Any Ideas?????

Hey everyone, My name is Danielle. I have been interested in photography for many years now and just getting some of my photos online. I want the right person to see the few I have posted and notice my talent. I want to be famous one day, either in photography or whatever it is. I want to see if anyone out there has any ideas they can share that will give me a direction in my life and some guidance through the photography/art world.......I am getting my portfolio together slowly, but I am also wondering if I am wasting my time since I haven't sold anything yet and I need to start making money somehow with my eye for photography. I would love to get a professional camera and learn how to take the best photos......when I am only using a digital camera as of now. I just want to know more about where I can get discovered by someone that will show me the way!!!! If you know.....please tell me!

Hi Danielle.Welcome.
I will let others with more of an eye to say about your photos.
What you do need to get found is to have a good description and have many more key words. Without that your images will never get found and you will never sell.
have a look at the sticky at the top of the page that has tips and hints.
Have a look at the thread from Mike Savad about descriptions and key words https://fineartamerica.com/showmessages.php?messageid=3755076
You then need to market yourself

Danielle, search for "marketing" on the boards and you will find a ton of stuff. I will warn you though, selling art is a slow game that takes years to become well-established. You have an awful lot of experienced competition.

To garner fame as a photographer, your best bet is to come up with an intriguing subject matter to explore. Create a series and body of work around that subject/topic. Create enough for a book and touring exhibit.

For example Cindy Sherman - self-portraits and the role of women in society, Sally Mann - childhood, death, etc.

Check out this list of 50 of the most influential photographers:
http://www.complex.com/style/2013/06/the-most-influential-photographers/47-katy-grannan

Fame is not based on having the best camera or even selling. It is based on having the best ideas.

1. if you want to be taken seriously, take off the hat, and get out of bed, and stand in the avatar, being right side up is the first step.
2. it will be VERY VERY hard to be a famous photographer, i have no idea what you would have to do to get that way, you would have to know a guy....
3. a pro camera will only take pro pictures in the hands of a pro. it won't make you into a pro, it only extends your abilities. you can take pro pictures with any kind of camera.
4.

Art Prints
pictures of blurry smoke, and what looks like an opening, with a random saying, in bright green, no usable keywords or descriptions, and its too small to print, won't help you go very far.

as it stands right now your work is random, or just smoke? how many do you think will be interested in smoke? lay off the text, font choice and colors are crude. and there is a very, very, very tiny audience that wants random quotes on things.

Photography Prints
i would say, go to a local college and learn basic photography skills first. learn how to pose a dog, getting on their level, not using a flash, using an uncluttered background etc. running the same snap shot of a dog and then running it through whatever filters the camera has, isn't the way to go either.

i would change the bio to reflect what you shoot, not your aspirations. to really be famous one day, you have to practice for many many years. you won't get discovered by anyone, other then to tell you your current status, which is me. i'm not sure what your asking here, which is why i'm not critiquing the rest, because i think that's what your asking. maybe i'm wrong.

in any case, if your not advertising, your never going to be seen at all, 76 views in 2 weeks is very low.

I see sunsets, smoke, night scenes and dogs.

Sunsets have been done to death. I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of truly memorable sunset pictures I've seen over the years.

Smoke could be interesting, but I'm not seeing any interesting ones in your group, sorry. Less is more here, the contrast between positive and negative space. Learn to play up the negative space.

Night scenes: This is an area where you might be able to sell here. Pay close attention to framing and your borders.

Dogs: Too personal for you and not interesting enough for anyone else. I group dogs and cats along with sunsets, they have been done to death.

I think you have potential. Need to refine your vision. The old saying that you need 10,000 hr. of practice before you become really good at something holds. Let's see what you're doing after those 10,000 hr.

and don't enlarge the smoke or try to cut it out, the one i clicked on, won't print because you enlarged it 5 times. its too soft to print.

The first thing I read in your post is "I want to be (famous one day, either in photography or whatever it is") That part sounds like your its anything that might make you famous, not really photography. Nothing wrong with that, but I only critique other that know photography is there passion.

Chuck De La Rosa

I don't think you are wasting your time, you do have some decent shots. But to Kevin's point, do you have a passion for it? It's not just about making money.

My mom and dad always told me I have some sort of angle in my photos and I need to do something with this talent,

Not a bad motivator to get started. But our relatives and friends can blind us by being overly encouraging with their biased eye, so I'm glad to see you are asking folks for help. As far as being famous and "being discovered", photography is a long journey. The only way to get there is to do it full time. If you are planning this is a full time gig you won't make much money for a long time.

Change your biography. Talk about why you have a passion for photography. Make it professional like you know what you are doing, even if you don't really feel you do yet. Saying "I'm looking to be famous one day with my different styles and different views of photography. " or "My mom and dad always told me I have some sort of angle in my photos and I need to do something with this talent, so here I am trying to be famous!!!!! " sounds amateurish.

Bill Posner

I'd be happy to sit and give some of your shots a real critique, in private of course not in open forum.
However if your motivation is to be famous in the world of photography, it will a very long a bumpy road. What kind of famous? Photographer of the stars? Pulitzer Prize famous? News Journalist famous? I'd start for being recognized for top notch work first, this takes study and practice. there is an old saying, that I'm bouncing off what Mike said, "It's not the wand, it's the magician" I've seen photographers simply blow me away with a out dated iPhone. I've seen shots from a $2000 DSLR that looks like a snapshot.
Before investing in an expensive full frame camera work on Composition, get clear precise shots. Learn your post processing software Understand the difference between Hue, Saturation and Luminance. Practice shooting with no camera, visualizing shots all the time, learn how to see the finished shot in your mind before you even push the shutter. Photography is science and art, there are many basics rules you have to learn, before you can break them :)

Now, as said elsewhere in this topic you are NOT wasting your time, You have a good foundation to start with. There some things that need work, but your only path is up, to get better and this takes lots of practice and studying other photographers blogs, and tips. there is so much free stuff out there now to can teach you to be a better photographer, as well as the old fashioned books ;) One other you may want to check out is Scott Kelby and Bryan Petersen, Both write easy to understand books through all the technical stuff but have a good sense of humor too. There is no quick easy path we know, or there wouldn't be anyone here ;) Best of luck, and keep doing it!!

Welcome Danielle.

What everyone else said.

There is no secret formula that will make you famous or we all would be.

But as I see it there are three prerequisites (that still offer no guarantee) #1 you must be passionate about your craft #2 you must excel at it, and #3 you have to be willing to put in the time.

Floyd Snyder

If you want to be known and famous as a photographer, spend as much time learning burliness, with an emphais on marketing and advertising, as you do about learning about photography. And in every thing you do, do it to a high level of professionalism.

IMHO, telling people you want to be famous is pretty amateurish.... and so is the avatar.... sorry.

Seek out a local pro that can help you with your "credential" like your avatar, your bio and other things you can build a lasting, positive identity one.

AJ Yoder

Here is my opinion, for what its worth.

I LOVE the night scenes. I personally cannot do them, mine always come out all blurry. I need a lot of practice with those. But you do have an eye for the city.

The sunsets are a dime a dozen, I do like yours, but I like all sunsets. The goal is trying to find something in a sunset that no one else has done. If you google sunsets, you will see thousands of photos with sunsets.

What I did like about yours is the city sunset, I would try to figure out a way to highlight the city more, most sunset photos are done on the beach. I personally have a lot of them, but dont post them, though the are nice, you couldnt tell mine apart then anyone elses.

But with the city backdrop, I would try to bring in the city more. Not sure if it will work, but worth a shot.

I like the smoke, but I would put some different eery color in it. They are all black and white. I would NOT add words to the smoke though. It takes away from the whole image. Plus, not sure what the image has to do with the words. I like the quote you used on intellegence, not sure if you made it up or not, but if you didnt, you didnt add the originals author name on it. Plus, make sure its okay to use it. Id worry about getting sued. I dont fully understand copyright stuff, so I would just be safe and really look into quotes. You can always change the wording around if you are not sure.

As for Brooklyn. I LOVE brooklyn, but I wouldnt buy it because its clear its a family pet. I would get rid of the background and then maybe put in some textures, I did a few that you can look at. Also, I think Brooklyn has the greatest expression, so I would come up with some funny sayings and add them to the bottom of the image, not across it.

The one with Brooklyn's teeth showing, you can come up with a million funny sayings like "look, no cavities" A dog groomer can hand it and maybe even a dentist.

Last but not least. Being famous. If you want to be famous, maybe try acting or singing, sorry, but being a photographer, you really need to figure out a way that your photos are something that no one else has seen before.

For your about page, I hope you dont mind, but its a no go.

"I'm looking to be famous one day with my different styles and different views of photography. I see photography being an art that can be felt and seen and heard........I want you to feel my pictures in some way I can not explain. My mom and dad always told me I have some sort of angle in my photos and I need to do something with this talent, so here I am trying to be famous!!!!! And my bestfriend, Brooklyn, the boxer in a lot of my photos, will be a star too!!!!! Help Me Out......if you can in some way! =)"

The only thing I can see as workable is the words below:

different styles and different views of photography. I see photography being an art that can be felt and seen and heard........I want you to feel my pictures in some way I can not explain.

Being famous, my parents told me, my dog brooklyn......I would take it all out.

I can see the talent, and I know your end goal is to be famous, but for now, I would just work on your craft and dont worry about being famous or not. Just enjoy it.

Oh, you need to write decriptions and try to come up with more keywords. Its the hardest part for me, but if you dont take the time to do it, then its almost impossible to sell something.

You can have the best photo in the world, but if people cant find you, then no one will see it.

But again, Im pretty new to this whole photography thing too, and Im constantly learning and I learned alot from the artists here. I am my own work in progress. As my mom always said, "take what you want and leave the rest".

So pick and choose what you think will help you, and if some advice doesnt seem to work for you, then just move on.

As for your avatar, I personally dont take a lot of stock in avatars. Some people do, some dont. I was told to change mine also. I didnt. On some other sites, I use my dog photo as my avatar. But here, I am involved in the community, so I added a selfie. I might change it to my dog avatar to keep it consistant.

But hey, I dont know much, its all just my opinion. I would love to see more night city photos. I LOVE them.

Danielle, you're in Vegas. Ask around and find out who the five best local photographers are. Contact them; open dialogs with them. One or two will be happy to speak with you. Can you apprentice with them? If so, it's a great way to learn the ins and outs of photography *and* the photography business.

In addition to schlepping equipment, you'll meet people, learn how assignments are secured, understand work flow and see the difference between *good* clients and *bad* clients. You'll learn editing, digital processing and how to prepare files for various media.

You (and others) may discover that your talents are more suitable in front of the camera. Many famous people launched their careers that way. The most important step is to get in the game.

ideally a print on demand won't make anyone famous. it just makes things easier to sell.

night shots in vegas -- you can actually do with any camera. it was incredibly bright, all mine were hand held at iso 400. you could read a newspaper at midnight there. but you still need to make sure they don't have motion blur.

i'd practice as much as you can with the cheap camera and learn how to use the functions it has. a more pro camera, has a lot more features and it can be really daunting to learn how to use it. first find out if you have the passion, really have the talent, etc, before investing hundreds or even thousands on a new camera and lens. you might found out a year or two from now that you hate it with a passion, and now you don't have money for that new car. the only real advantages a pro camera has to a pocket - is clarity, lens choice, iso and focus. and it can make a big difference. but only if you know how to use it.

so if your still in school and your choosing a college, i suggest you get into:

photography 101
editing 101
business 101

do that for a start. if they require you to get an slr, choose something that's at the low end until you get into it. learn basic composing, and learn how to edit. when i saw your avatar on its side, i knew right away you were a beginner. there is a lot of stuff to learn. parents will always encourage. its when they hand you money or your friends toss money at you, then your ready. that's my feeling on it.

Yes sunsets and dogs are a dime a dozen, but contrary to what is stated above I have seen MANY (great) sunset and dog pictures on the "Recently Sold" page that you can get to when you first sign on (link on the Yoga Mats page that temporarily loads first). Also, the "Recent Sales" page will help you...you may want to look at that page often to see what sells. https://fineartamerica.com/recentprintsales.html

Michael Hoard

Danielle, welcome to Fine Art America, my personal perspective as you mention it is obvious your parents including myself can see you do have a natural untrained ability and your perception of the world which surrounds you. Continue to challenge your visions and dreams, certain individuals did not go to school and get a degree as some do for further education. I do recall reading books about techniques at an early age at the library and the technical aspects of photography some I used some I did not I always new I was an exception and their is nothing wrong with having insight of this. . What you are doing at the present is reaching out and getting our feedback. Keep in mind at a site such as a POD competition is quite fierce but that potential is always remains for an initial sale or sales!!!

As far as the fame and notoriety it does come eventually because of circumstances and connections. To become famous takes for some a lifetime and then you have the individual overnight success in a matter of a short period of time. I have always shared with everyone here at Fine Art America and have always since a child prodigy continued without deviations my dreams and ambitions I have always followed my belief "No goal or dream is beyond reach while achieving success" how much success is left up to the individual in my instance I am an over achiever. Have I achieved famous status not quite but still working on that and with continued efforts I just may achieve famous status

. Have I succeeded as being a successful photographer yes, am I a successful chef yes, am I a successful musician yes, am I a successful actor, yes, am I a successful singer, yes I am, to even think differently is absurd like telling a sculptor oh you used the wrong technique or clay or granite, or tell the glass blower he blew too much air, lol, lol, lol smiling. The exception would be the vocalist who hit the wrong note, no Grammy for them, lol, lol, lol. Nor would anyone question Ansel Adams however, why did you take that photo on Tuesday and not Friday, he new the true meaning of spectrum and perfection.

For many its a hobby others they nurture their interest and become professionals keeping in mind what is your objective, in your instance you are at an early crossroad of curious yet you have high potential. When you look thru the viewfinder what exactly to you think about? My reason for asking if you think to yourself is this a snap shot or a quality image. In your gallery I came across a few which would classify as a quality image. Why? Because you were at that exact moment and capture what I call a one of a kind image, that type of photo any professional dreams of capturing. Art is Art, photography is photography there is no correct or wrong way of technique it is merely individuality and what lies in the eyes or ears of the beholder.

The only example would be if it involved technical technique, for art, photography, master chef, musician, vocalist, acting the performance. What everyone tries to do strive for is perfection and in order to achieve perfection is by trial and error. Be the very best you can possibly be. I wish you the very best of future success and potential sales here at Fine Art America!!! Network with others in your community, photographer society's etc.

You only attain famous status quo when you are recognized by your peers publicly, past, present and into the future of your outstanding achievements regardless what profession. Take claim of your successes and someday you will be rewarded with fame. In my instance at the age of 65 I just might attain notoriety and famous status, the possibilities are endless. "Everything about nothing at all or something to do, is the mere frequency and intensity of an inspiration" just one of my famous quotes by Michael Hoard

Danielle, it was a pleasure to view your gallery These three I would consider superior and masterful accomplishment!!! I consider them Kodak and National Geographic moments of perfection!!! Your photographs above are also the types of photographs which other photographers would be jealous envy, wow, I wish I could have captured that photo. There are no two photographs alike but similar, you were at the right place at the right time and split second timing. There are some in my own gallery, those just the one shot yet some photographers may instances take multiple for safeguards along with the preferable perspectives.

Also keep in mind there was mentioned about equipment it took a little getting use to my transition from 35 mm slr to the digital age of cameras. To capture that one photograph has nothing at all to do with make model of camera its the individual behind the equipment, it can be a throw away film type camera to the least expensive to the over priced camera gear. Photographers such as National Geographic to Life Magazine the consensus did have top of the line equipment.

You have some great arted photos of your dog, the sunsets are competent, and the night-shots lack the vibrancy and vitality of some good post-processing.

If you want to get alongside a great community for arting your photos, try the Topaz Groups on facebook. The Topaz Studio is a great - and free - processing tool to get the best out of your photos. The community there is a great asset when you are setting out on this road.
If you use Photoshop, then join the Photoshop (and Lightroom) Groups on facebook as well.

Identify your strengths as a photographer: street, portraits, black and white; landscape, art shots etc, and then study the best of these genres (or types) of photography, to get a sense of what direction will take you to excel in at least one of these kinds of photography.

You would never congratulate a great hostess - who had cooked you a darn fine meal - by saying that she had a great stove! And so for the photographer: no matter what camera you use - it is the person behind the camera who makes the photo - good or bad!

Free processing tools include the "must have" Nik Collection from Google. Unbelievably, all that processing-power is free.

Digital photography means we can press that shutter again and again and again without fear of the cost of having to develop the photos the old fashioned way. Practice makes perfect. Get out there and shoot - and when the critiques come in - you can stand back and begin to appreciate just where you have been most successful - and where least - and get pointers as to how to continue.

But most of all - have fun! And welcome to this vibrant and active community here at fineartamerica!

Danielle, I appreciate your eye in some of your photographs...good compositions, and good use of the Rule of Thirds. But, using the green box magnifier/loupe, I see you've added black to the background of 'Views Seen Differently'. How do I know this? Because the beautiful wispy edges of your smoke curls have been pretty much ruined. If you dump a paint bucket of black into the background (in Photoshop or another program) it will wreck delicate edges that have color close to the color you're placing.

Also, 'Behind Me' has been enlarged and maybe a filter applied? In any case, lines that are supposed to be straight or smooth are wavy and bumpy. In order to assure a good print, don't enlarge. A filter may disguise some problems, but lines that are supposed to be smooth seem to still jump out as wavy and bumpy. That's what enlarging does...it enlarges by increasing the size of the pixel. A pixel is box-shaped. Bigger pixel-boxes become more noticeable to the eye...you're seeing the corners of the pixels making a straight line look like stair steps. Applying a filter may round off those edges, but now the line is wavy/bumpy.

So, check your images at 100%... make sure any filter applied hasn't just compounded problems that are already there. You have to ask yourself, 'what will my image look like printed 16x20...20x24? Starting with only 1000 pixels on one side will not give you enough pixel info to print large. The image may look great on a greeting card, but not as a large print size. Just things to keep in mind, and said to be helpful, not to disrespect you or your work in any way :)

Hello Collins, you did not specify know of in general or know in person? I would have to disagree what you say if you did ask someone on the street to name 5 actors, musicians they would be able to name 5 actors, and 5 musicians, even a 1st grader would have that answer in the blink of an eye, but ask them to name 5 photographers more than like they would not have an answer, in my own opinion.

I would have to think every city has a prominent photographer known in their communities and achieved some type of world wide recognition.....

the only real step next is to critique the few photos you have. and most are smoke. so maybe you can shoot new stuff, and then ask for a critique, be open for learning during that. there isn't too much more that hasn't already been covered.

generally people don't start selling as soon as they come here. and it will take a VERY long time to earn enough for a pro camera (most better ones start at around $800). best to learn with what you have, or buy something used, and even they are expensive.

so go out and shoot another say, 200 images, edit 20 of the best, and upload those, and then we would take it from there.

as a general rule, i don't follow anyone. i experimented with my mother's account to see if she would get sales from that link, and she never did as far as we know. i don't like getting constant updates from people commenting, uploading etc. i only have people follow me if they want.

Danielle,

I'd be happy to follow you.

I think in the long run you will have SOME success. Only you can decide how much.

Danielle, learn from us photographers here by studying images we shoot. I would postpone wanting to be famous, theirs millions of photographers out there like us.

I'm in the right thread, and apparently I'm the only one who read it.

LMAO Sorry Susan. When I read that I was thinking, "WHO IN THE WORLD IS KIM K.?" LOL Now I understand. Thanks for repeating that. I just skipped over it after I saw it I guess. . . =)

Btw I agree with the "con" part about that though. Lol she did it/does it, and gets away with it ......possibly because of her selfies. Haha
