As Hurricane Jose swung up the East Coast of the US in September of 2017 and slammed into the Outer Banks portion of North Carolina that juts out into the Atlantic, those of us who had chosen to spend our vacation there held our breath and crossed our fingers. Our house in the Corolla / Whalehead area was situated right on the ocean front. It was a home we'd enjoyed visiting for many years and we were delighted to revisit. That we would be riding out a hurricane with her hadn't been in our plans, but we knew it would make for an exciting week we'd never forget.
Even after Jose left the area and the skies began to clear, the choppy sea and the waves crashing over themselves in various levels continued to tease and tickle the sandy shoreline. Necessity has caused the locals to create strong dunes which usually do a good job of protecting the valuable real estate located along the shore ... and in this case the dunes in the Corolla area held fast.
