What Is Your Style? Are You A High Or Low-key Image Person?

Most of the time I am drawn to darker low-key images. I have noticed that others prefer the high-key pastel like images. What does this say about us?

I think I ten to prefer mid to high, though I have some BW photographs (not currently uploaded) and charcoal drawings that are low key. What that says about me, I have no idea.

I am definitely more darker key. I prefer a rich, deeper, moody/warmer type images. But every so often I do love to do a high-key image depending on the subject matter and how I feel at the particular time.

Jessica, I have admired your work for years. I can define it with one word: Elegance.

Looking over some of my work - I've no clue what key it's in - kind of like music to me - unless you tell me what key it's in - I don't know and even though I can read notes in music - the keys elude me.

I had to look it up. I did not know what low or high key was.

In painting terms many of my pieces are chiaroscuro style, like maybe a Rembrandt or Caravaggio. That is most definitely low key.

Jessica Jenney

Yes, David, that is low key, but I can't see any of your images on the images page.

Jessica, click on his name under the avatar and then there are three collections - he doesn't have an image - just the FAA watersplat logo - but if you click on those - you can see his images.

I'm all over the place. I love looking at all kinds of work and attempt creating all kinds too.

Jessica, look in my public collection. There are images there. My images tab does not show anything because all my images are private. Only on the public collection do the thumbnails show up.

Key? I usually play songs I can sing in the key of D or maybe A - best for my (very limited) vocal range. My photography, however, has examples of both low and high key - so that must say something about me being indecisive - or maybe something more sinister. :)

I think my art for the most part is almost square in the middle of the two, I like to use a lot of contrast and try to use a full tonal range. I do have some images that are on the low key end of things though.

My personal taste is low key, very sedate and old fashioned, but I think people prefer high key, or highly saturated images or the total other end of the spectrum, pastel shades.

I do law key, even when I envision a high key photo it ends up low key.

That said I think, from my own experience Georgiana must be right!

I choose whatever key seems to suit the expression. No consistency in choice of key.

I wouldn't know how to do high key, but you've given me an idea of something to learn and work on. I am drawn to deep, rich colors and chiaroscuro (man, that is not easy to spell). We had a chiaroscuro group here that was rather nice, but I'm not sure if it is active any longer.

i'm pretty much at the darker - richer - dramatic side (low key)

I like your avatar, Jessica. It fits with what Dan said. Elegance.

I gravitate to the low key images overall and every once in a while, I throw in a high key image when the situation is there.

And Jessica, I also think your new avatar is great and it suits your style.

Kevin OCONNELL

More low key, dramatic. Have also used the other depending what I may have seen at a certain time.

Much more low key. When I think of high key, I think of those bright and cheery stock photos of everyone smiling in a brightly lit kitchen.

Photography Prints

When I think of low key, I think of the extreme - dark background, lots of shadows, highlights but not much mid tones.

I think there's more mystery and mood in low key images. Probably why I'm drawn to it.

David Randall

I think in most respects I tend to be higher key although I temper it in some works more than others. I do tend to go there more readily than others.

I'm mostly low key, most of the building I paint are no longer standing. I;m painting a real depressing one now, I don't have a style, I go from low to high , it helps me keep painting everyday.

Being a Libra, I need balance; after a few dark and sombre pictures, I MUST go bright and colorful!
It's my way of dealing with things, I guess.

Mike Savad

i go either way depending on the image. a lot my darker things sell well. but then again the light ones sell well as well. i try to go for a moody look, which i guess tends itself to being darker.

I don't know, I just hope I never think in terms of I'm creating a low key or high key artwork,I don't ever want to be locked into a style, I personally find it limiting for me to think in those terms..

i'm a Loki kind of person (ducks). What Peggy said. One of the joys of photography is the options you have.

I'm a neon-color personality - I adore bright &super-bright colors. Because I love this life and enjoy it. But in art I like to play with styles, mix them, use all colors and contrast combinations. Too-dark, then super-bright, then can come something monochrome/colorless... For me, life is a big holiday. So it is cool to play with colors.... Some people hate me because of my opinion on life. I don't care what they say.

Sofia, I can see that about you, very cool.

My style is messy...is that a style?

So "dark key" is why all your works looks so crappy huh? lol.
I guess I am a "crappy artist" too then, haha.
I think that people like us see the importance of "dark key" in the quest for DEPTH.
It is what the best artists strive for. Almost all the Masters seemed to be "dark key".
But on occasion, a subject might call for a "light key" approach, but not too often for me.

I just did a "dark key" this morning.

My next piece will be a slightly higher key than my last one. Everything is relative.
