Digital Loose Painting?

Inspired by Dave Bridburg's thread (now closed) "how to paint like de Kooning and whether it was possible to do digitally, here is my best attempt and as close as I could get to the looseness of his style. I painted it with my whole mouse... using Artrage.

Titled "A Loose Mess". I am still trying to decide if I should post it to my Abstract collection or not.

as we suspected the style doesn't translate well to the digital medium but I am always up for a challenge and love to try new digital art styles, you never know what works and what doesn't until you try.

Looks nice to me

The main thing that I could not duplicate was a drippy look...

Thanks Jeff!

Looks good to me too, it's not as chaotic as Koonings work and has a softer touch to it, which I like. Might have to get a little more precise with shape creation for a drippy look.. The program I use (drawplus x8) has a paint brush that mimics paint splatters which, when used in the right way, can have an impact on any given piece you may be creating. In the sample I'll show, it's used to mimic blood splatter, but I felt it was appropriate given the context of the image. There is no brush for drips per se... splatter yes, drips no.

Shelli......Rebelle software has wonderful drips and you can send them in any direction...:)

Thanks John, maybe I will bring it into Gimp and try to get a drippy look...

Shirley thanks for the tip! I will check into Rebelle!

Okay I posted it to a new gallery dedicated to experimental work because this small view above does not really show the textures very well like the full res preview does... won't I be surprised if this sells?

I actually like the way it looks on the products.

Shelli, i am just about to discover abstract´s and i think you really should keep it - and offer it for sale. It looks like a strong and vivid image to me that deserves to be sold. I don´t know Kooning or whatever abstract artist may be out there and in general i think abstract painting is a conspiarcy of artist against good taste and common sense but i like a lot of viva´s works and some others and this one.

I just did a painting myself (latest works) but that has a very personal meaning to me and without me explaining what is to see no one will understand i think.

Hans, thanks for the encouragement!

I think abstract sometimes has to grow on you, I know it did with me. The beauty about it though is that many times every one will see something different and each viewer can have their own private interpretation.

I used to moderate a hashtag group on Instagram just for digital abstracts and I really developed a taste for them there.

Shelli, i will never ever be a huge fan of abstract but i do indeed see something in some (a few) of the pieces.

Hans, I like both of your latest works but the wild sunset is my favorite of the two.

I can see how the inferno would have personal meaning if that is the one you were speaking of.

I like the rich color and depth and light in it.

Thanks again for the compliment and coming from one who doesn't really care for abstract makes it even more meaningful! :)

You´re perfectly welcome :o) Nope, the wild sunset is the more important one to me - it´s in the description ;o) Inferno was made with the left over color from the wild sunset :o)
Thank you very much for your kind words though :o) very(!) appreciated!

Shelli,

Your painting looks very good. I like it a lot.

I do not paint digitally.

I alter photos. My results were hugely different.

Thanks Dave! And for the inspiration! I alter photos too, so I know what you mean.

I have created a few abstracts from photos just for the color palette but this style requires a special paint program like artrage with the realistic paint textures and knifes and brushes.

I can't even think of what effects I would have tried to use in Gimp!

I had fun though and want to try more.

Shelli - it looks good! If you check in the brushes in the art rage there are some combinations that mimic drips very well, although gimp probably does it better and most likely easier.

I climbed back on the fence, I'm still messing around with something but what I am finding is that some things are just more difficult to do digitally. And more time consuming.

I don't think it can't be done but how I feel when doing, is most times more important to me than the result. I get torn between wanting to continue and running to the store for paint and canvas. Did that make sense?

Last night in the wee hours, I saw a video that used drips and abstracts, but was much more modern.

I was very inspired and now am seeking out that artist to ask if I can pay homage.

My work is digital and therefore different, but modeled after her terrifically creative painting.

Val, it made sense to me! :)

Cool Dave! feel free to post links... I am always open to more inspiration!

Shelli,

I wrote Lisa Kaiser privately in the last few hours to ask her if I might pay homage to her work. She graciously granted permission earlier today.

Lisa's abstract flowers are a very useful model to making something very loose while working a digital canvas. I did not take any of Lisa's images for reference, but instead free hand used the loose concept of an abstracted flower blossom. Along with the more feminine idea of a softer aesthetic.

I can not show my work yet, I need to register my work with the USCO. That will be many months off. I am working my way over 25 images on the way towards something like 80 in the next six months.

This is not the video I saw last night. I can not find that one. But the looseness is in this.

It looks like a high-resolution texture! Nice.

I am not affiliated with Escape Motions (Rebelle painting software) but I do love it! It is (so far) the only digital painting software that can do what you see in these two vids on YouTube.

@Dave

Thanks for the video! Lisa is very gifted! loved that.

@Shirley Thanks for the links I did download the demo but it would be awhile before I could afford the full version... it is cool!

@ Jack and Val...

Thank you for the encouragement!
