Metadata/ Changing Out Images

There is so much to learn!

For some reason I was under the impression that metadata would be removed when you upload so I forgot to pay attention to that.
I know that they remove your metadata on IG posts etc.

The good news is FAA does not.

The dilemma: when I go to remove an image and then put up a new one, there are sometimes issues with the old image hanging around.
I have read that a lot of people are having this issue.

In this case if we are talking about information/words it might not make a difference.

Then again strange things happen when we make changes. So I want to make sure I know what I'm doing before I proceed with any.

Is there anyway to actually change that information from the website by adding the metadata?

Do I need to add to the images then upload it again?

I have been studying and reading a lot on the forum, there's a wealth of information here!
Thanks Abbie and all the helpful folks who share answers!

the only info the site looks at it the description, title and keywords. all the rest no. though it may get messed up with a weird color profile.

the image may get stuck in your cache or the site's cache. and it will be messed up if you use the same title for other pieces.

you can edit the image and replace it with a new one. if you change the title - you break the link.

otherwise i'm not sure if i understand the question.

OK perhaps you didn't understand the question. Thank you for trying to answer.

When I upload my original images I don't think my files have the proper information built in.

In Photoshop you have the option of adding information into the file. I think it is called metadate.

So if I want to go back and add that to the files, and then remove the other files and upload the corrected files to FAA I am concerned I will have some weird glitch is similar to the one when I change out the images.

As long as I don't change out any of the words like the title, are you saying it should work out fine?

Is this necessary do you think to have the info?

Do the majority of people who upload here do that?

Thanks!

IPTC

that's the stuff it keeps, not sure how much of it like shutter stuff etc.

generally people have issues with changing the file itself - like the crop, or there was noise etc, and the thumb doesn't update itself right away. but it should change fine. the title becomes the main link, which then breaks in google etc. though if you just uploaded it, i wouldn't worry about that either.

the only thing i send with the file is - title, artist name, description, keywords. those are the things the site recognizes.

Are you're saying that you always include your copyright and your description, keywords already in your Photoshop files before you upload them?

Would you recommend I go back and do that or just do that next time?

Thanks!

yeah. there is no need to do it now other than to save the data for the future.

and future uploads you can do all this at home so you aren't rushing to get it down. as you edit the image in photoshop you hit - ALT CLTRL SHIFT I - and that will take you to the meta info. then under description fill in the info. use comma's, photoshop turns them into semicolons, the site turns them back into commas. this way you can add stuff as you see it in there, it makes it more efficient.

i'll often update at least my description on old pieces if i find a description here, so in the future i will have it and not depend on a website having it. the files stores the info like a briefcase.

I do my uploading from home, my workflow is a little disorganized.

Perhaps there is a preference in Photoshop I can change so all files already have the basic info from when I create them.
You're always so helpful.

Thank you!

i have an old photoshop and i don't think i have that. if your camera is exif aware, and you program that, it can insert your name like mine does, so there is that info. otherwise for keywords, i made a file of the base keywords something has and i copy and paste that in as a starting point. i give a basic description as i make it. and before i send it, i copy the description and put it into word for spelling issues and its easier for me to see. and i do this when i'm not creating, i find its easier to write it if i'm not in creating graphics mode.

That works great if you're a photographer!

I'm a designer/artist, I scan!

Although I do like to take pictures. The camera settings though or something I've never really warmed up to.

Thanks

then you'll have to do it manually each time. you can also download XnView, its a graphic viewer. you can change info on that too - CTRL I and that will let you insert keywords, but its a two step thing, and the title, description etc.

Thank you Abbie!

I have the ability to do it in Photoshop.

Another one of those things that I've never been very good at remembering.

When I remember I highlight a bunch of the pictures and then click and it adds it for me.

I just have my name and my website.

In reference to how it works on FAA.. If you put in all the information ahead of time in the file on FAA,
does any of that information show up under "keywords" or are you actually entering them in there again?

I'm showing my ignorance about all things technical.
Thanks!

If I were you, I probably wouldn't go back and reupload everything, just fill it out going forward.

Yes, if you have your Iptc filled out, the keywords, description, and title automatically fill in for you on upload. It's wonderful!

I always fill my info out in PS but then I also file my copyright quarterly so no reason to do it twice.

Thanks Susan! I'm still kind of confused, but thank you for trying to help me!

Susan.. Good news I went back and I tried to do it the way you described.
I did everything in Photoshop and like magic the information populated on FAA..so cool! Thanks!

Sue, what are you confused about?

Sue Zipkin

I'm always confused...LOL I was confused until I went and looked at the info file.. Filled it in to see if it would work, upload it and saw that it did.
So now I'm no longer confused.. At least about this. I have plenty of other things to be confused about. Thanks again!

Something else you asked about....

At the bottom of the File Info box, it says "Template Folder."

At the beginning of each year, I create a template with all the personal info that stays the same on every image. Then you click on that template you saved and it automatically fills in that stuff for you.

It sounds like you are very organized! Thanks again for sharing your experience and knowledge!

I've just been doing this long enough that I have my workflow figured out. You'll get there.
