Sasser Georgia Water Tower by Kathy K. McClellan is a photographic image created for Day 274 of the 365 Challenge (Journal 2022). This is a vertical format image.
Sasser, Georgia (USA) is a small town in Terrell County. Although it is considered to be part of the Albany, Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area, the town's population is only about 400 citizens.
The Sasser post office was established in 1881 and the town was incorporated in 1890.
Sasser was founded by G.W. Varner but named after William Sasser.

Mark's Melon Patch by Kathy K. McClellan is a photographic image created for Day 275 of the 365 Challenge (Journal 2022).
I found this cute sign a few miles outside of the town of Sasser, Georgia (USA). There were several acres of fascinating sights including a road side farm market, selling locally grown fruits and vegetables and farm products such as jams, jellies, BBQ sauces, homemade ice cream and more.
During the fall, pumpkins and gourds are everywhere. A corn maze, hay rides, face painting, and farm animals are a few of the many activities that make up their Fall Festival in October.
Delicious local produce and farm products, seasonal landscaping and family fun have been provided by Mark's Melon Patch for the past 30 years.

Roadside Attraction - Glennville CA
I'll never forget going into Glennville. It was a GPS malfunction that took us on the least scenic route to Sequoia National Park. I found out just how out of human touch this method is!
"In 1860, a state-funded wagon road from Glennville to Kernville was laid out by Thomas Baker, a civil engineer and founder of Bakersfield. A tribute to his ingenuity is that today's State Route 155 still follows Baker's route, originally known as the McFarlane Road, almost entirely." ~ Wikipedia
This road is the biggest patience testing road for miles on end. While I am exaggerating a bit, (due to the sheer frustration of this misdirection) I'll never forget just how far out of our way it took us. In the middle of the "rainbow" was this crossroads with a great little market restaurant where we (and our traveling ensemble) had what turned out to be a tremendous lunch before ambling down the highway through the nothingness once again.
This corner attraction caught my eye. Of course, the name of the town... Glennville (Population 280)... was not lost on me either. I had to retrieve something from this gold nugget experience. I'll never forget the memories either.

"When Cardinals Appear - Four" by Patti Deters. Four male Northern cardinals (Cardinalis cardinalis) are seen perching on the branch of a birch tree, clustered together as if in a meeting or at a party. These bright red songbirds are popular with beginning birders as they are easy to spot and easy to identify. This little flock was seen near a winter birdfeeder in Minnesota, where they are generally the first birds to arrive every morning.
The popular saying "when cardinals appear, angels are near" is credited to an untitled poem by American poet, Victoria McGovern (a verse is shown below). In history, the first reference to cardinals and the afterlife has been found in Native American cultures. Today, many people like to believe that when they see a cardinal, it means a loved one from heaven is sending them a cheerful hello. Another version of this sentiment is "When Cardinals appear, loved ones are near", as is depicted in this artwork.
UNTITLED
May you come to find comfort in and remember,
Cardinals appear when angels are near.
So go now, sit outside and drink your tea.
Keep a look out for the little red bird,
It is there your loved ones will be.

Four sequential image captures were digitally stitched for this panoramic view of the new beach work done at Fort Smallwood Park to help curb erosion. Rip-rap was added, new beaches shaped, some old weeds removed and new shore grass/plants planted. Some new fishing "decks" were also installed in a different area of the park to facilitate fishing without having to deal with rip-rap.
When viewing this image full screen, you may notice a gathering entertainment event was happening at an adjacent property (top right) beyond the park on this particular day. I could also hear a band as entertainment.

I used textures to create an atmospheric composition of a dangerous, foggy pedestrian bridge crossing. The forest background is a texture as well as the fog. The bridge was a separate PNG element added as a main component to the scene.
The intent was to create a situation that presented an element of danger that challenges your mind to make a choice. Is the risk worth taking as opposed to playing it safe!
We are often presented with this type of scenario in our dreams and struggle to resolve the dilemma before a similar situation presents itself in real life. Some believe this is our minds way of helping prepare us for the tough situations we may face in life.

McCormick Farmall Cub Tractor by Kathy K. McClellan is a photographic image created for Day 277 of the 365 Challenge (Journal 2022).
I photographed this tractor at Mark's Melon Patch a few miles outside Sasser, Georgia (USA). This particular piece of farm equipment was built by the International Harvester Company at their plant in Louisville, Kentucky (USA).
Nameplate panels on the hood sides and grille painted white indicate that this tractor was a 1957 model, one of 6,158 manufactured that year.
The Farmall Cub tractors were designed for small acreage farmers to replace their horse or mule for cultivating row crops. They were the smallest tractors made by the company and a total of 245,000 Cubs were built between 1947 and 1981 in Louisville.
Many of these small tractors remain in use on small farms today because of their versatility.

The Royal Spoonbill is a majestic wading bird of considerable size (up to 80cm)! The bird is white and has a large spatulated bill. It's white plumage illuminates the mangrove forest on this overcast day.
While wading, the bird swishes its bill from side to side in search of food. It feeds on fish, shrimps, crustaceans and aquatic insects. The bill is black, as are the legs, feet and facial skin. It has a yellow spot over its eye. In breeding season the Royal Spoonbills develop a crest of long plumes which can be erected during mating displays. It wades in shallow water such as these mangroves here. Taken in south-east Queensland, Australia.

"Ghost Crab of Mexico" by Patti Deters. The Ghost Crab (Ocypode occidentalis) is a semiterrestrial crab identified by uniform coloring (can be gray white to peach pink) and by the unequal size of their claws (chelae), as well as by their long heavy eye stalks. They live close to the ocean surf with the largest species found just above the high tide line. They are nocturnal crustaceans appearing right around sunset. They are omnivorous scavengers eating anything found in the surf drift line such as dead fish or even other crustaceans. These little creatures are quite speedy and are not afraid to run into crashing waves when threatened. They have very strong pinchers that can inflict major instant pain. They reach a maximum size of about 6 inches. The Ghost Crab is found along the Pacific side of the Baja, in the upper portions of the Sea of Cortez, and along the coast of the Mexican mainland through to Guatemala. Melon Patch John Deere by Kathy K. McClellan is a photographic image created for Day 279 of the 365 Challenge (Journal 2022).
This old John Deere tractor was parked near the entrance to Mark's Melon Patch, a few miles out of Sasser, Georgia (USA).
John Deere, a blacksmith by trade, invented a steel plow in 1837 that allowed less frequent cleanings than the old iron or wood plows to which thick soil would stick. He manufactured his plows before putting them up for sale so farmers would not have to wait for one to be built.
Agricultural implements were the mainstay of the company but they also made a few bicycles in the 1890s.
After briefly experimenting with building their own tractors they purchased the Waterloo Gasoline Engine Company in 1918, which manufactured the popular Waterloo Boy tractor at its facilities in Waterloo, Iowa. In 1923 they started manufacturing tractors under the John Deere name starting with the Model D. They continue to build most of their tractors in Waterloo, Iowa (USA).
The tractor shown in this photograph appears to be a John Deere A model from 1950. The A model was built from 1947-1952 as a 2 wheel drive row tractor in their Waterloo, Iowa (USA) facility.

Dreamy forest in autumn.
Summer has passed and autumn has arrived with its beautiful warm colors. Golden tones can already be seen on the leaves but the grass is still green. Soon everything will be yellow, orange and red. Walking in nature that October day, I came across this small forest. When I went a little deeper, I was mesmerized by this sight. The trees around me swayed gently in the breeze as if they were doing some forest dance. In the distance, a bluish haze in the depths of the forest mingled with the yellow colors of the sunlight above. Everything looked so beautiful, dreamy and peaceful. The silence was disturbed only by the rustling of leaves in the wind. For me, every entering into the forest is special and exciting and always evokes special emotions.

The Model D Tractor by Kathy K. McClellan is a photographic image created for Day 280 of the 365 Challenge (Journal 2022).
The tractor shown in this photograph was parked and decorated with pumpkins at Mark's Melon Patch a few miles from Sasser, Georgia (USA).
The John Deere Model D tractor was built between 1923 and 1953. It had the longest production run for any single model made by John Deere.
The D was able to operate with gasoline, kerosene or distillate. All D Models were manufactured at the Waterloo, Iowa (USA) facility. Over 55,000 were built.
Before 1925-26 this tractor had steel wheels. By 1925 it was realized that rubber tires would better serve industrial farming.

Scrollwork Perspectives by Kathy K. McClellan is a photographic image created for Day 284 of the 365 Challenge (Journal 2022).
The railing on the corner of the balcony at a Boutique Hotel in Nashville, Georgia (USA) provides a unique perspective of the metal scrollwork.
The balcony overlooks the town square and a state highway. The highway runs between this railing and the brick building across the street shown in the background.
One length of the metal railing is straight ahead. At the end of that side of the balcony the railing turns 90 degrees and then runs across the front of the balcony.
Although it appears that there are two different designs on the railing, both lengths of the railing are completely alike.

Brick Beyond The Scrollwork by Kathy K. McClellan is a photographic image created for Day 285 of the 365 Challenge (Journal 2022).
The railing on the balcony of a Boutique Hotel in Nashville, Georgia (USA) may be in the foreground in this image but the focus is on the brick building in the image's background.
Not only is the metal railing with scrollwork blurred but the distance between that railing and the brick building is deceptive. There is actually a state highway between the brick building and the hotel.
Both buildings were built in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. As you can see the window on the brick building has been broken and the opening covered with plywood. The wood, as well as the original brickwork, has been painted a neutral tan color.
Note the arched brickwork above the window opening and the layered, stepped up brickwork close to the roof line. These architectural features give a clue to the original era of the building.
When I look at this photograph I wonder how often I may miss what's going on around me at the present (the beauty of the metal scrollwork on the railing) because I am focusing on the past (the old brick building with a broken window).

"Round Island Lighthouse, Michigan" by Patti Deters. Also called "Old Round Island Point Lighthouse", is located on the west shore of Round Island in the shipping lanes of the Straits of Mackinac, which connect Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. Because of its red and white color scheme and square architecture, it looks like an old-time schoolhouse. Though remote, tourist ferries pass by traveling on their way to and from Mackinac Island, which is how I captured this image on tis cloudy and cool day. The restored building is a familiar icon of the upper Great Lakes and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places; it is also a twin of the Two Harbors Light in Minnesota. I used a forest texture with light beams as the base background. I added additional light textures, a boulder, and six silhouetted fairies. I blended it all together with by adding a glow and a bit of blur to the fairies. Some fairies are in the air and some are on the ground. It's all a mystical scene that may conjure up memories from childhood fables read to you by your parents to put you to sleep at night.

Vintage Hanging Light Fixture by Kathy K. McClellan is a photographic image created for Day 287 of the 365 Challenge (Journal 2022).
The design elements in this small town boutique hotel gave homage to it's heritage as the center of a rural, agricultural locale.
Lots of brick, wood and old style fixtures gave the room a nostalgic feel.
The building itself was built in the early twentieth century and although modern conveniences were added when the hotel was designed, these vintage features remind you of the structure's origins.
This particular room contained light fixtures that included bare bulbs with metal protectors, exposed wood beams, interior wood shutters and exposed brick. Facing this window with the modern bedding and bath to my back, I could imagine that it was the early 1900s.

I took the shape of my own self-portrait, and filled it with an Autumn colored tree from Downs Park in Pasadena, Maryland (2021). I put that against a cloudy blue sky I captured previously. I then wrote a poem having symbolism and related words between the meaning of the poem and the image seen as, "The Autumn Of My Life" and embedded the poem in the digitally composed image. (10-15-22).
The poem in the image may not be easily read unless viewed full screen, or full size so, I will also include the text of the poem in this description.
In The Autumn Of My Life
By Brian Wallace
==================
Now, in the Autumn of my life,
There's not much to compare,
How heavy feel my limbs,
The chill that's in the air,
My roots, they still support me,
Though weaker every year,
Each season I move forward,
Brings me closer to despair,
How far have my branches reached,
Have they covered those in need,
If I've shaded any from the breach,
Or shared a nurturing seed,
My colors will be fading soon,
Leaves falling out of sight,
But there is one thing certain,
They once were full and bright,
And life so ever changing,
With it's challenges and strife,
Is still a gift I wouldn't change,
And I hope I lived it right.

Boom Ballet by Kathy K. McClellan is a photographic image created for Day 289 of the 365 Challenge (Journal 2022).
An enormous amount of equipment, including multiple cranes, was involved in rebuilding the bridge over the Bay of Saint Louis in Mississippi (USA) after Hurricane Katrina. Crawling cranes were shipped in and out by barge.
On the evening before this barge was towed out of the bay, the crane operators set their lattice booms in the positions you see in this image.
Giving the photograph the effect of a film negative accents the lattice booms and cables and their artistic connections as seen from across the bay.

I added a semi-silhouette of a female ballet dancer to a photo of a "Supermoon" I captured 11-15-2016. I also added a Photoshop brush of a comet, hoping it would further accentuate the main subject. I added white wings to the dancer for further enhancement.
A supermoon is a full moon or a new moon that nearly coincides with perigee—the closest that the Moon comes to the Earth in its elliptic orbit—resulting in a slightly larger-than-usual apparent size of the lunar disk as viewed from Earth. The technical name is a perigee syzygy (of the Earth–Moon–Sun system) or a full (or new) Moon around perigee. Because the term supermoon is astrological in origin, it has no precise astronomical definition.

Pulley At The Apex by Kathy K. McClellan is a photographic image created for Day 290 of the 365 Challenge (Journal 2022).
This image shows the top of a lattice-boom on a crane. There are pulleys at the very top of the boom as well as one several feet down from the top. There is also a hook under a round, metal weight.
The pulleys and hook are attached to cables. All of this equipment makes it possible for the crane to lift and position heavy objects at a construction site.
This particular crane was being used when the bridge over the Bay of Saint Louis along the Mississippi Gulf Coast (USA) was being replaced. The original draw bridge had been destroyed by Hurricane Katrina a year before this photograph was taken and a taller bridge was being designed and built, eliminating the need for a draw opening.

A flock of sheep is grazing in the forest
I took this photo one day while I was walking in nature and passing through one small forest at the edge of the field.
When I entered the forest and went a little deeper I came across this scene.
A flock of sheep was grazing under one big tree while the late sun rays were breaking through the trees illuminating that. The sheeps were grazing peacefully, paying no attention to me although I was very close to them. It's early autumn and nature is still green but soon, leaves will become yellow and fall down on the ground. The grass will wither and there will be much less food for them. But until then this little group enjoys in nice weather and doesn't boor with the future.

Boom Hook by Kathy K. McClellan is a photographic image created for Day 291 of the 365 Challenge (Journal 2022). This is a vertical format image.

An assortment of construction equipment was needed and the crane to which this hook belonged was one of several cranes shipped in by barge.
A series of pulleys, cables and hooks on many cranes enabled the workman to lift heavy beams and other equipment into place while constructing the new elevated bridge.
Living down the street from the bridge at the time, afforded me the opportunity to take many photographs of the bridge before, during and after it's replacement.

I added a figure symbolizing death (Angel Of Death or Grim Reaper), and a purple smokey interior of the crystal ball.
I faded the vision of the Grim Reaper in the ball and darkened some of the edges.
I added a tarot card of death propped sideways against the crystal ball stand with the word, "DEATH" towards the foreground with the candle light accentuating the word "DEATH".
I added and manipulated shadows and light.
I added a vignette and some subtle glow effect.

Photograph of a local deer grazing at night on a hill, in the dark. There is a family of 8 deer in the neighborhood and I have never seen any out after dark. It was mid-October, nearly 7 PM and the sun had set. I was out walking, it was dark, there were no lights and I could barely even see this deer on the hillside 20 feet away. I saw the dark scene, and took the picture with my cell phone. With the flash. Then I told the young deer to go home. I told the deer it was too dark outside to graze for food. Go home. Plus I reminded the deer that the coyotes would soon be out looking for animals to eat. The young deer looked at me, ignored my advice, and went back to grazing. In the dark. I left and went home. Hopefully, so did the deer.

Another Halloween themed digital composition...
I used a fog texture with a greenish tint as the base background. I added a pair of hands reaching out toward the viewer. I made the fingernails black and added a white light reflection to each one. I also added a greenish tint to the hands and faded the palms into the background. I added a hooded figure to the background which enhanced the effect of the hands coming from the entity. I then added two glowing orange eyes within the hooded entity. I tied it all together with a glow effect over the entire image and then masked out the glow over the fingernails, thumbs, and eyes for sharper detail on those points. Finally, I added a subtle vignette which further draws attention to the main subject. This is another composition done in the spirit of upcoming Halloween this month. (10-19-22).

Holly Road Over Cypress Creek by Kathy K. McClellan is a photographic image created for Day 301 of the 365 Challenge (Journal 2022).
Holly Road, passing over Cypress Creek, is located in the state of Tennessee (USA) and connects Big Cypress Road (Route 1763) and the Natchez Trace Parkway.
It is a gravel, one-lane road and there is a warning sign as you turn off the Parkway that the bridge is one-lane.
Cement railings on either side of the bridge keep vehicles from falling into the creek if the driver strays too far to the side and metal guardrails protect one from falling off the sides' ends of the bridge onto concrete and rock erosion control at the foot of the bridge.
The road is shaded by a canopy of hardwood trees along most of it's short distance. A slight curve and then an incline can be seen on the far end of the road where it meets Route 1763 (Big Cypress Road).

Pre sunset zoom photograph of a large gathering of multiple species of birds at a far distance downriver from where I was. It was too far away for me to walk there in time as the sun would have set and it would have been dark before I arrived and the birds would have flown away. Thus, I could not attend the avian festival. Luckily, my zoom lens was able to capture it photographically, in the name of art.

Two photo captures were digitally stitched to produce this panoramic view of the "Duck Pond" at Kinder Farm Park in Millersville Maryland during the peak colors Fall season 10-27-22.
The fountain is spraying water while the geese have just entered the pond. Sunlight is illuminating the orange leaves in the foreground. The ground is also covered with the fallen leaves of Autumn. The light and shadow add contrast to the serene composition.

Mute swan with a morning glow along the back of its nest. Most of the swan population in North Carolina can be seen along the coastal area but there are a few areas in the middle of the state that have reporting either mute or tundra swans as of late. I made a recent trip to Lake Benson located in Garner, North Carolina that had several reports of these swans. when we arrived a group of swans arrived and posed right in front of me.

Yellow Understory by Kathy K. McClellan is a photographic image created for Day 302 of the 365 Challenge (Journal 2022).
This photograph was taken along the Natchez Trace Parkway in Tennessee (USA). The location was one of two picnic areas between the Alabama - Tennessee state line and Collinwood, Tennessee.
Yellow was the dominate fall color along that section of the Trace when I visited and especially on the trees that made up the understory of the forest.

Four horizontally formatted captures were vertically stitched to produce this beautiful vertically formatted pano of the Duck Pond at Kinder Farm Park in Millersville, Maryland. The pond fountain added a nice contrasting element to the composition. I replaced the top portion of a blank sky with one having clouds.

Small farm in the river valley
This photo was taken one October late afternoon while I was walking along the bank of one small river in Serbia. Autumn has already come and the golden yellow leaves can be seen on the trees but the grass is still green and fresh. There are even yellow flowers on the ground because of the warm and nice weather. There is one small farm next to the riverbank but only a part of it can be seen from this angle. Also, this small river itself can't be seen due to the bushes but despite all of that it was a nice autumn scene to photograph. In the distance, we can see the forested hills illuminated by the sun.

Tennessee Autumn Afternoon Light by Kathy K. McClellan is a photographic image created for Day 303 of the 365 Challenge (Journal 2022).
This photograph was taken on the Natchez Trace Parkway in Southern Tennessee (USA). It was a late October afternoon. Only a few clouds dotted the sky but there was a brisk wind signaling a rain storm that was predicted for the next day.
The image shown was my view as I looked up at the tree canopy above me. The leaves that were showing signs of autumn were mostly yellow or orange. Except for those intermittent clouds the sky was a clear blue. The autumn sun in the southern sky was shining brightly through the tree branches overhead.
Deciduous, hardwood trees are the most prevalent plants along the Parkway which makes the drive or bicycle ride along the highway a treat for the eyes during the autumn season.

Cypress Creek Reflects Autumn by Kathy K McClellan is a photographic image created for Day 304 of the 365 Challenge (Journal 2022)
The photograph shown was taken along the Natchez Trace Parkway in the state of Tennessee (USA). Two separate picnic areas are located adjacent to Cypress Creek between the Tennessee and Alabama state line and Collinwood, Tennessee. The Cypress Creek Picnic area is where this scene was captured.
The slow flowing Cypress Creek is littered with fallen leaves. The surface of the water was still enough to reflect the surrounding trees as their leaves changed from summer green to a vibrant autumn. It can be a little hard to distinguish which leaves are a reflection of leaves still on the trees, which leaves are floating on the surface of the water and which leaves are visible through the water but actually covering the floor of the shallow creek.
There are several areas where the surface of the water has been disturbed leaving small circles of rings among the reflections. There are also two gray stones at the water's edge confirming that you are looking down at a creek rather than looking up to the sky.

A view from the High Bridge hiking trail of the Cuyahoga River in NE Ohio's Metroparks. Just downstream from the Ohio Edison Dam.
This stretch of the river has one of the steepest drops, with it going down 200 feet in less than 2 miles. Currently there is a project underway to remove the dam (no longer used to generate power) to improve water quality and restore more than two miles of Class III and Class V rapids.

Here comes the autumn on the small lake
This beautiful autumn photograph was taken one October day while I was walking around the banks of one small lake in Serbia. That lake is not so big but it is very nice surrounded by trees and vegetation from all sides. In some parts, the branches literally lean over the water making the lake more beautiful. This is one such scene where one big tree can be seen completely towering over the water of the lake with its branches. There are golden, yellow, and red leaves on the branches but a little greenery can be seen as well in the background. Withered copper-colored leaves fell into the water, making it shimmer in the sunset. Autumn is, without doubt, one of the most beautiful seasons, especially on the lakes or rivers with trees close to it at sunset.

A photo capture of Kinder Farm Park from the far end of the pasture.
An overgrown blossoming weed topping the wooden 4-rail fence caught my eye. I did the color version first and thought it might look nice as a black and white as well.
The farm house, and other structures can be seen in the distance including four silos in shallow depth of field.
I made the foreground weed against the wooden fence the main subject. It was Autumn, 10-27-22.
