Do You Ever Use Your Painting Skills To...

Do you ever use your painting skills for odd projects that aren't necessarily to sell an artwork?

Share what you do. If you have an image or youtube, share the link. Thanks

I painted this old broken dresser yesterday. I scribbled and streaked and brushed every direction with colorful latex paint. I told my husband it's his junk dresser to put all his junk in, he is so pleased and excited about that, I'm in shock.

I was actually going put it in a show, but now I'll let him enjoy it. I have about a hundred more antiques to process through my painting joys. I feel sorry for the furniture.

Lisa - love the dresser!

I used to paint furniture all the time. I had some sort of problem passing up some broken down thing someone was throwing out. The last piece I did I decided to sand and not prime. Big mistake. It started to peel soon after.

But painting antiques I won't, unless for some reason the value of the piece is lost due to damage or other, and well I just love a good wood piece too much!

Thank you, Val.

My other hobby (scale model building) has made use of my newly (relatively) acquired art skills. Other than that I don't think I really use my art skills for anything else.

That dresser looks great!

I painted faux marble on a bathroom wall once but I don't think I have any pictures of it.

Faux marbling on a bathroom wall is lovely.

The dresser is beautiful, Lisa.

I have done some work with painting and crafting paper mache boxes. My mac computer will not allow me to paste anything into this box for some reason.

Just last week I made a sofa table top with a distressed copper finish. It came out looking like leather.
I did faux finishes professionally for about 10 years... til I fell off an extension ladder. Loved doing that kinda grunt work.

Wow, Marlene, I bet your faux finishes were and are amazing. I did the same work for about 10 years. It's very laborous.

I work full-time in the antique restoration field. Usually it is more down-and-dirty and less art-related, like stripping finish or sanding wood, but often I am touching up finishes on furniture, artwork, frames or statues...so my art skills and color knowledge frequently gets put to use there. As it is my full-time job, one could say that I really only do my art as the side projects.

You COULD start selling dressers and the like. It's NICE!

I designed these boxes for a children's fundraiser years ago and I could not keep up with making them. The little ones loved them! Started out with a raw box. It was a lot of fun.

I used to buy plain wooden trinket boxes and paint them with elaborate decorations to give as Christmas gifts because I was not able to spend much cash but wanted to give something special. I used toothpicks and matches for brushes and enamel paint meant for model cars and airplanes, or even nail polish. then I would varnish them. I painted each one different some with flowers some with southwestern designs and recently when my husband's gramma passed they gave me back the one I had made for her so I do have a pic of it posted on my Pinterest board.

here

Btw Lisa that is a beautiful piece of furniture now! well done!

The desk I use here and to create, that holds my PC and monitor, is a large Naked Furniture piece. I finished it at age 21. I bought it just because it would be great to work on.

Actually last week I set my Wacom board aside to my other desk. When I lifted the Wacom board, I found a one inch hair buried in the finish. That happened back in 1985.

Lutz, that is stunning. I wish you would tell us how it's done. Very cool. I'm sure, however, it brings up another site for selling images for fabric. We aren't allowed to do that.

I'm guessing some company saw your beautiful designs and knew it would sell in a fabric store. That is so cool.

If you hand painted the fabric, that is even more awesome. Way to go.
