An EA-18G Growler jet costs $68.2 million. It can travel at nearly twice the speed of sound. And yet, in the right hands, it can draw delicate pictographs in the sky.
Do NOT click the link if you are easily offended by boys being boys.

A spokesman for the U.S.Navy said "It has zero training value and the aircrew is being held accountable."
I, on the other hand, applaud this man's skill!
Wait until Apple starts marketing these!

But one householder told KREM 2 she was upset about having to explain to her children what the vapour trail's shape represented.
Looks line lines in the sky, a top hat or shapes.... very abstract in nature!

In today's anti-sex climate I can see where the Navy has no choice but to issue a public statement disapproving the actions of their pilots. But privately, what do you think? High fives and beer for everyone involved!
Publicly, Dora Citizen has to say she's upset. For the *children,* you see. But privately? If she's actually upset I feel for people who lead such humorless, sheltered lives.

The Cessna would be better for applying detail. The jet's good for quickly roughing out the main idea.
I'm not convinced this has "zero training value." In a war zone taunting could be valuable :-) "Oh yeah!?? Come down here and do that!"

I'm not the least bit offended, but I fail to find any humor in it either, it's just juvenile behavior of the lowest form.

No matter man's education, breeding, position, accomplishments or expectations, throughout our entire existence it only comes down to that. Centuries from now, if we still exist, men will be communicating with one another (aka marking their territory) using this timeless universal symbol.
You have to conclude that this is going to be on the side of a space station at some point.

My son drew an enormous penis across an entire set of lockers in middle school. It made him infamous.
Netflix made an entire mockumentary on it.

Hahaha, thanks a lot Dan, Roger and Angelina for actively supporting my procrastinating time this morning! :-) This pilot has some serious skills for sure, the hat is well done and the video is hilarious.
Now back to work...

But ignoring the infantile nature of it. To the original question in the title and a bit of seriousness....
"And You Thought Your Art Supplies Were Expensive"
It's subjective. I know one of our members is homeless and adds work when he can. So, subjectively, his art supplies cost him far more and are, to me, worthy of far more attention than this crud.

Roger,
Go back in and make his hat circumsized.
uh? The spell checker did not like that last word.

I'm not sure it's infantile... There seems to be a very real need for males to depict penises. It's seen in art throughout time.
A deep seeded need or attachment to evaluate fertility and virility?
The cost... Well, seriously... These stupid pilots will have consequences and be mocked forever for these actions. If course, they will also get lots of high fives. Who knows how it will effect their careers.
No one is looking at this art and appreciating it's dedication or refinement... It's just a laugh.
You're welcome Matthias. 😁

Angelina,
RE: .. "A deep seeded need or attachment to evaluate fertility and virility? "
I'm being continually accused of being too obsessed with dangly bits
Yet, with my Feral Coots, I doubt whether I'm evaluating fertility and virility

Send them to bed without their supper and move on.
And then thank your lucky stars that there are guys like this that are willing to do what they do when next week they may be shot down and killed flying a mission over a foreign land.
You can not expect to find people that are continuously willing to push the envelope and do things that put their lives in jeopardy and not find that in that same person lives a guy (or gal) that is also going to occasional draw outside the lines.
As for the choice of content in their airborne prank, men will stop being obsessed with drawing phallic symbols when people, both men, and women, stop reacting in the predictable fashion in which they do.

Dominance and fertility, among other things:
A) They are easy to draw.
B) They are hilarious.
In this case, the drawing tool of choice is noteworthy and the artist is noteworthy. You don't get to fly a Navy Growler by being an unbalanced goofball.

I have the feeling that most males that spend their time drawing phalluses , would rather draw vaginas, but have never been able to see them up close and personal.
Of course this doesn't apply to me

Roger...that seems more of an exploration of mortality, and the humor of being older and wiser.
I doubt the exploration of drawing the female figure can be a suitable replacement for drawing and exploring the male figure.
If you are a male...you have that, so it's natural to want to fully explore it. It just seems to be a stronger need for some.
It takes so long for the male prefrontal cortex to develop, what has science got that age up to now? 26? Along with the testosterone bath that every male receives in the womb, maybe women just don't find it as amusing because more of our brains are working. =P Women may explore the figure but we rarely show the extreme fascination as men.
Personally, as a Navy veteran, I think it's kind of funny...but more in the "Are you brain damaged?" way than the laugh out loud worthy.
"I'm bored...let's draw a penis, I think I can do it...no one will notice!"

I think it is disgusting and a terrible use of our government/military resources and those that did that should be punished properly!

Rose, penis art is everywhere and always has been. Ancient civilizations (especially the Romans and Egyptians) drew, sculpted, carved and painted penis' *everywhere.* There are 35,000-year-old historic cave drawings of penis'. It seems that depicting penis' is a basic human need.
The activity isn't confined to males, either. College girls are steeped in penis drawings. Starlets show up at premiers wearing dresses with penis' on them, and not implied penis' either -- literal make-no-mistake-that's-definitely-a-penis art.
Is it infantile behavior? Possibly for some, but the sheer number of penis depictions throughout history says no.
Some of the best penis art is created by people who don't even realize they're making penis art. Jeff Bezos is the richest person in the world. He is developing space vehicles. Here's a photo from his blog announcing a successful launch:
This isn't the same ol' same ol' discussion thread complaining about how this or that isn't working. It's a timely update of an artform that has enchanted millions for centuries and remains popular worldwide.
