Suggestions For Calgary Visit

Hi everyone,

Next month I’m travelling to Alberta Canada for a photo tour, and I’ll have a few days in downtown Calgary before the tour starts. I'm looking for suggestions for things to do, see or photograph in Calgary.

The photo tour will have landscape photography well covered once we head out of Calgary, so I’ll probably stick to the city area beforehand and visit some gardens and maybe the Zoo. I thought an architecture photo walk might be interesting too. I have been looking for someone who runs night photo walks or workshops in the city, but no luck so far.

I’d love to hear your ideas.

Thanks
Catherine

I don't have any suggestions for Calgary but there are lots of forest fires in the Western US and most of British Columbia is on fire. It's getting pretty smokey at times in that area of Alberta and that may very well continue into September. If you get clear days up there before the tour starts and you really want landscapes it may be worth going up into the parks to get what you can.while its somewhat clear. Hopefully the tour leaders will keep an eye on the fires and smoke and try to get you to some good spots with minimal smoke in the air. If the tour doesn't include Kananaskis or the Canmore area (both on the way to Banff from Calgary) those may be areas worth exploring.

Thanks for the info Adam. I wasn’t aware of the fires. One of the tour leaders is a local photographer so I’m sure she will be watching the situation. We will be based in Canmore for part of the trip and will definitely be exploring that area.

A little smoke can create some interesting atmospheric shots. But you wouldn't want too much.

I liked the Heritage Park https://www.heritagepark.ca/

Heritage Park,
Calgary Zoo,
Go walk down the pedestrian-mostly street Stephen Avenue for old sandstone etc buildings,
Or through the glass and steel office towers downtown (some older ones along 9ave or 7ave south),
Or wander industrial areas for the grungy stuff.

Depends what you are into.

Good luck with the smoke, it’s currently at 10+ On the air quality advisories. People are being advised to stay indoors if possible and avoid physical activity when outdoors.

Not sure when you are there, but here is a blue hour workshop

Earlier today you could not see downtown from this spot :

You normally can see the mountains on the horizon too.

I'll be there towards the end of September so hopefully the fire situation will be improved by then. I feel for the people who live in the area & hope that improvement comes quickly for their sake.

Thanks for the suggestions Edward & Trevor, I'll check them out. I had seen the blue hour workshop, but its just before I arrive.

Member Bob Lentz is from Calgary. I'll send the link to this thread on to him. He's very busy with a couple of groups he moderates, so I doubt he frequents the general forum.

Highly recommend the National Music Centre (Studio Bell) just east of downtown. See https://nmc.ca/ or https://studiobell.ca/. Besides stunning architecture (https://fineartamerica.com/profiles/bob-lentz.html?tab=artworkgalleries&artworkgalleryid=759114), the music exhibits are interesting and, being inside, it's not dependent on the weather.

Here are some links I found (most of which are riddled with annoying ads - just to warn you):

https://www.globeguide.ca/best-spots-take-photos-calgary/
http://dailyhive.com/calgary/best-places-to-take-photos-calgary
https://www.narcity.com/ca/ab/calgary/lifestyle/16-unique-spots-to-take-cool-ig-photos

and you can do your own search and turn up more. I used "calgary canada photo opportunities" for my search.

Thanks for your help Nikolyn, there looks like some great spots in those links.

Bob, I love your series of the National Music Centre, they are very inspiring so I'll put the NMC on my list for sure. .
