A. The hope was that the color would have a calming effect on the male prisoners. In color theory, pink is said to reduce aggression.

In 1957, the Nash Ambassador received a major facelift with two- and three-tone paint schemes and styling by famous Italian design house Pininfarina, who had only collaborated on a few cars with Ferrari in the past. In addition, it had the first 4 beam headlight system used on a U.S. car. There was also new front-end styling, and factory air was included.
Unfortunately, Nash came to an end in 1957, but it sure went out with a bang!

Little Pink House Montreal
Montrealers woke up one morning to find that a cabin atop an abandoned factory had been painted pink! Green curtains were added, and now a smaller cabin atop the old building has been painted red as well. How the artist got up there to paint the little house pink or what their motive was remains a mystery! It does add a rather colorful touch to the bleak looking former beer malting facility. Graffiti covers the building, including the word "house" . It has become a landmark and topic of conversation in Montreal. This photo was taken along the Lachine Canal in Montreal, Quebec, Canada in the fall.

Jessica, when I was a child, there used to be candy boxes with covers having images similar to yours... You make me go and try this vintage type of look ;)

A. Why did some prisons paint their walls pink?
Cells, not entire prisons. It was thought to calm inmates.
I'd place a 5$ bet that I'm the only person in the discussion who's actually seen a pink cell, thankfully as a visiting HR rep from State government and not as an inmate. Someone had a crazy theory that pink cells calmed inmates and decreased the chance of violence. It didn't work, but the jail I was in on that day still had a pink cell. It was due to be painted soon but the CO's giving me a tour showed me that and the lethal injection table.
