Iphone 12 New Photo Format

Did anybody see the Apple announcement today? They introduced the new Apple ProRAW picture format. From Apple insider: "Apple ProRAW is a new imaging format that combines Apple's computational photography features with the benefits of shooting in RAW."

I jut now watched it. Interesting and I will look into that new format to see the advantages. I am due for an upgrade and was thinking of moving from my old iPhone 6 to the 11. Might have to consider the 12 and put my Nikon in storage. LOL

On another note - that lackluster show (promoting Verizon 5G) must not have impressed investors. Apple stock dropped almost $5 following the presentation. I was hoping to see it go up.

I watched the event, some really cool new apple stuff and accessories. Sitting with an iPhone11 Pro Max in my hand at the moment, but the 12 pro max is appealing.

I was also curious about the Pro Raw and if it’s going to be an upload option here on FAA. I upload a lot from my iPad and iPhone so interesting times.

The iPhone 12 also comes with magnetic tech to support wireless charging, I’m sure the tech is in the phone so when you put a phone case on the wireless charging still works as it currently does on my 11 pro max.

How soon is the iPhone12 Case going to be available here on FAA for us to promote and sell? Maybe Abbie could ask Sean.

Oddly, the most compelling thing for me for the entire event is the homepod mini. No way I was going to pay the enormous asking price of the original homepod.

That being said, I've got the iphone 11 pro max, so i'm currently satisfied with not paying another $1000 for these upgrades. I've got a feeling the next real upgrade on my phone will be in 2 or 3 more years.

i find that only some times raw is a good thing. have a small camera with raw and it highlights the sheer amount of noise the camera makes. all i get are a bunch of dark blotchy photos. it either shows off what the sensor can do or how bad it can be.

I would likely NOT use raw from tiny phone sensors. Even the older phone technology produces some pretty outstanding JPeg files. The “computational photography” algorithm(s) will improve on that.

Yeah, that HomePod Mimi is also pretty cool.

What (I think) hurt the whole presentation was the very lengthy “advertising” for Verizon’s 5G. What about us non-Verizon customers?

I've used RAW from an iPhone 6s with an app called Camera+ but it hasn't been any sort of miracle.

I have to admit, however, that between the cost of a new super-phone, which is as much as a lower priced DSLR and the fact that I like to flatter myself with the idea that I add something in the editing process, a phone that does everything automagically makes me feel obsolete. All I'd be is a biological transport unit for a self governing phone camera.

For better or worse, I think I will keep doing the magic myself.

The technology is amazing, with interpretive computational features, but "guessing" what color a pixel should be when seen though a small lens will have some limitations.

I'm probably in the minority, but I still am bewildered by the fact that millions of people will shell out around $1000 for a phone every year or so. If we had said that even 10 years ago people would have laughed at us... it's a funny old world.

Bah humbug... I'll be sticking with my iPhone 6s until the battery finally dies, which I assume will be soon as there's probably another nightly Apple "update" now they have another reason to kill off old products..

i might upgrade to the 7 once my kids decide to give me it...

With phones, we really have entered in the realm of diminishing returns. By the time I had my first iPhone, I had about 85% of the functionality that I have now and, from what I've seen in the "Greatest Phone Ever, Anywhere" promos, a new one does the same stuff, but claims to do it better, whatever that means. I guess that's the problem, that they've done their job too well. I don't want a larger phone, because my pockets have not gotten larger, I don't need a better screen because my eyes have gotten worse. When Apple introduced the "Retina" screen, the hype was that it's better than your eyes, so where can you go beyond that?

As for the camera, I'd always prefer my DSLR, and my phone camera is mainly the one I use when I'm out and don't have the "big" one. I had good luck some time past when Apple offered cheap battery replacements on 6S's. I took it to the store, they broke it while replacing the battery and I got a new 6S for free, so this one isn't even old.

IPhone SE cases will be in on the 23rd of October...

Douglas Brown

That’s good to know, but I’m sure the iPhone 7&8 fit the SE. Having the SE option is good though as not a lot of people know about the 7 or 8.

Any news on the 12s.

"Apple ProRAW is a new imaging format that combines Apple's computational photography features with the benefits of shooting in RAW."

Anybody know what they mean by this? It sounds like some sort of Franken-Raw, where the software does some programmed edits and then saves to a raw format, but I always thought that raw was unedited photo data that allows a user to make their own edits without an intervening lossy compression process. I can't help but wonder if this means the the phone software "decides" how my image should look and makes edits before I even see it.

Hi everyone. I am GREEN and very new here. I am in the process of deciding what i need to capture my work appropriately for FAA. Prints is my main objectives. I get confused when they say 5000x4000 etc. The main question is, are the IPHONE cameras enough for what we need? They are 12MP only. I understand I need jpeg and that they are captured in sRGB which i guess is what the norm is for e-commerce. Does anyone have a view? Do i need to purchase a DSLR? Or will and iPhone work? I have the 10XR currently. Welcome your guidance!!!!
Thank you
Christina

Douglas Brown

Chrsitina, I use the iPhone 11 Pro Max to upload most of my images, they upload mostly 4000X3000px That in my opinion is sufficient. I use an app called Pro Camera which is optimised for the iPhone, I use this high quality app to edit my images, that turns my images in to .jpeg

I always upgrade my iPhone every two years, the iPhone 11 Pro Max is in my opinion is a fantastic piece of kit for doing photography, I’ve never had the 10XR, but the 11 pro max is a huge upgrade on that I’m sure.

Hope this helps.

I've had some fairly large prints sell that were shot on my iPhone 6S and, they didn't get returned, so I take that as meaning that they were in line with the customer's expectations. Those are roughly 3K by 4K. My impression is that with phone photos and that tiny little lens, you need to be concerned about things like shots with lots of fine detail or low light shots where skies can get grainy. Since my phone photos are always my second choice and because I use them when I didn't have a "real" camera, I keep the scene simple, shoot a lot, delete a lot and do some careful editing. I'd always rather have a larger lens and more pixels, but I don't want to lose an opportunity because I don't have a bag of photo stuff on my shoulder.

With that said, I'm really pretty amazed that I get such good pictures out of a camera that's the size of a pea that I carry around in my pocket.

Bill Swartwout

Heya, Doug. Thanks for the tip on the Pro Camera ap. I just downloaded it and I am impressed.

@ Doug. It's always been said the best camera to have is the "one you have with you." I am a firm believer in that and I do upload iPhone shots from time to time. I am seriously planning to upgrade from my 6s - but likely not more that the newer SE model. That still has 12 MP but does have a better processor. If I were to move up to an 11 I may be able to retire the DSLRs for most travel photography.

Thanks Bill, Pro Camera is a great app and really works well with iPhone/iOS photography. I really recommend the 11 pro max, but the price isn’t coming down as it seems overall it’s a better all round phone than the 12, a lot of that is cosmetic.

I’ll wait until next year.

Good to hear you have the Pro Camera App. The editing is amazing, you can even go over some of your previous photos, the box bottom left that shows your last image, tap that and your camera roll collections will appear. There is so many great options on there and if you get in to the settings and find the copyright section, you can add your name, so when you upload your image anywhere on the internet, your name is logged as the copyright owner. Have fun with the app and learn what the app is capable of, well worth the money.

Thanks so much. I def need a tutorial.

May I ask another question. My images are being saved down below 12MP though. As an example 2500x3500. Always in the 2 and 3s .. Never reaches near 5000x4000. Should I be concerned? Or is there a setting that need to me fixed to increase this. This just exemplifies how a much of a beginner I am.

Thank you again for your patience.

Douglas Brown

Go in to your settings and look for File Format. Select Jpeg and that should show Jpeg 100%, but scroll down to Advanced Settings and set your compression to high quality, it’s a sliding bar. That will increase the file size.

100% high quality setting indicates a lossless compression.

You should be able to get a tutorial on YouTube Try, understand Pro Camera App Settings. Something should come up.

Mary, the camera in the 11 is VERY capable. Our daughter has one and I used it for several "sample" shots. It convinced my to replace my 6s with the SE (less expensive) version of the 11. Retail around here was $399. Then I read all the nice reviews about the upgraded image processing in the 12 and decided to add a few bucks and get the 12 Mini - at $729.

Well, when we went to the T-Mobile store they were offering a buy-one-get-one offer on the (full size) 12, which was only $100 more than the Mini. So my wife also decided to upgrade her 6+ - and we walked out with two new iPhone 12 phones. I couldn't be happier with the phone upgrade. Below is an image I shot while out walking yesterday afternoon.

Check out my new site (that I'll be slowing developing) about cell phone art photography: https://www.myphoneography.com/ - where I'll be looking for a few guest posts - about great photographs coming from a cell phone. Any brand or model.

I finally got around to using the iPhone 12 Pro Max for quick and dirty shots along the road. Some look pretty darn good on the phone so I want to transfer them to PC and see how they look on a larger screen but have been unable to copy them to an external drive connected to the PC.

Used a USB adapter to connect iPhone to the PC.
PC recognizes the phone. Using Windows Explorer to navigate to the folder on the phone, I can see the photos here:
This PCApple iPhoneInternal StorageDCIM100APPLE
I then did a "select all" and copied but cannot paste the files into a PC folder.
Error message reads: "Error Copying File or Folder. The device is unreachable"

Internet said to download newest iTunes app for PC. Did so, then opened iTunes on PC, navigated to DCIM/100APPLE folder on iPhone; tried to open single image file but again, received error message, "The device is unreachable".

Internet said to select the Start button and then select Photos to open the Photos app. Did so.
Internet said to select Import > From a USB device, then follow the instructions. Did so. It recognized the phone but when I chose it, I got a big, fat "Something went wrong" error message, followed by a bunch of verbiage that boiled down to not being able to access files on that device.

Someone please tell me what the heck I'm doing wrong. Stupid devices.

Bill Swartwout

Kathleen, when I first started using my 12 I would email a few images to myself, copy them from the email and paste into Photoshop Elements.

Also, I went into the phones Settings --> Camera --> Format - Checked Most Compatible. The "high efficiency" mode requires less memory for storage within the phone but is not compatible with most editing software.

Now I use a UBB cable from phone to PC. Once I plug it in the phone will ask (after several seconds of waiting) to "Allow this device to access photos and videos?" After I click "Allow" I can see that DCIM folder and 100APPLE folder. After opening that I simply "drag" the JPG files I want to another folder on my computer. It works well - once I figured out that routine - and is much faster than emailing images to myself.

Good luck.

BTW - I recently sold an iPhone panorama of a complete rainbow that I shot with my old iPhone 6s in St. Kitts and Nevis two years ago. I had uploaded it as a 4500x1800 px image. It is another example of the best camera being the one you have with you. We were on a Caribbean cruise and I was on the top deck or our ship after a rainstorm passed by. My Nikon was eight decks below in our stateroom - but my iPhone captured a "sellable" image.

I have the iphone 12 pro! Love it! It has great portrait settings and the video is top notch quality! The pixels on the phone are as high as a pro camera. Well worth the upgrade!

Beautiful photo, Bill!

Unfortunately, that method didn't work for me, nor have the other 5 methods I've tried. The PC does recognize the phone and I can navigate to that folder but that's where it stops dead. I've run Device troubleshooter, downloaded iTunes to the PC (though what that has to do with downloading photos is a mystery), and am in the process of downloading a 5.19 freakin gig update to the stupid iPhone. Approx 7 more hours to complete that little honey over my horribly crappy Frontier connection.

The photos look fine on the screen of my iPhone Pro Max also but they aren't much good if I can't edit in PS. Maybe I'll try whatsapping them to my PC.

Edit: Nope. Stupid phone. Stupid PC.

Just a little aside.... keep the iPhone 12 at least 6 inches away from your own (if you have one) or anyone's pacemaker or implantable defibrillator. The battery or charger can interrupt the operation of or deactivate an implanted pacemaker or defibrillator.

Sorry, Kathlern, I don't know anything about the copying problem you're having.

That's OK, Joy. Just good to see you here!

Finally!

Really clumsy interface, IMO, but I got it done. Not sure if I could figure out how to do it again though.
On the phone side, I went into the gallery and selected all the files then shared to Chrome. on the PC side, I poked the phone icon within iTunes on the PC, poked File Sharing, then chose Chrome. Magically, all the files were sitting in Chrome, so I did a Select All/Save, then pointed the files to the folder I'd created on an external drive. At least, I think that's what I did, LOL! Anyway, they all saved to the external drive and will open in PS.

Only opened a couple in PS. Photo quality is better than I expected. A step up from the Android photos on the other phone.

Yay, Kathleen. Glad you figured out something that works.

The iPhone 12 images really are good. 12MP of quality images can be used for quite large prints.

Douglas Brown

Personally i don’t use photoshop, i upload straight from the 12pro max, but i edit firstly on my ProCamera app (worth the affordable yearly subscription) which has great editing features including auto correct and lots of etc. Once edited my image automatically converts from Raw to .jpeg (ProRaw) job done. My ProRaw is set to the highest quality so the auto conversion is lossless. Saves a lot of time.

Good luck Kathleen i’m sure your photos will be excellent quality using the 12pro max.

Kathleen Bishop

Douglas, I looked at the ProCamera app but couldn't find information on the subscription price. Looks like there's a one-time price of $8.99 for the regular version. What does the subscription cost, how often is it charged, and are the ProCamera Up version's bells & whistles worth the extra cost? What does that do that the poor person's version does not?

Here's a general question - on my Android, when I made in-phone edits, it always saved a copy of the original photo. That doesn't seem to be the case with the iPhone, and I don't see a setting to keep a copy of the original. What am I missing?

Douglas Brown

Hi Kathleen, i got the yearly at £5.49, best to check out the app on the app store and see what it says there, but the yearly subscription is for the amazing Pro Camera up features which has great features such as Auto Correct, amazing specialty filters, exposure bracketing to increase dynamic range and safeguard private lightbox folder to keep your photos private. Other 1 off in app purchase add ons include, HDR £3.99, Night Camera & Slow Shutter £3.99, the rest is covered in your subscription. Read the reviews and check out my Edinburgh & Beyond Collections to see some of the photos i’m producing, i love the app, it’s easy to use and you will get the hang of it in no time.

If you do buy in to it and need help finding your way around just ask, but like all new things we work it out.

Good luck with the decision on wether to download the app.

Kathleen Bishop

So, it's not just a RAW editor, but a substitute capture program? In other words, does it take shots with its controls rather than those built into the iPhone?

Bill Swartwout

So far I am using the ProCamera free version - and certainly like it. I like that I can make adjustments when taking a shot - just like with my DSLRs. I will upgrade to the paid “goodies” soon. Hey for only a few dollars a year, why not? I am now also beginning to use it for editing - and that’s why I’ll subscribe to the full set of features.

Kathleen Bishop

Bill, did you figure out what they charge for an annual subscription? I'm looking at the features on the Apple site but they don't spell out the cost up front for the pro version.

Douglas Brown

As it says in the app store, it brings pro level DSLR camera features. You can preset in auto or do manually, it’s up to you Kathleen.

Do what Bill has done, download free app, set your copyright, format preferences and etc. Tap the shop icon and see what’s available there and tap on everything in there to learn what they can do and offer.

There’s no cost upfront for the subscription, you get a free trial for a couple of weeks. The subscription is for the Pro Camera Up Features which are not available in the free app, i guess £5.49 in dollars is around the $8.99 mark. in pence i worked it to be 10p a week or less than 20 cents a week (i may be wrong wrong lol) in US money.

Truly compliments the iPhone camera technology. You can also take your photos with your normal iPhone camera and still edit those with the Pro Camera app. Shoot Raw then edit in Pro Camera or shoot ProRaw in Pro Camera App then edit there.

I hope i’m not confusing you Lol

Kathleen Bishop

No, actually, that makes it pretty clear, thanks! I'm pretty tight-fisted but 20 cents a week doesn't scare me too much, LOL.

One more question - do you see any difference in RAW quality between shooting with ProRaw in the Pro Camera app vs. shooting RAW with the normal iPhone camera?

Downloaded and activated. Cool! Thank you!

Douglas Brown

No difference they are both DNG files and as soon as you edit within the app they will automatically save as .jpeg. You will have to go to the in app format settings firstly, tap box with 9 dots (turns blue) then on the left settings will appear, tap that, now tap file format, tick Jpeg then tap below Raw Format, tick the Pro Raw, now tap advanced settings, set both to 100% high quality, this gives you lossless .jpeg files after editing to upload here straight from your iPhone.

Now go back to your in app camera, top left, tap on the 9 dot box again and your control panel will appear, look at the options on screen, bottom left of the 3 rows, select Pro Raw. Your now all set to take your photos shooting in Raw.

Hope this helps and be sure to tap the shop icon to learn about everything and what the features do.

Good luck.

Why wait, take some shots around the house Lol.

Thanks Kathleen i updated the instructions to ensure you got what i was saying. Be sure to go to the Shop and check all the features there, i’ve had the app for years, there is two one off in app purchases i recommended earlier.

Enjoy.

Too darn cold (and I'm too darn lazy) to do anything but huddle under the electric blanket and mess with edits.

$5.99 a year U.S. for the upgrade. I'm in! Worth it just to get rid of distortion. I did notice that ACR (Adobe Camera RAW) will enable lens correction on iPhone pics if you tell the Profile that the image was shot with Apple.

Douglas Brown

In settings check out Creative Cloud (services) this allows you i think to save an image file to Adobe Photoshop CC or Adobe illustrator, i don’t use photoshop, but worth checking out.

Kathleen Bishop

I don't have Adobe subscription - still using CS6, but I may have Lightroom on the new phone. It's on one of them.

I hope the phone's camera doesn't turn out to be too good. Don't want to become too lazy to use a real camera. It's handy in some situations though, even when you have a camera. I was with a herd of horses last week and they were way too close and way too active for me to have enough response time or distance to get clean shots with the DSLR but it was pretty easy with the phone. I like its "Live" feature that takes a burst when things are moving.
