Asking For Constructive Criticism

Hello, everyone. I haven't quite yet decided if I should upload any of my paintings. I was going to have masks made of one of my paintings but so many other people wanted a mask I was thinking about uploading the photo and allowing them to order their own. The thing is, I took the photo as best I could with my Canon Rebel and cropped it as best I could. I'm not sure if it's print quality. AND as you can see by the painting, my aim was to paint a rough looking vertical Canadian flag. But as a print I'm concerned it won't translate well. If this photo is in any way not up to quality for a respectable print, please let me know. Thank you so much!

Seems good to me, mybe closer cadar to fit right on mask, maybe landscape shape with keeping verical orientation of the flag..

I think it will work well and looks great for a print. If you're creating art specifically for a certain type of print, keep in mind the proportion or actual dimensions that you need to match.

It's hard to say Dave, you don't have it in your collection. Quality will depend on resolution. Highest res will translate into highest quality. If you're going to put it out there, brighten it up a bit and let the red show.

you haven't uploaded anything. there is no way anyone can tell if it will print or not. i need to see it up close. but really, that's up to you. did you view the image at a 100%? (not fill the screen but it shows 100%). then look at it, does it look clear? sharp? or is it blurry or noisy?

that's how you decide. but we can't tell you based on that image.

Go ahead and upload it - so we can get a better look at what you've done. Right now, the image looks fine, composition wise, and it may translate well to a face mask.

as a face mask almost anything will probably look ok. its when its a large print that's an issue.

Thank you for the replies! Much appreciated! After reading the details and instructions in the link Abbie provided I think I'll attempt to improve on the photo by taking more shots and run them through some image software to try and improve on it. I'll then upload it and ask you advice. Thank you!

I used the GIMP application to improve the photo. Being a file of xcf out of the application, I converted from xcf to jpg using an online converter and it lowered the file size from 18.7MB to 1.42MB. Is that a possible issue?

it shouldn't be that small. what are the pixel dimensions?

because you could have layers there that made the file larger, but it shouldn't really ever compress to that level. but again without you uploading the sample, we can't tell. be sure to leave the close up on.

also don't use an online covert, export as a jpg in gimp. who knows what the online version is doing to it.

I just found 'Export' in the GIMP software. It allowed me to save as jpg and lowered to 6.79MB. Is that sufficient? Sorry, most of this is all brand new. I'm learning from reading this discussion board and only just downloaded GIMP.

Thank you, Mike! I'll avoid the online converter.

Pixel dimensions are 2250x2920.

I've uploaded the photo. Please, if there is any issue or improvements necessary at all, let me know. I'll do so. And if the painting itself just isn't FAA quality, I completely understand. Thank you so much!

quality looks fine, its a touch dark, but it looks ok. if i can see the canvas clearly, then its sharp enough.

yeah 7mb for that for that size is about right. if it were nearly entirely black, then a small size is ok because it compresses well. but with all the canvas there, i don't see how it could have made it that small.

Thanks, Mike. I agree, a bit dark. I attempted more lighting but I couldn't capture the original paint colors quite right and it began to wash out the detail. If it looks too cool in color, I could warm it up a bit.

Mike Savad

you could just bump it up in levels, a little bit of mids and then lights. you could warm the reds but i don't know what the original looks like.

Yeah, I'm with Mike.

It needs an overall bump in brightness.

With either photoshop camera raw or lightroom, I'd use the exposure slider. Don't know if GIMP has a version of that.

GIMP definitely has levels and curves adjustments copied from photoshop and I'd use either one, possibly set to "luminosity" if the color or saturation shifts too much.

I brightened and warmed it up slightly. I'm much happier with it now. Thank you so much for the help! I've just learned so much! Let me know what you think of the changes!

seems better. for future reference you can edit and replace the photo instead of erasing it. be sure to have a better description and a lot more keywords.

Ok, thanks, Mike. I'll take a look around the site for examples!

striped, flag, maple leaf, is there another name for the flag? patriotic, proud, majestic i guess, red, white, vertical, there is a french version of this also. its probably safe to mention the different provinces it represents. it works like that. list everything there is in that scene.

https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/national-flag-of-canada
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Canada

you can use that as a description just reword a bit of it.

Ok, I'll add those. And continue to add as they pop in my head. Thanks, Mike!

I ordered some face masks. Can't wait to receive them! I like this. I was going to paint some flags for my neighbors on each side but I'll just order some canvas prints instead. :)

That is going to make a cool mask and other products too. Good luck!

David Durocher

Thank you, Shelli! I'll take photos of the masks when they arrive. :)

I received the masks a couple of days ago. The quality of the masks are good. Unfortunately the printed area meant to be white came out very beige and pink with no white at all. So it isn't obvious that it's meant to be a Canadian flag. I probably won't wear them because they look a little bit like watered down blood on white cloth. Not a good look when you're in public. Can the mask option can be taken off the available items?

Remove your markup. Not even a space. Definitely no zero. Leave the markup area blank

David Durocher

Abbie, thank you. I just deleted the image altogether to avoid any issues. Just in case prints and other items were to print the same. I'm so disappointed. I really wanted to sport my own painting on masks. I feel I wasted people's time and my money. I guess I should've just bought one instead of four as a test. That'll teach me. Thanks for all the help in trying to help me, everyone. Apologies.
