As I mentioned in my marketing post, What Is Marketing Really there are several things you need to look at when being a seller. Whether you sell online or offline. It does not matter what you are selling as the principles are the same.
Product: What are you selling? The actual product that changes hands for money. On this site it is prints, products such as mobile phone cases, duvets covers, original art.
Price: How much do you charge? Is it a lot, a little... average?
Place: Where are you advertising your items? Obviously here, but where else?
Promotion: How are people going to find you? Have you tried different methods? Did they work or should you be looking at other ways?
One of the main things we see here is people saying they don't think it is worth being here as they are not selling. To be frank, this is a silly statement that shows a total lack of knowledge in selling. This is the place people end up at to get the product you have created and advertised. It is only with advertising they find your name, or your work in the first place. (think keywords and descriptions for example)
So you need to go through those P's
Product
Price
Place
Promotion
and fine tune them
Look at other people in your genre. If they are pricing higher than you, are they actually selling? Are they well known? Walmart perfume costs less than a Chanel. Which are you? If selling art then you may well be in the inbetween. Be honest with yourself but NEVER undercut yourself. Never go cheap because you think that will sell images. Often the opposite is true and I have sold more work of higher prices than low end items. Why? Because people do not trust cheap! They expect to pay for a high quality item to get a high quality item and, if you are setting low prices, you have told them you are low quality work so do not do this.
The places you advertise are exceptionally important. I am seeing a lot of people advertising their hearts out... to other artists. You need to find buyers.
Jeff here is a photographer who specialises in New England images. So if he advertises to people who live there then he will sell well. There is a lady here who does wonderful children's art, so she advertises to mothers, fathers, (especially) grandparents.
If you are advertising constantly to other artists only, how is that working out for you? I would hazard a guess that it is not working out as well as you hope. Spend more time on finding people who want YOUR kind of work.
and finally back to promotion..... the part of marketing we all have problems with. I am going to go into more details in another post about how to get the best out of Facebook and Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest, but they are not the only other ways you can promote your work.

I've had luck with purchasing AND USING my own FAA products like tote bags, masks, mugs. When people comment or ask where I got them, I let them know about my Pixels site. I've planned to carry around business cards to hand out, but haven't quite got to that yet. I will also give some of the products as gifts.

I walk around with my weekender tote as well. Also a few years ago, I bought an inexpensive little greeting card rack and have it on display at a Postal Annex near my house. I keep greeting cards in stock there and every quarter, the manager pays me my percentage of the sales. People buy the cards in person and of course my website is listed on the back.

What you said about advertising to other artists really resonates with me. I love my artist friends and colleagues and it is not my intention to advertise to them. I have a nice following on Instagram, and most people are artists.
Perhaps it's my tags, and the algorithm shows your artwork, and then before you know it, there's a lot of artists following you.
I would love to hear people's suggestions on targeting the people who purchase prints online.
I'm relatively new here. I'm just trying to figure things out; it will take some time to build it and promote it properly.
Pinterest is viable, but I think most of us probably don't do it the right way.
From my understanding, it's best to create your own pins and put the art and photography into room settings and posts. Making sure you have the correct keywords. It gets confusing, though, because Pinterest changes everything all the time. Just when you think you know what's going on, they've done something differently. I look forward to hearing what others think about this.

Abbie, what you said about locally. I photograph for some non-profits and give my cards out and my husbands gives them to his clients, where some sales have come from. Patti using the products like tote, phone case, weekender bag, does get comments, and have sold masks from wearing them myself. Be ready with your card with the website on it. Allison, that is great idea as well.
Abbie, I am looking forward to your info on how to get the most out of social media. I have been going over my images, descriptions, keywords from the last Marketing thread's suggestions. You are right about artists to other artists. Thank you!!!

I love Allison's idea of the greeting card rack! I have one of my images as my iPhone case! Everyone needs a case for their phone!

I sell greeting cards (have my own display stands and racks), magnets and souvenirs at a popular country gift shop with a my website on the back of the packaging. During the fall season, when people pick their own apples and pumpkins at that location, I do notice a spike in my website sales for fall related artwork. It definitely works to have physical products that people can see for themselves the quality of your work you offer.

I just purchased on of my own tote bags for my Daughter In Law who uses totes every day. She's a teacher and lots of people will see it! Got some great ideas here!

Agree with what Anthony says. I have work hanging in a local winery and definitely noticed increased web sales when I had business cards out at the winery along with my work. Unfortunately with all of the COVID restrictions it has been very slow since people aren't allowed to taste inside, but hopefully at some point people start spending more time inside seeing my work again.

This is great information Abbie and need to learn more in how to have my artwork be seen by others, not just artists. I am sure that many people would love my items of art if they would be able to see it. It comparison to small retail stores, these items are even better. I have started over in belief that is what my profile needed to reach more people. I, too am a newcomer and has been difficult to navigate big platform. I will continue to learn from the tips you type.

I used to teach Marketing 101. I would like to add to the 4 Ps. The most important P is PEOPLE. Not all art is for all buyers. If you start with WHO your art is for, it is easy to pick places to advertise, price, etc.

"How much do you charge? Is it a lot, a little... average?" I always grapple with this question. Anyway, I guess I am priced somewhere in the middle.
Thinking about photographers, there are many real pros here who can charge high prices. I'm sure people are willing to fork over money no matter the cost.

Thank you so very much Abbie, I agree everything we do to help ea. other also helps us individually as well. As a newbie I appreciate the tips. If I may add, there was 1 customer that bought a couple of my prints on here, last month, and I was curious to know how he liked them. I copied from Facebook messenger his response, this is what he said: Answering your question about the prints I received: My main objection is the size is too small with the print image itself within the border being 6x8”. The other criticism is that because the substrate is not pure white but a little creamy off white it shifts the overall color cast slightly in it’s direction which is most noticeable in the whites.
As for my recent likes are ‘delicate as paper flowers’ and especially the ‘dragon fly’.

Vivian, you mention the border round the print but that is really provided to make it easier to mount the image. It is always the same size no matter what size the print and is normally covered up during mounting and framing so would not be seen to detract from the image.

Thank you very much Gill; this was just a comment from my buyer since he is a friend, on a couple of prints, I actually decided to send a similar message(but shorter) to FAA customer service, since also he (the customer) mentioned the color of prints were a tad off (so only for the sake of a teeny bit of quality control (with much respects but, something which is important to all of us) this was just the reason I mentioned it, which perhaps was not fitting to this thread. Thank you again for your kind response, which was nice to have.
