Apparently according to some studies how good and how valuable an artist work is perceived by the public is directly related to how crazy they are thought to be. If this is true would it cause you to behave any differently just for the sake of sales and catching a higher price?

Interesting postulation. Crazy? Insane crazy.? Off-beat crazy? Neither, me. Just crazy enough to
please myself, and damn the money, fame. So far,I've still got two ears......to see you with, my dear...........
Crazy zany as a fox......just ask me.......I TALK TOO MUCH.......

So far I did not created any art work " just for the sake of sales".
I will continue to do that ... unless some really-really crazy sale (like more than 100 times over an average sale price) happens :-)

I'm called crazy by my real life friends. I'm getting worse as I grow older. It gets to the stage where you don't much care any more what people perceive you to be, and you just be who you are naturally

Roger that photo has always been one of my favorites....
Roger "If this is true would it cause you to behave any differently just for the sake of sales and catching a higher price?" No, I would continue being my true self without giving it a second thought....excuse me, have you lost your mind....lol, lol, lol.
I have been called crazy from time to time and I agree with Abbie, just be who you are naturally.....I just have to laugh out loud, I once told my mother I thought I was going crazy, her response was Michael you are not going crazy, :only a doctor can tell you, you are crazy, lol, lol, lol
Now this is an example crazy Halloween Night in New Orleans......I look like a dwarf next to the stranger from Los Angels, CA I just had to get a photo op, no one would believe me if I told them I met a 7 ft Glenda The Good Witch lol, lol, lol. I used non toxic glow in the dark paint, face, arms and legs.....it appears I have a cigarette in my mouth, my teeth appeared to be glowing white.....lol, lol... and a self portrait of my painted face....

Too right, Abbie........P.S. Huh? Ain't this 'real life'?............I thought it was...........................

I'm already odd enough, and shunned by modern day society. Sadly, it hasn't made any increase in sales. Maybe after I die sales will skyrocket!

I think crazy means "interesting" or "passionate". No one wants to buy from someone normal, boring or dead inside. It shows in their work.

Edward,
I think you must be right or almost every artist I know would already have fame and fortune.

The really crazy artist does not give into trends - and thinks that his art will sell anyway, or that trends will change enough where his art will be popular. (i.e. it is crazy to not give into trends because you won't make much money by not giving in, yes?).
We are all capable of making art that is smelly and disgusting, or seriously ugly, or seriously banal, or seriously simplistic, or markets yourself as a the craziest lunatic alive.
Takers anyone?

Years ago while doing the same art fair that I am doing this weekend, a "lady" walked past my booth and said, "you must be really screwed up in the head if you think you can impress us with your art." I do not believe this type of belief helps my sales at all.

If crazy does not come naturally, then I think that it is very high risk to TRY to be crazy. What if it doesn't work, and all your more conservative associations have written you off as a hopeless basket case, which forces you into defensive social isolation, which could cause depression, resentment, serial killing tendencies, mass shooter complex, or some other socially disconnected malady.
Well, maybe that's a little over the top, but you get the idea. If you are not crazy naturally, then don't try to be.

My Mum definitely was NOT crazy and used to crow about it happily. She knew .wasn't because they gave her a certificate saying so when they released her. She was an artist
All I know is, sometimes I think it was not worth chewing through the straps every morning

Hahaha, no just going to be myself! I had one of those personality profile tests with a group of people I used to work with and after the results we physically moved into the areas with like tested people. On one side of the room was one group, on the other side was the second group of like people. I sat by myself. It was pretty eye opening for me, as far as making me aware of how others view things, bc most of the time I am seeing things through an artist's eye. : )

Ronald I don't think I have it in me to do a different kind of crazy just for money and fame. :-)

It gets to the stage where you don't much care any more what people perceive you to be, and you just be who you are naturally.
I'm not really crazy in all honesty. I'm quite level headed, but am also the woman seen around town in a car with stickers all over it, (puppy paws, obviously) who wears mismatched items as I have the fashion sense of a gnat, and who goes out in the storm to dance in the field. I'm the one who often walks the dogs in bare feet because I forgot my shoes and can't be bothered to go back for them. So people perceive me to be crazy when in actuality there is a good reason for everything.
I also hug trees..... But only when I think they need it.
I would LOVE my art to portray me... But it's the one thing I'm really uptight doing :-/
But only I have to live at being me.... So I just don't care about people who grew up too soon. (Around 100 is just right to finally do that)

I believe myself not to be crazy but that is a crazy thing to do therefore I must be crazy.

I think that if you are an artist, you are 'special', different, passionate, sensitive and quite often rejected by the normal world. Just the way we are made. Imagine trying to create void of those personality traits.....Our art would be bland, just color on paper or canvas. I think we all have a mutual understanding and continue to accept one another for our craziness and quirks. Artists are probably the only people that I can communicate with on a comfortable level because of their beautifully creative minds. ♥
4 Years Ago
"what do you think of public perception?"
Being quirky, interesting and special in some way is a hook needed to propel oneself out of the crowd in the artworld.
You need press and press ain't going to happen if you are completely dull and normal.

I loved it when, at shows, while being in the back of my booth, people would peer around the corner to see what this guy, who creates all this "crazy" stuff, looks like
4 Years Ago
I have always been fairly level headed. Working as a elementary art teacher, a very conservative environment, crazy just would not fit in. That is one thing I love about art, it is my outlet where my brain can wander wherever it wishes!

Drew " it's a chicken and egg situation.." That's great!
Abbie, "So people perceive me to be crazy when in actuality there is a good reason for everything." I love that!
It seems to be that if you are an artist you are therefore perceived to be crazy, you can do something, or have an idea, or whatever, and if whoever is doing the analyzing of said thing sees you as, say an engineer, it all makes sense. Throw artist into the equation and you just might be seen as the "crazy artist".
Kind of like being blonde (for a woman anyway)
Val, an interesting perspective. The social devaluation of the professional artist. They must be crazy for they are artists.....
Val, it was I not Drew (the "chicken and egg situation") ;-)
Abbie, a few minutes by hand. A Python script would be better. I'll maybe write it and then I can easily swap any two words. Chicken and egg comes to mind. When I have the code I can replace letters with colours...
...and this is how I look crazy (maybe). I certainly feel that way quite often. A simple trigger gets me jumping off down a tangential path!

Dave, the best that I can recall is one just adds a constant to the ASCII character at the position of the character in the string of the character to shift case format.
that constant is the difference between the lower case binary value and the upper case binary value. It looks to be a fore-next algorithmic loop.
That would do it Drew. There are a number of different ways to loop through a problem in Python. I like to use recursive functions where appropriate.
I use Python a lot, alongside Processing. Python gets used for creating static outcomes and processing for both static and dynamic (kinetic) outcomes.
I like processing for real-time kinetic outcomes (animations) and there are examples at http://xyz.revad.com (should anyone be interested).
Anyway, I am wandering off subject.
I think it is useful to be a little crazy in order to make art.
And, I think making art can make us (at least) appear a little crazy.
When I get my teeth into a project, I can become driven and block everything else out. This can look like 'crazy' from the outside!

For me growing up with parents, Aunts, Uncles, Grandparents that were all artists becoming like them was just more normal than doing what others do. From the outside that may seem crazy. From where I stand much if not most of the rest of the world is about is pretty crazy.
There is the possibility that I Drew, exist in a universe alone and all that is perceived is simply here for my entertainment. Crazy is as crazy perceives.
I see myself as possibly crazy and/or possibly the most sane person I have ever known.
I was born with imagination and I inherited my art somehow, the art of abstract thinking. I also love math, not science; made a career mistake and entrapped myself with applied math in science, but math is a lovely language to me.
I have always seen things, smelled things, heard things in moments that people around me don't perceive. As an artist, I am very self aware and situationally aware, my tenticals go very far possibly 100 feet or more. I know when I walk into a room if extreme stress is occurring or if someone is to be sick, I know even before they do.
I understand dangerous people long before anyone else does and I remember stuff no one remembers, so I am off my rocker... but no one in their right mind treats me that way.
People trust me and that is a huge burden because I am the knowledge seeker among family and friends. I can never lose my cool and temper... ever as much as I would like to.
I am crazy, I'm down right kooky and comical most of the time, and my closest friends and family would back me up on that lol. I don't know how well that would help with my art business though since my art is probably the most normal thing about me lol.

Thanks Abbie! After a pinch of mummy dust with an eye of newt, and taking my blue pill ( the red one suckz), Dr. Jung introduced me back into the quantum fabric. Now Carl and I are one with the Matrix; 7 of 9 never looked better. Time to adjust the newly attached Nexus 6 and count electric sheep cuz real sheep are too expensive.

Not sure where, Drew.
That's some original Joe Burgess right there!
But then when I went to find how absolutely unoriginal I am, I came across this little nugget...
"Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one."

It was 1984. I was 5 years old.
My brother had gotten his hands on a very special VHS cassette tape.
Next thing I know, I'm watching some creepy hairy dude crawl around in a tree singing, "Bark at the Moon."
It was a defining moment in my childhood.
Since that day, crazy has been something to observe and develop, not fear.

And now that I've got you clutching your pearls, here's another message from the Prince of Darkness...
Well, I'm already considered crazy. I'm a conspiracy theorist/truther. I believe there are false flags and hoaxes that the media shows for propaganda. I believe the Earth is probably flat. Definitely, I think the moon landing was a hoax. I totally think most of what we been told is ancient world history is complete fiction, and a lot of the stories we are told were just make-believe have a little truth in them. I don't really like most movies, TV shows, and pop music, because I think it's full of subliminal messages. 5G isn't really safe. Pizzagate is real. The Mandela Effect is a real phenomenon, somehow. I find most celebrities to be a bore (at best) and many underdogs/weirdos/idiots to often be misunderstood geniuses! So, I am already "crazy" by many people's standards.
I have made a small number of sells elsewhere. But, this is the beginning of my second year on FAA, and I still haven't made one sell yet! So, I'm not really sure if the theory is true that being crazy helps an artist get sales. Unless, I become super famous after death, like most of the "craziest" famous artists.
I don't think it's possible for me to get any crazier, just to make sells. Besides, I am so off-beat already that if I attempt to be what seems crazy to me, I'll probably just come across as normal.
