Photojournalist Rich Clarkson

Being a professional artist is challenging but being an aging professional artist can be downright scary. How as an art community can we help Rich Clarkson?

Disturbing, yes, but only half the story. Who is the conservator? Why are literally ALL of Clarkson's staff and colleagues barred from contacting him? What's really going on here?

Iris,

Whoever wrote that is not being responsible. Just about anyone who lives long enough will have a decline in mental function.

I will give you another set of stats, you can try and google for this if you want to verify the numbers. 70% of us will end up in a nursing home, and the stay on average is 2.9 years. So for an 86 year old to be in a cramped apartment is no surprise. Also probably not accurately described in the post.

I would take the conservator as just caring for Clarkson.

Nothing more, regardless of how reckless such an internet post is.

PS, Iris, when I was 20 years old my mom, sisters and I visited the woman who baby sat one of my sisters and I age 1 and just born. She was about 86, She was living in her apartment still. She had no clue who we were. Her memory was gone. We left as a family that day think it was a mistake to bother her. We worried she would be distraught.

This should be a warning to all - you really have to be careful what you say at the doctors office. This is Colorado - but it can apply to any state I would imagine. Besides, your spouse or your children can have you declared incompetent and put you in a nursing home or some other 'facility' that will take care of you physically. We had a neighbor whose daughter did it to her mother. You also have to be careful what you put on social media - it is not "secret" and do gooders can have you visited by the authorities - not just as a danger to others but a perceived danger to yourself.

Every time, regardless of how often I go to the doctor, I'm asked the same set of questions about harming myself or others; I've been asked if I own a gun. If you call on the phone to the hospital, even if you know the extension, you get that same spiel about your mental state, thinking of hurting others or self, dial this number of hang up and call.

Failure to plan your future, should you or your mind deteriorate is terrible.

As for Mr. Rich Clarkson - his was/is a business - there must be a lawyer I would think - unless the staff is tired of him and would just as soon see him gone ($$$).

Hi Iris,
I think a lot more information is needed to make any sort of claim one way or the other. Upon the onset of my grandmother's Alzheimer's disease she would tell anyone who would listen that her car was taken away and she needed to get it back. What she couldn't remember to mention was that she kept getting lost and couldn't find her way home, she had a small fender bender in the neighborhood and fled the scene because she didn't know what to do (and once confronted couldn't remember the accident), then she couldn't pass the test to renew her driver's license. She was definitely someone who needed to be off the road! However, if you only spoke with her for a short period of time you'd think she was quite lucid and she had a family full of meanies that took her car and driving privileges away. She was stuck on this idea that she had been wronged - perhaps it's the same with Rich Clarkson? Or maybe he really has been taken advantage of? If the latter is true, in my opinion, the author needs to add a lot more information to build a solid case.
