Flatten The Curve

This is an extension of the previous Post "Now Wash Your Hands" which is located here and contains a huge amount of links, data and discussion on the SARS-Cov2 coronavirus causing the COVID-19 pandemic: https://fineartamerica.com/showmessages.php?messageid=5202913

Abbie suggested that one was closed down, and I agree, as it was getting too unwieldy, but you will still have read-only access to it using the link above (or just looking for it)

I was unable to edit the original post after 24 hours so could not add guidance after the discussion took off.

Again, previous post, with huge list of resources, can be find here:Now Wash Your Hands is HERE

This new thread is to discuss information related to the COVID-19 pandemic as follows:

1. Research relating to treatment and healthcare (please include link to direct research IF possible)
2. Updates regarding the ongoing situation - personal updates are particularly welcome (by me, at least), however harrowing, as it is the real face of the pandemic!
3. Sharing of good, scientifically plausible practices (with relevant evidence where possible) that will protect us
4. If I think of more I'll add them in the thread as this gets locked after 24 hours and I cannot edit it further.

I don't really like negatives, but this new thread took off tangentially very quickly while I was working, so:

it is NOT a place to discuss:

(a) POLITICS,
(b) RELIGION,
(c) RACIAL STEREOTYPING,
(d) APPORTIONING BLAME TO A PARTICULAR GROUP,
(e) PROMOTING CONSPIRACY THEORIES OR OTHER OFF-THE-WALL CR@P,
(f) PROMOTING SNAKE-OIL THERAPIES

Please play nicely. I am asking Abbie to eject anyone who doesn't!

This is meant to be a place to share information that someone else will find useful

** Please THINK before you POST! **
- what is the SOURCE of my information?
- is this really likely to be true? (perhaps do a bit of background reading, follow a link)
- am I arguing for the sake of it?
- am I actually ADDING to the discussion?

I truly appreciate all the posts to date and the information that has been shared. Thank you, ALL

And here's my final comment, which I have toned down considerably for the sake of those of a more refined disposition than me:

If you don't like the rules, then don't participate. It's simple. Reading this discussion is NOT mandatory. It doesn't appear on your Home Page or get sent to your email. Please sigh, ignore and more on to an alternative place of your choosing. I won't be offended.

No, really, I won't!

If you decide to stay, THANK YOU!

The stark reality is there are not enough ICU units to handle a crush of cases. You don't want to get sick and you don't want to cause someone else's death due to your selfish acts.

Social distance yourself.

Turns out from data out of the EU and US, younger people 20s into the 40s are not impervious to this disease and are falling seriously sick.

Bloomberg is usually for pay, but at the very least some stories that involve major issues around CV seem to be free access. The company has complete control over that.

That is true - it is easy to forget that people still need routine or emergency medical treatment that is totally unrelated to COVID-19 and they will be impacted greatly, too as hospitals are overwhelmed.

Now is not the time to break your hip! :-(

Richard - Yeah, I saw a disgusting post on another thread suggesting the virus "run it's course". Obviously the poster suffers from some delusion that they won't be personally impacted and has no concern for healthcare workers or their fellow citizens.

"running it's course" means thousands dying and many dying simply due to lack of access to facilities that are typically available.

David,

Absolutely. On industrial scale UV light is widely used for water disinfection. I know that from first hand. But now I am bringing this up for the following reason: many people tend to misunderstand the social distancing and self isolation as staying in home...they should stay at home, but not inside. That's my point. Especially that in northern hemisphere it is spring, and the sunshine is gradually becoming stronger in UV component.

Abbie Shores

Edward, that's actually how the UK was dealing with it until people and the WHO screamed at them

David Bridburg

Tibor,

Yes, it is the angle of the sunlight..Perhaps more than the warmth. Meaning a good angle on the hemisphere gets more of the effect.

I think this is also related to how much vit D we produce in our skin as the tilt of the earth changes visa vie the sun.

True, the pro-vitamin D is activated in skin by radiation. And it is helpful for the immune system. Also..UV light is widely used in clinical disinfection, and in food industry and food markets. Don't be afraid of the sunlight and fresh air.

Uhm...some people found very strange that humanity needs to be educated on some elementary hygiene ..such as "wash your hands"
Now I found many people who does not know anything about the therapeutic effect of sunlight. Many people in my country are taking ad literam stay in home....

The sunlight therapy is being used since the dawn of humanity. And modern science still approves that.

Edward , have you ever been in an operating room to observe how overall sterilization is done??

No matter how much sunshine a place has, if people are avoiding it by all means it might have zero effect.

Sunlight is a great thing - in moderation.

UV sterilizes by breaking down the weak bonds in DNA/RNA. We have UV sterilization lamp for our well water and we used UV lamps in the microbiology labs to sterilize surfaces. Problem is that it can also cause us issues - e.g., melanoma - for the same reason. We literally have "thick skins" of dead skin cells, so our ever shedding epidermis protects us to a large extent (as does melanin production) which is why we also need to use sun screen.

That being said, sunlight also stimulates endogenous (inside our body) Vitamin D production and Vitamin D has been shown to help immune response (even some studies with SARA-Cov 2 coronavirus which may be on old thread).

So, to Tibor's point - yes we will need to get outside if we can still maintain social distancing as a bit of sunshine has therapeutic benefit as well as the mental benefit of being "outdoors"

Things I've been doing (besides the regular hand washing/social distancing):

Taking a daily vitamin (with zinc and a little copper, thanks David B.!)
Taking fish oil caps
Using a humidifier at night
Gargling with kosher salt and warm water
Using aquaphor on my hands, especially knuckles which seem particularly prone to dryness/cracking
Stretching/strength exercises in the garage
Wiping down the interior of my car
Spraying all the light switches/door knobs/handles in the house daily
Keep a roll of paper towels in the bathroom for drying hands
Making more crockpot meals
Trying not to worry (which is hard for me)

Richard for years, I built and ran computer model simulations involving human activity on a simulated geographical grid.

The Exponential population growth curve is a mathematical function representing any rapid growth of any contagion a given population can be exposed to.

Isolation is the only measure to reduce the spread. The isolated pockets will experience the same scaled down version of the said growth curve until saturation of the isolated contagion is reached.

I supplement my income as a food delivery driver. I usually keep a good stock of hand sanitizer and 2 concentrations of alcohol. The sanitizer is for use in the car, after pick ups and deliveries. I started getting low a month ago and have not been able to restock since then. I have alternatives and as a former batch chemist I know how to mix my own if I had alcohol, but I am somewhat perplexed as to why such a shortage when we have plenty of alcohol to mix with fuel and it is made in North America. The 2 companies I diorve for are requring we have sanitizer but neither have actually come through with a supply as promised.

FWIW, Iowa has almost 4 times the population of SD and SD has roughly half of the number of reported cases as Iowa.

It's been a long time since I have been to SD but I love that area of the country and a vacation to Yellowstone and other areas and then on to Glacier National Park was one of my most memorable US trips.

How sure can you be that some of those 650 haven't gone shopping and perhaps visited Uncle Bob out at his farm?

Now you are running in circles. Of course they did. But then they all worked in the same plant, which more than likely was not doing enough to protect the workers.

Now it's a mainstream theory.

Yes, a theory. One that I don't entirely buy into. And it's mainstream because the media says it is. You are of course entitled to your thoughts, but please be careful. Keep in mind this quoted statement, "Sources emphasized -- as is often the case with intelligence -- that it’s not definitive and should not be characterized as such. ". Everything in those articles is circumstantial. Moreover it hasn't been vetted. None of the documents have been released. We have to take the word of people who are also not known to be completely honest with the public that what's in those documents is accurate and not taken out of context. As I said above it's very easy to take this kind of information and make it sound like there is/was a conspiracy. I do believe China outright lied about the data they were sharing. But I'm skeptical about the lab origin until I see positive proof. And I doubt you will ever see that. 'Nuff said.

We will see plenty of civil unrest in this country if grocery stores are closed. We will not be seeing pork deliveries via a garbage truck like they were doing in Wuhan while citizens were locked in their homes.

Properly protect those that are most vulnerable...that is the way forward.

The latest estimate is China actually had 2.9 million cases and they basically seeded the entire world while covering up real numbers and banning travel within China while buying up 2.4 billion pieces of PPE --> all the while they and the WHO downplayed the outbreak for weeks and weeks. We all know the cases and death numbers coming out of China are bogus.

Yep, the figures reported from China are spurious at best, as we said from the beginning. I don't know whether scaling up based on the Italian spread figures is the best approach (per AEI) since there may be many other factors at play, but even if this was halved it would still be over a million infected not the ludicrously low 82,000 official figure.

As to lab vs. wet-market origin - it is not important at this precise moment, imho. We will need to find out eventually, but all efforts should still be focused on contain and control (and protection).

We need global collaboration at the moment not the political shenanigans which are being exhibited by all sides...

Yes, a theory. One that I don't entirely buy into. And it's mainstream because the media says it is

Actually, it was Chinese scientists that first said the virus probably came from a Wuhan lab. I posted that Chinese University study probably two months ago. The mainstream media has been pushing the wet market theory fo death all the while scrubbing legitimate reports, people, and lab theories from the internet. China has tried to scrub the original paper from the internet but it is still available in a couple of places. People involved at the lab and so-called patient zero have also been scrubbed and/or have been disappeared. This is now only main-stream because the State Department and the Joint Chiefs and others are on it in the US as are officials in Europe. The cables warning of the poor biosafety conditions are real as are many other reports and articles not posted here that go into depth on the people and labs involved.

Their paper, titled “The Possible Origins of the 2019-nCoV coronavirus,” begins by confirming that the China virus came from an animal known as the Intermediate Horseshoe Bat. Interestingly, the paper, published in February, has since disappeared from the international scholarly database Research Gate, but is still available through the Wayback Machine and is now available on LifeSiteNews here.

The Communist Chinese authorities initially put out the story that the bats were sold in the Wuhan wet market as food, and that a worker there accidentally became infected when butchering one of the little beasts for a customer. This story has been endlessly repeated by compliant American media outlets.

Sorry, China, but your own scientists, Botao Xiao and Lei Xiao, who work for the state-run South China University of Technology, make quick work of this story. First, they point out that there are no known colonies of this species of bat within 900 kilometers—that’s 560 miles—of Wuhan. Second, they diligently interviewed 59 people with connections to Wuhan and each and every one confirmed that there were no Horseshoe Bats being sold there.

“The killer coronavirus probably originated from a laboratory in Wuhan,” they write.

They conclude that “safety” may need to be improved in “high risk, biohazardous laboratories.”

“Regulations may be taken to relocate these laboratories far away from city center and other densely populated places,” they state.

The wet markets are being reopened in China and could be telling us much of the rest of the story.

Track down the blood, urine, and feces story and you will find it is true.

https://www.lifesitenews.com/blogs/disappeared-chinese-research-paper-traced-covid-19-to-china-biolab-in-wuhan

Let us not forget the "original" SARS virus escaped from a lab at least six separate times.

SARS has not re-emerged naturally, but there have been six escapes from virology labs: one each in Singapore and Taiwan, and four separate escapes at the same laboratory in Beijing.

https://thebulletin.org/2014/03/threatened-pandemics-and-laboratory-escapes-self-fulfilling-prophecies/

"There is a credible alternative view [to the zoonotic theory] based on the nature of the virus," a member of the UK government's emergency committee of senior officials, Cobra, told the newspaper. "Perhaps it is no coincidence that there is that laboratory in Wuhan. It is not discounted." (Business Insider)

To me

All this fuss as to whether it all started at a lab or at a wet market is a diversion to what we are facing now....They'll be plenty of time later to determine the source.

All we know is that it started somewhere and spread around the world.

And it seems a bit of wishful thinking that a case at meat packing plant , in South Dakota can't possibly spread across the Great Mid America

Reluctant to get involved...but...

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/apr/15/trump-us-coronavirus-theory-china

"The Pentagon’s top general, Mark Milley, cast doubt on the lab theory earlier this week, saying that US intelligence has looked into the possibility but that the “weight of evidence” thus far pointed towards “natural” origins.'

"Since the outbreak of the virus in Wuhan in December, more extreme conspiracy theories have suggested that it was engineered as a bioweapon. There is no evidence for this. The scientific journal the Lancet has stated the virus appears to have come from wildlife. An analysis by scientists at the Wuhan Institute of Virology suggests that the virus’s genome is 96% similar to a coronavirus found in bats."

"But the story running prominently on Fox News begins by stating the virus began “not as a bioweapon”, alleging incompetence rather than a malicious attack. This idea has gained more traction, especially among anti-China hardliners in Washington."

"On Tuesday the Washington Post reported that state department cables had warned two years ago of safety issues at a Wuhan lab studying bat coronaviruses. The Post said: “The cables have fueled discussions inside the US government about whether this or another Wuhan lab was the source of the virus – even though conclusive proof has yet to emerge.
China’s extreme censorship and lack of openness about the virus have done little to quell the speculation. But conversely, healthy scepticism is guaranteed because of Fox News’ widely panned coverage of the pandemic as well as Trump’s habit of searching for distractions and excuses to shift blame."

There is so much interesting scientific information and personal accounts on this thread it is pity if, once again, it descends into bickering about various conspiracy theories which likely discourages many contributors.

Who said that? No one would disagree. What was said that the rate of infection is lower because the population is less dense. It's both the lower population density and social distancing that's keeping the numbers low in such states.

There were several major problems for NYC. The pop density, the airports with European arrivals, being first on the east cost to have a major break out early in the game while the politicos were not on their game. Meaning the WA break out was small in comparison, and northern CA breaks were smaller as well. NYC had a flood of arrivals in a densely populated area. Testing and ventilators were not in large enough supply.

CA got way out ahead of it, but did not see a rise of the disease like NYC where it would fall way behind. CA easily could have fallen behind.

We are going to see declines soon in the numbers, I mean go back to work declines across the nation. But do not hold your breath, we are talking weeks not days. The heart of it is setting up so we can go back to quarantines, probably rolling quarantines, across the nation.

Actions currently to lift much of what we are doing as a society are premature. We do not have the testing.

The better testing will be DNA tests, when it becomes available.

We have several meatpacking plants with COVID-19 problems here in Iowa with 186 cases at a Tyson Foods plant and cases at several others. While the threat exists to plant workers and the people they come in contact with, there is no real evidence that the meat can become infected for any extended period of time. Farmers separate from the middlemen are having problems because Americans have entirely changed their eating habits.

We are cooking for ourselves. There happens to be a lot less waste.

Costco sales rocketed into the second week of March. Then fell in the third week. People were stocked up.

Plus Tupperware. Or the equivalent. The first thing I bought at Costco for this 'event' was a 38 piece of food storage containers. Zero waste and I can buy less food. Costco actually cut its own sales.

Hogs to onions are being killed and buried en mass with no middleman taking them.

The strains we think are going to be on the food supply OFTEN of our own making. Now eggs are running out. So everyone runs out for eggs.

LOL, your latest post includes a political shot at the US president from a UK publication. Those are supposedly not allowed.

For me, it's the subtle (and some not so subtle) political shots being taken and the misinformation being reported on the threads will keep me away. Not to mention all of the duplicative information. Plenty of nonsense exists on this thread and I am not talking about conspiracy theories which both the wet market theory and the lab theory could be considered.

I would rather read theories from all parties instead of reading the same lamestream media nonsense over and over again. Sure, some of the lamestream reports are fairly accurate but many/most are becoming little more than political propaganda.

I'll give you a personal account...my nephew has taken a 30-day leave of absence from his factory where they make bottles and packaging stuff. The factory is deemed essential but had some cases there and my nephew said give me a leave of absence or I quit because I feel unsafe and don't want to bring anything home to my wife and children.

My wife is a team leader at a factory deemed essential here and she continues to work where they manufacture cosmetics, suntan lotion, hand sanitizer, etc. Hand sanitizer production has been ramped up and the factory has had no confirmed cases. She works a few days a month at a four-diamond hotel/restaurant as a baker and they have been closed for weeks but they are still paying employees (I mentioned that on another thread when they closed).

Mario posted some of his personal accounts and thoughts and he was blasted...so much for personal accounts. ;)

https://medium.com/@lakshmi.santhosh/your-genetic-risk-for-covid-19-89ab983821b5

While the environment does a lot to effect DNA expression, the predisposition to a severe case of Covid is not factored by smoking, but the ACE2 variant.

Snippet:

"A paper published last week has identified 9 variants of the ACE2 receptor which could make it easier for COVID-19 to enter a cell while 17 other variants of the gene for the receptor would make it more difficult. These mutations are rare and most people will have a version of the gene which neither increases nor decreases risk but individuals with a genetic variant which makes their cells more susceptible will also make a severe reaction more likely. Individuals with protective variants should have a milder version of the disease. As a line of further inquiry, there may be higher frequencies of particular variants in some countries which could explain the higher death rates even after lack of medical equipment and higher percentage of elderly is taken into account. Preliminary results based on analysis of data from the 1000 Genomes Project suggests that differences in expression of ACE2 in people across regions could explain lower rates of COVID-19 infection in Africa."

Note this not happening because of our notions of race, but because of the development of family strains of generics around the globe. There also is not just one strain of generics within any family. There is just more or less of a predisposition to severe ARDS within each family going individual to individual.

RE: Dr. Shiva

Shiva Ayyadurai was born Vellayappa Ayyadurai Shiva in 1963, in Bombay (now Mumbai), Maharashtra, India.[2][10][11] He grew up in the Muhavur village in Rajapalayam, Tamil Nadu.[12][13] At the age of seven, he left with his family to live in the United States.[14]

In 1978, as a 14-year-old high school student, Ayyadurai attended a summer program at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences of New York University (NYU) to study computer programming. While a student at Livingston High School in New Jersey, Ayyadurai volunteered at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) where his mother worked.[15] There he created an email system to emulate the paper-based interoffice mail system then in use at the medical school.[15][16] In 1982, he registered the copyright for his software, called "EMAIL", as well as for the program's user documentation.[6]

Ayyadurai's undergraduate degree from MIT was in electrical engineering and computer science; he took a master's degree in visual studies from the MIT Media Laboratory on scientific visualization; concurrently, he completed another master's degree in mechanical engineering, also from MIT; and in 2007, he obtained a Ph.D. in biological engineering from MIT in systems biology, with his thesis focusing on modeling the whole cell by integrating molecular pathway models.[17][18][19] In 2007, he was awarded a Fulbright U.S. Student Program grant to study the integration of Siddha, a system of traditional medicine developed in South India, with modern systems biology.[20][17]
(Wikipedia)

Before we dive right in, here is a little background about Dr. Shiva. He has four degrees from MIT. He graduated from MIT in 1986 with a degree in electrical engineering and computer science. He has done extensive research at the molecular level and he was also speaker at National Science Foundation for the science of information on the immune system. Dr. Shiva also holds a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from MIT. In 2004, he returned to MIT to work on a Ph.D. in systems biology, a relatively new field that integrates biology, engineering and computer science. (TechStartup)

FWIW, Deep State is a term used by probably half of the US population that keeps up with the news, politics, and current events. Some will call it a conspiracy theory, others that do a bit more research into the topic may think it is something much closer to real including past US presidents that talked about certain industrial complexes as well as the CIA being placed into news organizations (which actually happened). Our previous president once again made it legal for the US Government to publish fake news and lies as propaganda which could be tied to the Deep State (if it exists) and/or others. Some think term also may apply to unelected officials deeply entrenched into the US Government.

I was asking Kathy. But thanks anyway

We do not need politics in this thread.

Anyone who brings them in again, or anything on that list, will be removed for the rest of the year.

Kathy, boosting the immune system is the most responsible thing we can all do right now, something that will yield real results and really help in preventing infection to others and even help in getting that herd immunity which is the only thing that's going to stop this virus for sure.

4 weeks and we are past the peek, Hmmm, that is exactly what Prof. Knut Wittkowski said would happen.

Interesting the White House press briefing is showing these charts that are comparing the Influenza A &B and corona virus tracking, amazing all viruses look like they followed the same pattern in these charts that are being shown as they discuss reopening the country, this is exactly what Prof. Knut Wittkowski meant when he said covid 19 was fundamentally no different than the flu or influenza. He did say it might be a little more severe.

This is all good news I think, hopefully it will quell the hysterics.

I tried, but I can't be bothered anymore since every time I leave to do something I need to do, like cut the grass as the sun is shining between the weird snow flurries, this thread just degenerates into a slanging match and I really cannot be arsed to follow up anymore.

Please ...

Keep whatever faith you hold;

Be safe;

Think of your neighbors;

So long, and thanks for all the fish (NOT for the faint of heart...)

See you on the other side ;-)
