Spirituality Through Art

Hey guys

Id luuurv to hear some veiws on the spiritual connection with art ( if you have any). Ive scratched around like a chicken with pencils for years but till i decided to try pursue it a few months ago im learning theres a much deeper learning that takes place alongside art learning. Or is it just me? :p i try invoke whatever suits my fancy at the time but theres always some sort of other presence or life perspective that strolls in unannounced. Id like to learn how to chanel some vibes. Or just hear what your art does for you :p besides empty your bank account and annoy your significant others. my guy jesus does things for me but im also friends with a whole lot of other things im trying to put on canvas

Jean I would imagine there are many artist who think as you do. The only thing is since religion is not a topic allowed on these threads you need to walk carefully on this topic.

oh snap alright. Let me specify i wasnt referring to religion per se. More an intangible other essence im sure most feel in some way. Like tap into . One can be religiously fervent but religious debate tends to go pearshaped. So to be clear a more joyful side of whatever you feel?

I often feel a deeper connection to my subjects as I paint or draw them and in some cases to myself, I don't know if that would be considered a spiritual thing or not.

Marlene Burns

I have a series of 24 paintings based on blessings, prayers, proverbs, psalms, etc...I don't do anything to get in the mood...what I am connected to spiritually dictates what I paint each morning.
You can see the series here with accompanying texts that explain them from an educator's and artist's point of view:

I don't really feel a "spiritual connection" to most of my works, but I do sometimes pray for guidance to work on things that God would want me to do at that time....especially on Sundays....

Jean,

This work might be a reflection spiritually on any man's life.

As might this one about stained glass.....

These are meant as my expression of spirituality.

Yes, I have had help from spirit guides on many paintings and numerous experiences covering decades, but I thought we weren't supposed to discuss it here.

It is different in some ways, but since I am rather new here, I would not want to get into trouble and be banned.
The original post has an image that looks like a specific belief, to me. I have adopted several belief systems, I suppose I am ecumenical.

I think I'd describe my joy more as an endorphin rush. Coming across a Model T parked in front of an old vintage barn - heaven on earth. No mysterious forces at work, simply unexpected excitement.

In the most basic definition of spirituality it means to be focused on the non-physical. I'm not sure how you reconcile that with the act of making art which is usually a physical act. Personally I find the concept of spirituality to be rather amorphous, basically impossible to define with words but you know it when you feel it.

Yes, I agree, Ed. Or in this case an old country store. :-)

FYI Floyd, that's a Model A, not a Model T.

Jean, a most interesting topic to be sure; its sheer ambiguity, and difficulty to set into words, seems to unnerve the best of us. But it is present, we 'feel' or 'intuit' something - call it 'other' or as I prefer 'other-ness' laced with a dose of 'what-else-ness' and subject to 'what might yet become visible'.

It is that 'become visible' (the potential) that intrigues my pen, brush and questioning mind. Is this sounding like what you are talking about? There are so many directions to approach the subject; I have come to the point that the images seem to reflect a 'core' - the core has a similarity to 'gravity' - but the purposiveness remains mysterious. Yet even in its mystery it - in a way - shuttles me along a pathway of imagination, intuition and artifacts of prior thought ( my own and historically).

One place it recently led was to Henry Corbin's investigations - so I refer it to you: 'Mundus Imaginalis' (or The Imaginary and the Imaginal)... It is easily accessed on the net; you may find it interesting.

I prefer to use the following 2 definitions for "SPIRIT" the root for "Spirituality"

#:1... an animating or vital principle held to give life to physical organisms

and

#.3... temper or disposition of mind or outlook especially when vigorous or animated in high spirits

sorry guys, love the participation but am moving a different mountain right now. But if you wanna see the importance of my naive seeming curiosity, im tryna be Mandela 2.0. wow thanks TdpArts Gallery Terrance DePietro thats a really good point i never looked at. The REAL big questions are rather ambiguous and unnerving to us all i think but art is a pretty compatible medium ( i mean mediator) not materials , to do so. the above link is some nobody white kid in South Africa tryna answer huge questions too. Sounds retarded. But hey . Art makes me insanely dedicated and art teaches me and can teach others

I ask sincerely as im quite far down the rabbit hole and "these entities" seem to be whatever im arting / crusading. scary to ask if im hearing real things or if im going a tad van gogh. I know some really tormented artists who share some similarities and it doesnt seem to bad if its channeled with good intention. Have yall heard Nelson mandelas voice? :PPP i am

A persistent darkness lives and thrives inside and out of each one of us and, of course, we love to deny it, don't we?

I know I do. I want to follow butterflies in nature with a net, and not catch a single one, but I'll have to settle for painting the butterflies and catching all of them.

I'm glad I could share an image or two on this thread, but I took them away as this is not an image thread. Thanks Abbie for clarifying.

Jean, you get it...;art as image - the objectification of the creative explorer's activity - is a 'buffer'; therein serving a purpose other than its seeming surround of aesthetic enjoyment, etc.

These days, I find myself marking the experience in as many words as images; but the images are more talkative than I have time to put into words - a thousand words per image is merely a starting point, lol.

I believe that spirituality through art is very important, in that spirituality extends beyond an expression of religion or practice of religion. There is a pursuit for a spiritual dimension that not only inspires, but creates harmony with the universe. That relationship between ourselves and something greater compels us to seek answers about the infinite. This can be illustrated through our artwork, through strong composition and storytelling, with symbolism. In other words, religion is the movement or dogma of a particular faith, where spirituality is what moves us outside of our selves. Our artwork may not always be picked up by the viewer as being spiritual, but we as the artist tap into this as the basis for our artwork.

For example, many people do not know that Andy Warhol was a devout celibate Catholic. He gained spirituality through his faith as a basis for his artwork, and used it to speak to society and even creating his own culture through his art, but most did not pick this up through viewing his art ... see the article at the links:

"When religion, science and morality are shaken … and when the outer supports threaten to fall, man turns his gaze from externals in on to himself. Literature, music and art are the first and most sensitive spheres in which this spiritual revolution makes itself felt. They reflect the dark picture of the present time and show the importance of what at first was only a little point of light noticed by few and for the great majority non-existent. Perhaps they even grow dark in their turn, but on the other hand they turn away from the soulless life of the present towards those substances and ideas which give free scope to the non-material strivings of the soul." ~ Wassily Kandinsky

I have actually noticed that I get more social media traction on Instagram (@thephotocottage) with my faith based typography work than my other posts. At first, I was afraid of coming off as a crazy Christian, so I tried to keep them to under 25% of my posts - until I figured out that they are appreciated.
On FAA, I do have a gallery called Religious, and it includes a couple non-Christian places of worship in addition to a bunch of quotes inspired by my faith that cross over into everyday advise for living right: Love your neighbor, Hug your hater, Let your light shine, etc.

Lol crazy christian... i went to a funeral today of a close friend. Pastor was gangster geez but very good. Said in a more pretty way screw christianity screw religion etc ( cos of that facetious label i assume) . Ots about a spiritual relationship. And being a good person. This fake hashtag society labels blindly . Share your passion step on the haters. My insta account is as slow as everything else . The only option to " go viral" is if you pay out ur bumbum to people punting "love of art etc " meantime its scam crap just to make money . Sorry . Venting. Throw ur fire nancy anyone hating on passion and love and spirit is just empty vessels. Armchair critics .

I have a friend who went through a spiritual crisis of an eastern flavor. He and I had many many discussions during this time.

In our many discussions about many things, we discussed meditation. One of the goals of meditation, he told me, is to empty your mind, to shut down the chatter in our brains. He said that many people strive for this and, in fact, travel to world seeking gurus to achieve this state. For many, that is their end goal, to find peace.

I told him that my mind is naturally quiet. It is easy for me to shut off the chatter of my mind. He called me naturally spiritual. I, as a non-believer, had a hard time with this. I described the peace in my brain as largely the chemistry of my brain.

Our discussions have always respectful, never judgmental. We have never been angry or rude with each other.

So, I pose the question, what is spirituality? I'm not sure I've ever experienced it. I've been through dark and painful times in my life. I've also experienced peace and joy. None of it do I attribute to a higher power.

Our lives are what they are. For me, there is only here and now, that, and memories of the past. The future does not exist yet. We can steer the boat, but our destination is unknown, except for one thing, one day we will die, and that will be the end. I'm okay with that.

David Bridburg

DLar,

To discuss your question, human beings have been raising each other generation after generation to have a feeling within, their beliefs of good. It can be called grace. Finding that is spirituality. Using the principles of spirituality leads to the common core beliefs of every religion. Religious law or principles that all faiths have in common. I see them as principles, but more ardent believers would see them as laws.

It doesn't have to be something you can attribute to a higher power in order to be spiritual.

Good thread Jean,

Any artist who thinks and looks eventually hit politics and religion.

Any artist who is introspective will hit spirituality. Kandinsky is a good start.

Thank you all for tryna get my rambles. i feel inclined to share part of one i just belted out to a fellow struggling south african artist. im no artist yet but i try . and i try help my breed. i trust you all seem deep enough to try . i tried censoring and in commas is explanation as its all about context. NB i use big words. Like margarine and wheelbarrow .. But im on a mission. and im late. Toss grammar naziism to the side for a moment cos theres another hashtag that makes people judge not listen. Plus its my generations language. Learn it. It will be your bread and butter and future consumers.

Its brazen and raw but mr jesus is working his ass off to help me turn to words and turn it into art.... We need another renaissance . If you cant deal just hashtag me a van gogh and move along. enjoy...... find your god in mine. Thanks for the socks Joe. yet i have a mountain to climb. Help me find boots... p.s his artist name is wit pikswart. Afrikaans for white pitchblack . Light into my darkness in hindsight.

Hi there, yeah, I have some pics of days gone past, but it did no good then and I don't think people really care whether I enabled kids to do art or not.

And rightly so, it should not be counted as an achievement to help youngsters in any case.

Take your time, do your thing, I have no expectations.

Have a good one

to WP

its part of my own thing. Whether they would care or not its an advantageous addition to ones image. Sharing the gift. Do you have children? i dont but i once did a kids helpmekaar thing and a random photo got posted and it broke backs in terms of coverage compared to my art.

"And rightly so, it should not be counted as an achievement to help youngsters in any case." im not sure what direction this is at but i assume good heartedly it means you beleive kids should be helped anyway? remember we live in a world that doesnt feed a hobo without posting it. And like good sentiment on social media kak while a homeless kid dies on the sidewalk next to us. these hoomens hide daggers in smiles and are horribly arrogant. especially the emerging young middle class. you will get hashtagged as artist tryna sell yourself and as everyones tryna sell themselves subconsciously you will be a number. Show you do the "insanely dificult " things like just help people and whether its empty following or not, its following. more eyes equals more possibilities.

by default i help people too much its a beautiful curse but some knobhead in the sky convinced me ill get my returns. Art isnt exactly my finest point yet but im kak good at arting menses brains. Humility, understanding and willingness to do crazy s#$* noone wants to do lets me tear out their eyes (learn) through failure or success. Cant go wrong with kids. like puppies. average joe narrowminded struggle veteran sheep cannot fathom art ive given up tryna teach them that . We have a default defensive victim status society nowadays. You either have to go the spear way and paint zumas d%#k, catch fire and run ( a contemporary SA artwork that was contraversial). Or the more tedious way of helpmekaar. Im far better at the controversial hype way but when last did you hear about oscar ( the white paralympian that shot his lover)? hype is fast but its short lived.

would luuurv to hear your veiws

you dont have to BE anything nowadays to spark virality you just have to LOOK like you have half a clue. f&%$ing tweens on youtube going viral cos of a half a^$ed opinion thats kak dof (ill though out) but controversial while we struggle. Hai. Our artist smarts should pick this up . My biggest problem was all talk . But now im making sure when i get the eyes i oh so easily get , my art speaks art

to me

Yeah, we live in an instant gratification, here now, gone in an instant world (if we choose to) "takeaway art" by anybody who can work photoshop, and the attention span of a goldfish.

When taking into account that every person we meet is a reflection of us, I now know that I smuggled my own mind in my twenties, till about my middle thirties. Subsequently, my attention turned inwards, as reflections often distort reality, like when the mirror is flawed.

A well-made oil painting can last for 100's of years. There were many, many awesome painters, peers of today's "masters" who disappeared into obscurity because their works faded or rotted away after a few years.

I am practicing patience, no hurry, no worry. Deadlines are for rats in a maze.

Making a difference in another's life is mandatory for every human. Hashtagging or sharing it dilutes the effort and turns it into a self-aggrandisement.
Let art speak for art and if it is any good, it won't have to shout it out on social media, people will talk about it in realtime.

Never underestimate the importance of "The Man" whithout whom we would all be subsistence farmers. Without the incredible disparity between the rich, who buy art and the poor, often depicted in art, we would not have the luxury of being artists. Just being an artist is already a success story.

Your enthusiasm is contagious, carry on carrying on! Dala what you must.

lol kudos :p one of my million artwork ideas. But i see macro. Takeaway love . or whatever. teens craving marriage but fail. big flash weddings . jealousy and hate and fakeness. people craving wealth but get free jobs and fail. south africa craving peace and no racism but jump and fail etc.Its drugs man.
Hating a photoshopper cos we struggle is not right. they're artists in a tech age

adaptation. Its evolution. The monkey with more bananas one day will beat the big ape with all the women monkeys. Highlight your foes . highlight yourself . contrast. fight mekaar en almal eet kak. ( fight eachother and we all suffer)

Thanks i needed that. im an instant gratification lightie ( youngster) by default. Ran through life and hit walls like drugs etc. Mr jesus is my worst drug. Also went inward but its INSANELY difficult to knock on peoples doors cos they're all inwards. Noone teaches us to see in colors. Its all ipads and facetious avatars. and by colors i dont mean art alone. I saw " THE MAN" , stepped on his toes, kicked his nuts , PK'd him while he was crouched in pain and saw another man behind him. ( choose your chains, capitalism aint a boogeyman if people learnt up and stopped complaining) Call it jesus but i hashtag it jesus only cos i see purpose in everything now. Im an idiot savant.

"THE MAN complex is retarded victim status self oppression( .Pharaoh was "the man". dark age kings were "the man" . Slavery was "the man" . apartheid was "the man" ) We need the man to move forward but hashtag and idolize it and act like its over and the real "Man" behind the scenes gonna rain some struggle. We're all slaves. every one of us." "Oh em gee i cant sell art" no people get "art" less in this age. Is art only the old definition? maybe. "oh em gee davinci was great " ye he was but he too was an oppressed knobhead who hated his contemporary facebook and idea of religion. his pictures said he lurved curvy women though. And machines . And hell of alot of things. Mona lisa quite lelik (ugly) if people cannot get taught art is life, spirit, curiosity, growth. not pictures. " why cant i get job" why cant you get off your a%$ and atleast acknowledge you have no skills nevermind learn nevermind look for a job nevermind steal a job and fK&# up a country.( bear in mind we have a new apartheid going on and it has nothing to do with that facetious thing called racism but its hashtagged racism cos people see in black and white *cough merica slavery is over but yall to have some race drama . ) the whole world has their own struggle they refuse to be real about and put in a box and shutup and grow. HAHAHA DALA what you must . DALI is what i must. Byt vas ( hold tight) pikkies this brain needs nothing else but patience and that man will look like a mosquito

P.S my only tangible qualifications are in macro economics and marketing so take what i say with a tonne of salt. I get people cos im into psychology and philosophy . Freud and neitzshe, ed bernays etc arted me to get society as a whole .Gotta understand hoomens can be finnicky sometimes to understand groups of hoomens. Current world apartheid : a whole lotta money but no value.species and people dropping like flies. Blamed on racisms and isms on isms and nukes on communisms cos your ism is not my ism genderism im a vagina bearing male tree but only like to be called an indigeonous born free cicad . I wanna hug a polar bear. Itll kill me but so will humanity. tech recolution after depression after industrial revolution and depression and mechanization. After my french guys Renaissance. after 1500 years of kak. after classical beauty. after cavemen. after monkeys.

yere mense hate change but kakeet ( eat poop) and subsequent renaissance as a macro idea is literally THE ONLY HISTORY WE NEED TO ACCEPT and refuse to learn. But i have hashtag teens belting out history we dont learn we will suffer. LOOOL. quess whos favorite dingeses (things) was a teleportation device for every chop hoomen to go forward??? ART :P cavemen with hands on caves to tweens with cameltoes on instagram. gooi millies en leer ( throw corn :p / work hard and learn)

THATS what my god shows me. Hes fast, rugged as hell, gangster af. hates empty sentiment. spits on bible bashers who cause crap. (lol, them god puppets with go home homos signs ) as well as ignorance . There was a time when slavery was punted as gods way too. and dark ages lol. cos they know not what the do.Luuurvs budha as his a tad more chilled. frowns at the angry dessert jesus beleivers (alah) but groans at his own hoomens for nukes not love. amongst every other idiot who know not. Like me. But hell i have fire. I wanna change the world but will be happy if some hoomen buys a farking painting. Cos i like pretty pictures. And they get not what i say.

but yes pikkies ill try punt you in my crusade. We need artists to teach people art is not pictures cos art is life and god and buddah and thor and the bible and burning bushes etc. Its all art. If they cant get religious hashtag . make it human. The toothpaste you choose is art. the car you choose is art. the funeral plan you choose is art. the vloekheid ( swearing) you may or may not throw after this rant is art. Some queer stoner artist named shakespear helped people find nice words too. ill bedaar now :) thanks for helping me word some mystery. goieie dag

For me, I use my art photography to connect me to God and I like to connect others to God through scripture, prayers and meditation in my art photography. My goal is to share what I have created in hopes that others will see God's beautiful nature, sunsets and silhouettes and give Him glory. My tag-line is; The beauty of the earth is God's creation calling us into a deeper relationship with Him and my accounts on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook are Art4TheGlryOfGod, because I want it to be All for His Glory...

I have recently signed up for a weekly Devotional on Called To Create - http://www.calledtocreate.org/devotional/ and I absolutely LOVE them. Each week they remind me why I do what I do. I hope this helps in your journey and creativity.
