Favorite Art Quotes That Inspire. Got Any? Please Share!

I tend to collect quotes that I find inspiring, especially when applied to or conducive to Art in general.

I'd like to extend an invitation to all of you to submit your favorite Art related quotes or quotes you feel are applicable to Art. Please give credit to person being quoted if possible or if not possible label as "unknown". I know I sometimes remember the quote but forget who I am quoting and have to "google" it to find the author.

One of my favorite quotes that I have posted in my Art studio is by metal sculptor David Smith who said:

"I will not change an error if it feels right, for the error is more human than perfection."

Speaking for myself, this saying speaks to the angst the artist may feel when finding his or her technique, style, passion in exploring what to express through the art as well as choice of subject and style. There is room for everything~ someone once said: "Art Speaks through You."

And as imagination bodies forth
The forms of things unknown: the poet's pen
Turns them to shapes and gives to airy nothing
A local habitation and a name.
- William Shakespeare [A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM]

From the root, the sap rises up into the artist, flows through him, flows to his eye.
Overwhelmed and activated by the force of the current, he conveys his vision into his work.
And yet, standing at his appointed place as the trunk of the tree, he does nothing other than gather
and pass on what rises from the depths. He neither serves nor commands he transmits.
His position is humble. And the beauty at the crown is not his own; it has merely passed through him.

- Paul Klee

Despite all the troubles of our world, in my heart I have never given up on the love in which I was
brought up or on man's hope in love. In life, just as on the artist's palette, there is
but one single colour that gives meaning to life and art – the colour of love.

- Marc Chagall

Thanks very much for clearing it up for me.
