Where Do You Find Inspiration For Your Art?

Some artists look at the world around them and find inspiration in what they see -- nature, people, events. Some artists look inside themselves and find inspiration in what they think and feel. Do you have a technique for finding inspiration? And what do you do if you are looking to change direction and need some fresh inspiration? Any and all comments welcome.

I have found that when I am feeling stagnant looking at the sky always helps me and also looking at old things like vintage advertising and postcards, antique books etc...

I have taken pictures all my life of the places I've been and the exciting things I have seen. Now that I don't travel as much and have much more time to reflect I see many things in those pictures that are great to relive thru my painting. I won't see some of these things, as they have changed and passed into history. My thoughts and memories live in my recent paintings. Don Shaw

Before I start a new piece, I lay in bed in the morning and think about, "What do I want to do today?"

I can spend all day promoting my work, or I can create something new. Or, maybe I can do both.

I feel guilty when I am not creating. But promoting and creating are both "creative".

Often I hop aboard the Discussions Thread and realize that, "Ah Ha! This is a good way to waste my time!"

And then I join the countless number of "Use-to-be-ers" who never post anymore.

Sad. But true.

Mine is all how I 'feel' at the time, emotion based mainly, and whether it's a photograph or digital art, I will chop and change images, refine them, apply effects and sometimes come up with something I am happy with and sometimes not.

I don't need inspiration to create, my works is base on the things I interest in . I just let it lead me to different directions. Sometimes I experiment with colors, style or theme. When I don't feel like painting I would switch to paper cutting, print making or sculpture.

Among other things I “do” I paint a lot of women, musicians, and barns. I once related the choice to paint what I do comparing grabbing these ideas like a butterfly collector catching images in a net.

Whatever instinctively catches my eye,...... then working with it.

Doesn't matter whether it's a preconceived or spontaneous subject.
