Help With Domain Name Please

Hello,

Prior to me joining FAA/Pixels...just a month ago, I had been trying to build my own website with Wix. I tried and could not, however I bought my domain name from Wix, at around $25.00 per year, with the added security. I am ready to cancel that account as it never was even published. My domain name is, dmlynchphotography.com, and I was told from an IT this morning, that I can keep that domain, as long as I keep paying Wix as the host owner yearly. He was difficult for me to understand with a heavy accent. It expires in Oct.'19. Do you agree? Also, if I transfer it here, will it go directly to my homepage?

Thanks in advance and have a great day!

You cannot transfer it here so yes, you will need him to keep it. Ask him to put this in writing

Check that you can POINT a domain to another site before agreeing to anything

If you are on a free account, just log into your Domain Host and look for Forwarding.

Please note that, at present, our sites are SSL certified but a domain pointed would not be. So you may prefer to do it another way using my personal tutorial which will make things secure for you https://ourartsmagazine.com/ssl-domains-on-pixels-com

Diane,

You might be able to transfer the domain to

https://domains.google/#/

This would be much less expensive and safer business wise. Now in the distant past many smaller domain companies went out of business, stranding users.

I have a Google Domain for my blogger account. But have not looking into any other Google Domain policies.

Also SSL for a blogger or blogspot, I think I paid nothing.....zero......

PS blogger is also free from Google. A blog set up on Blogger is known as your blogspot. This free option would get you in the game at no cost. Over time you would get the tech behind you to design a site. The differences between a website and a blog are somewhat minor.

Yeah, I mentioned she could transfer on her other thread.

Thank you Don,

When I posted the new discussion I didn't see it come up, so I did it twice.

Thank you David,

My goal was to have a website for a portfolio. I am not a technical person.
I may as well cancel it as what I have here is working great!

I am on the pro-plan now at 3-d-lynch.pixels.com

I would just be out $25.00.

I have a business account on Instagram that I was planning to link this too.

Would that be okay?

Not sure what you mean by linking your Instagram account. If you forward a domain, generally speaking, you can only forward it to one address. That said, you can forward a domain to an Instagram account.

Diane,

Yes putting the 3-d-lynch.pixels.com in your IG bio makes more sense than having another website.

Particularly because the new AW looks much better. JMO

Diane,

Suggestion for your AW and FAA/Pixels profiles, organize some collections/galleries.

Your AW is bereft of Collections. So you have

Collections...empty....you fill it in on your FAA or the equal Pixels profile.

Images....with images...

About......which I am sure you are an interesting person and can fill in......

Don,

On my IG business account profile there is one line, where a website would typically go, however people put their Facebook page there, which we already have that option, so I will direct people here using my new domain here. I'll give it a try once I figure out how to use my new "store."

Everything else, is over my head, for now. I have read Abbie's links and you seem to be the pro at this. I just want to be sure I don't regret canceling my domain name with Wix.

For IG, the syntax...which has to be completely accurate....

Diane,

No need to cancel it. Work with Google Domains to transfer it to them. Then it will be parked for future use. You have a more common name. You might want something easy for people to look up. That is a different matter, but parking, as it is called, a domain is a good idea.

Just a suggestion.

Is not developed so I don't see what you would be losing. If you cancel the domain name it goes back into the free domain pool and someone else can purchase it. I'm not sure a big market exists for that domain name, but if you don't want to lose it, then you want to keep it registered somewhere.

Google is a new player in the domain name business...who knows when they might discontinue the service like they have so many others. ;) Just a thought...

Thank you David and Don,

Yes, I want to "park it." Thank you David for helping me with the syntax and my AW. You sound like a pro too!

Don, it is a more common name than I thought. DLynchphotography is already taken. So I put my middle initial and I go my that name (Marie) on Instagram.

Thank you, I have peace of mind now.

Have a great day!
Blessings~

Personally, I have used plenty of registrars since 1996. I used to have 100+ domains registered at GoDaddy and transferred them all to Namecheap. Good prices, good support (24/7 live chat), and good services. Namecheap has been in business for 19 years. For a single domain, it's not really a big deal. Back in the day I used to have a small domain registration service, it wasn't my cup of tea and I gave it up after a few years. I originally got into selling domains so I could sell them to myself at very good prices. When I gave it up, the domains registered through me were automatically seamlessly transferred to the company I was reselling for, no downtime or interruptions for anyone.

I am one of those people that tries to avoid Google when other viable alternatives exist. Do I use some Google services? Yes, I do.

Don,

Good to know. Why do you have so many domain names? I'm just curious....

Don Northup

I used to build a lot of photo and image sites by subject as well as a few others. Football, flowers, raindrops, abstracts, cheerleading, graffiti, hurricanes, floods, cities, states, politics, rants, forums etc. etc. Back in the day, it was very easy to rank sites in Google so that is what I did to get traffic. Occasionally, I would sell a domain for a decent price.

I have held onto around fifty of those domains to either sell or develop. It does run into some money just holding domains so getting a good price is quite helpful. ;) Today, I have probably 6 or 7 domains related to my name, a dozen sites related to the content I produce, several domains related to live rock and roll and metal music (currently what I am into), a half dozen "pros" branded image and art related domains, a couple of public domain domains, a couple related to photo businesses, and some others that I think are catchy or useful that I will develop someday. Lately, I have been concentrating on good 3 and 4 letter domains if I can get them. I have only purchased a couple of domains or less a year lately, down from the dozens I used to purchase in the past.

That said, I have thrown a lot of money down the drain on domains I never used. I was always a sucker for buying domains when they had a 99 cent or $1.99 sale and would buy dozens of them only to let them go later because I didn't have the time or lost the ambition to do anything with them, and didn't feel like paying the full price to renew them. I never got into flipping domains so my intention when purchasing was always to do something with them. Sometimes I would purchase domains to keep others from registering a similar domain name to what I was intending to use.

Cheers

It sounds somewhat like the stock market. It does take time too. I appreciated you sharing that and I do love music, as well. I imagine a lot of artists do as they go hand in hand.

Thanks again,

Time for me to get to work.

Cheers!

Hi Diane,

I see your lone gallery. When you submit an image, you need to first see that you add the image/s to that gallery. So you set up several galleries and click on the appropriate gallery boxes for each image. It can get creative when you get the hang of it.

Your sense of design is excellent. I like the images in your new sliders.

Hi David,

A heartfelt thank you for this message, with your kind words of help and encouragement.
Are sliders the "pictures" in the rooms? I do change my mind a lot or like you say play around. I was elated when I finally figured out those pictures/sliders.

When I do change my mind and try to substitute an image for a better one, the initial one doesn't get deleted, in the extra's, i.e. clothing, technology. Then, I edit and try again and the new image becomes right for half of the products, but the one that I wanted to delete, is still in some of the products. Does that make sense? In other words, is there a way I can delete an unwanted image, for good?

I am so pleased with my home page, as I love bright colors and Central America. Will that have to become a collection eventually? I was checking out some other galleries and the home page is all collections. Granted that will take time, but I'm not sure if I like that look. I feel like I have my own art gallery now that I will rotate, as I use to do in an art gallery, that I worked at. The "lone" gallery is still in the jury, but I had no idea the image goes first. Thank you for that information.

I'd really like to fix this today, as Fridays I post on Instagram and want to put the syntax in my profile.

Thank you so much in advance.

Blessings,
Diane

Diane,

If you want an image as prints and products, but not all the products....leave a blank....not a space...not a zero....leave a blank where the markup goes.

Think of computer things as behavior. You change something and the program's behavior changes.

On your FAA or Pixels profile set up a couple of galleries/collections organizing with the topic and sales in mind. Then with each image, on the FAA profile go to edit. Under the default set up, which is the edit portion, click the appropriate gallery box to insert the image in the gallery.

Then with a few images in a gallery, edit the gallery to select the cover photo.

I hope that makes it clearer. I need to take off from here for the rest of the day.

David,

Okay, I'll do my best, but I did not think we were using FAA at all anymore.

You have an amazing website!
