also show different information to search engines. Also, the Google analytics let them, and others, see traffic to our site which affects search engine results.

As far as what we get out of it. Promoting artwork, working with new technologies (ex. Graph databases, mongo, ...), and hopefully enough ad revenue to pay for the hosting and an occasional pizza. And, finally, a new adventure.

Mike Savad

from my point of view as the artist, i don't see how i will ever be seen. logged in, i only see 1 image and i have to say yay or nay, and not just move on. i don't have a feeling for all of them. and i don't see a list of artists, i only go into a set up page.

from the view of a visitor, i don't see the point of the site at all. you have to sign in, in order to play. and in the end, there isn't really anything for anyone to do other than to review images, and that's really boring. there is no description of what people are looking at, that its for sale or anything like that. google will not find any of these if there is no human written content. if its just titles and names, google doesn't care about that. and it probably won't update if its always changing anyway.

so i'm still really confused as to the point of this website. the site itself seems kind of cobbled together, yet you took the privacy report from a credit page. that wasn't boiler plate, it had terms that didn't even fit into this site - like the credit part of it (which only makes sense when its a credit card). it seemed odd to me that the privacy was so thought out and complete, and the rest of the site looks like a work in progress. to me that alone is a red flag, since your not really saying what you will personally do with the information your collecting.

like what was the point of connecting through facebook and such? that doesn't help me at all. in fact now i can only log in using facebook and the other one, don't have any other choice to add a password there.

Jeff,

It all looks good on the surface........but I think the site serves you more than us.

Not sure it would serve any of us at all. Bit like joining a contest on FAA, the art gets buried from view.

I have voted in a few FAA contests. I get 40 images in and look at the number left to go...say 1500....and I shut off. I have voted for three images at that point if that is allowed. The rest of the images never ever get seen by me. Worse yet I never go back to the contests. I am not interested in gaming a system. I want a direct approach that says this is my work, this is how I make a living selling my work, If you like my work consider buying my work, I have posted this ad in a place that is appropriate to finding a sale. Further I do not expect any spam. Regardless of your saying you dont like to receive spam, we have no idea if you will send us spam.

It's a bit clunky at this time, but I will continue to participate until I believe it provides no calculable value.

At this stage, the site feels beta, and with any luck, it will evolve into a viable channel for Jeff.
The time I can allocate to such an endeavor is quite limited, but for now, I will keep it in my rotation.

The images are now better randomized.

Here are some responses to the great feedback:

The site was designed for art lovers to rate artwork. When there are enough users, it should get pretty good at finding what they might like. That's why it forces the users to rate things one at a time (much like some dating applications). It will also show them a history of their likes and dislikes (from which they can change their rating). Hopefully, a piece sticks in their minds and they can easily click the blue "information" button and link to your FAA page to purchase it.

For the artist, it will show your artwork to people most likely to favor it, and hopefully purchase it. For pieces just added to the system, we randomly insert them in with the recommendations so they get to be rated.

To display like/dislike counts by artwork, or by artist, would not be fair because of how we randomly insert images and recommend based on our algorithm. Even if a piece has a lot of dislikes, it could be recommended to people with completely different tastes than the people who rated it. The system uses a modified version of a Jaccard Similarity Index (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaccard_index for the nitty gritty details) to rate and recommend artwork.

It's very little effort for the artist. The site will automatically check your FAA page and add artwork as it's added to FAA (this could take a couple days or more). If you no longer wish to participate, go to the "Artists" page, unclick "agree", click update, and we'll remove your artwork (if is has ratings this could take up to 30 days).

Finally, yes it's very much in a "beta" phase and can benefit from many improvements. At this point, we're making sure it's as viable as we think it is.

Mike Savad

abbie i'm only asking questions here. its still good input.

i'm thinking that if i love art, i will end up on the place that has the art and cut out the middle man. because its not going to our artist site, there is nothing binding them to my store.

for now to be worth it for me, i want to be listed in the artists section, right now its just a sign up sheet.
