Besides the happy cheerful colors, what attracted my eyes was the scale of those trees, comparing with a normal size rural house. I this image as an Impressionism style painting because it was calling for that treatment.

We lived across the road from this tree for twelve autumns when I finally did this plein air painting to capture it's annual beauty, thinking I would probably never see it again.

But I am very happy to announce that my wife and i plan to move back to Maine early next year, so my painting output will switch to New England scenes again.

I took the photo in a late autumn morning, when the grass partially covered with dry leaves was also covered by frost, same with the wooden roofs of the buildings. The majestic trees where already bare, silhouetting against the golden light on the misty lake.

In Quebec Canada

An abstract in vivid fiery shades of autumn layered and blended in a loose crosshatching of brushstrokes that weave it together into a three dimensional sort of landscape that resembles canyons and forests on fire with the colors of fall and a bright sunny sky over all.

The Agawa Canyon in Ontario, just east of Lake Superior. There's no road that leads in here, so you either take the tour train (a popular Autumn attraction), or a very lengthy hike. I had heard about this for the past several years, mostly from ads that popped up in my Facebook news feed, but finally got around to doing it in October 2019, not too long before the world fell apart.

This watercolor painting captures grapevine rows on a vineyard & the rolling hills landscape of California. Fall colors are accented by a crisp blue sky with white clouds.

Winemakers take great care to harvest the grapes at their perfect stage of sweetness.

In summer the fruit ripens from small, green, hard berries into juicy grapes with hues of translucent gold for white wines & purple-ruby tones for red varieties.

In autumn the green leaves turn beautiful colors of yellow, orange & red before they fall & the vine is barren for winter.

A beautiful maple tree in bright red foliage. Named for Colonel John O'Fallon, a capitalist of St. Louis, and a director in the North Missouri Railroad. The village was surveyed in 1857. A post office was established in 1867 and is still operation

This is an Autumn view of a field I painted in acrylics. In this one I used a lot of zinc white in the clouds to allow glazes of translucent colors throughout. I am currently working on a oil painting of the scene, but in that one I am not going to use the zinc white as it reacts poorly with oil paint and can become brittle and de-laminate, which is not a condition with acrylic zinc white.

I painted this one in water mixable oils. They work okay, but I find the brushes don't clean as well and I have to use water mixable medium over a small percentage of water to paint with anyway, so I switched to regular oils. Fortunately, but not everyone knows this, you can use water mixable oils with regular oil painting mediums, they just lose the water mixable and water clean up features (which as I said, they don't do all that well anyway). This one has some fall foliage. I don't often paint fall foliage.

Here is a watercolor done in fall colors. I did several paintings from the reference photo I took of the scene, this one I decided to make fall colors, although taken in late October, the trees hadn't actually changed yet..

Holly leaves and blue berries in the rain



Red and green Oregon Holly leaves and blue berries in the rain. I saw this decorative plant growing in front of a wall in Washington state, in a rainy October day and I liked bright red color of the leaves with water drops on them and small blue berries around. I took my photograph with the iPhone and made it as a watercolor image in digital media.

Lehigh Parkway in Allentown, Pennsylvania. I took a half day off of work on Friday to beat the crowds. Was nice to have so much quiet time there. The ducks seem to enjoy it as well.

A branch overhanging the lake in Volkspark Wilmersdorf, Berlin. Tried a lot of long exposures to flatten the water, but there was just enough breeze to move all the leaves too, so this one with ripples intact and still leaves worked out the best:

This is probably my favorite fall image of my collection. It was taken several years ago near Warm Springs, Virginia. We recently revisited the area/location and it looks completely different! All of the fence is gone and some of the trees. I believe the property is now owned by a business and they are fixing up the property so maybe new fence will be up in the future but probably not configured as I found it before. Glad I got this shot before some of the interesting elements disappeared.

Lachine Canal Fall Reflections

The Lachine Canal is a 14.5 km waterway that links the Old Port of Montreal with Lac St. Louis. This landmark is operated by Parks Canada. Locals and visitors alike can walk or bike along its tree-lined pathway to enjoy the view of the canal, the lake, and the boroughs that it passes through. You can also tour the Fur Trade National Historic Site, a stone museum that explains the history of the fur trade that was launched at this location. This photo was taken in the autumn, with the colorful leaves of the trees lining the canal reflecting in the water.
