Hi Ken,
I really like the way this image is worked. The trees form a nice frame around the obelisk (I don't think this would have worked with foliage), supported by the cloud which draws your eye into the obelisk.

Saturation and exposure/contrast are spot on, and refreshing in a world where over-saturated/punchy images seem to be the norm. I also like the inclusion of the post to the lower right as not only does this element provide balance.but begins a lead-in from post-shrub-obelisk.

I was wondering about cropping as the obelisk is so central and the story for me is the balance between obelisk and post. In this case I don't think that cropping would help (other than a tad off the top?). I would have like to see the shot panned right a touch to create space between the post and the edge of the frame and to decentralize the obelisk but I understand that this may not have been an option.

Overall a wonderful image, thanks for posting for critique. I'd love to hear what others think, and perhaps your own analysis/story of how the picture was taken once the critique process is completed.

Thanks for the critique! I was very tempted to give you my full answer to your comments now because you raise some interesting points (composition, color and contrast, positioning, use of lead in...) -- but I think you are right, and I should wait until others here have commented before I do this.

So be patient, but know that I value everything you said - I find you have very thoughtful critiques in a classical style (and this clearly brings a lot to your excellent work)

Ken,

Very good image!

What I like the most is the balance between man-made objects and nature objects in the image. Man-made objects (obelisk and post) form a diagonal while trees form an internal frame. Those two different geometric forms made from totally different objects are somehow in balance. If you will crop or move the obelisk from where it is - then the diagonal with man-made objects would be disturbed and that could impact the whole balance.

Ken, this is a fantastic image. The composition, the light and the theme. I can honestly not think of what I would change in this. I find this image to be very good the way it is!
