Pinterest Changes?

I frequently check my art on Pinterest to see if they are on boards that are questionable such as 'paint and sip class', 'to paint' etc. You catch my drift. Anyhow, just now I went there to check out a few pins that are very popular and noticed a big change. You can no longer click on the number of pinned places and see where your work is pinned. Am I missing something or has anyone else noticed?

Phyllis,

I see what you mean.

I just put it out there on P. I dont follow people back or try to engage them much. But if I was to, I'd be a bit put out by this.

Phyllis, yes that changed. And I hate it.

It seems to be an effort to make the Pinterest Design more minimalist - but these are informations we as artists want to have. Knowing into which boards our pins where saved can be really useful so I really hope they will take that back.

Yes, very annoying and I find myself using Pinterest less and less.

This is very frustrating! The only reason that I ever even opened a pinterest account was to keep track of where and who was pinning my art after finding my work with my name cropped off and another persons signature on my paintings, paint classes using my art, etc...If it remains as it is now, I will remove my art from there period!

I just wrote them with my concerns about this. Lets see if they reply. I told them if it is going to remain this way that I would have to go through and remove all of my art. I also told them that many of my fellow artists were concerned as well.

Think of how much less work this gives them to do.

Phyllis,

These are thumbnails. If someone takes it and even claims it they can not do much to sell with it. Your original is still in your hands. You are still selling it. Pinterest is extremely useful for that exposure. Even me with my prints, anyone taking my thumbnails can not print much from them. I am still the only person selling the prints.

If some goes to the trouble of actually painting birds using your image as a reference, just my take....more power to them. Personally I would want attribution or for them to pay homage, but it is not that big a deal to me.

On the other hand I might send take down notices and I do not register my work for nothing. I would expect to discover them though through a Google image search.

Dave, I think that if you ever found an actual painting of yours with your signature cropped off and another's name there, you would not be a very happy camper! Also, the paint and sip classes using your art that they claim that they painted as teaching material. Those are the ones that concern me. Someone printing out a greeting card size print I am not so concerned about.
Janine, right!

I once found one of my b&w photos on Pinterest. Someone had applied a tint to it, given it their own title, and pinned it without attribution, No I wasn't happy. I've since come to accept the situation and the fact that I can't protect the 900px preview images. I see it's even worse for a painter because your work can be 'copied' to various degrees.

I've read other angry comments about the recent changes to pin reporting. I'd say these changes are similar in intent to what's happened at FB over the years. These companies are trying to change the focus from "users selling to users" to "we sell ad services to businesses". They're taking away the tools that facilitate individual marketing.

Maybe some 3rd party site can get all the pin information via the API and fill that gap for users.

Phyllis,

I agree I would not be a happy camper.

There is a cost to doing business. You can send them a take down notice. You can sell the original they cant.

I have found one of my better ideas mimicked in a poorer way just the other day. The person's company is in the Russian Federation. I can send a take down notice, but I am waiting for other infringements where I can make a legal claim and collect.

Phyllis, yes, this (cropping of the signature / putting on another name or logo) is annoying. Other than filing a DCMA takedown you can report the pin to Pinterest - but be sure to report only this specific one and not all of them otherwise they will remove yours (the original, legit ones) too.

Unfortunately these people are everywhere, I seen them on Facebook, Google+ and Pinterest. One guy with a really large following on G+ used one of my photos and posted it as his own. Of course he had 100x more comments and shares than my post, all stating what a wonderful photographer he is. He just deleted my comments but after reporting this to Google they closed his account. He stole many photos from others too.

Some of my photography related pins are in 'Things to paint' boards but I just let it go. If they don't sell the painting :-) Maybe another person finds my pin in their board and repins it or clicks through.

I did send DMCA's to pinterest when I would find these types of violations. I would regularly check each image as to where it was pinned. That is the whole problem. You can not longer see where it is pinned...

After getting a very generic answer from Pinterest I wrote in the reply;

I am an artist who initially started using pinterest when I began finding my copyrighted art in questionable places. Some even with my signature cropped off and anothers signature it its place. So, I decided to open a page to keep track of where my art is being pinned and having it removed from questionable boards such as 'to paint', 'sip and paint classes' etc... I check on a regular basis as do my fellow artists. I noticed that there is no longer any way to see where my art is being pinned. Is this a glitch or will this be permanent? If it is to remain this way, I will have to go through and remove every piece of my art that is on this site. I am very concerned. Phyllis Beiser

Their answer:

Hi Phyllis,
My name is Élita, I am from Pinterest Expert Team and a fellow pinner.

In an effort to make it easier for you to understand how useful or popular a Pin is, you’ll now see the total number of boards a Pin was saved to across all of Pinterest. Clicking on this information won't show you a preview of the boards either.

- To see the number of saves from your mobile device:
Tap on the Pin for a close up view. Under the Pin, you'll see how many boards that Pin was saved to.

- To see the number of saves on the web:
A number will display at bottom right corner of the Pin next to a pin icon. You can also click on the Pin for a close up view to see this information."

Thank you for your feedback about it - I completely understand how frustrating it can be from your side and I will make sure to pass your comments on.

Have a great day,
Élita

I think that reply just says "yes that's how it is now, sorry". Or am I missing something?

Pinterest is going through some changes. Writing them matters. The coders are working over time is my best guess, because right not the site is barely functional for me and many others.

It is a mess for now. Pinterest will right itself.

Pinterest changed this option but it did not go away completely. You have to check you notifications feed - which is for now too crowd with all the notifications about other pinners but you can find activity on your pins - and you can see the last boards where it has been saved and pinner.
But yes, its quite annoying now (((

I know it looks as if I'm late to this discussion, but I've actually been following.

I agree, very annoying. I hate having to sift through everyone else's saves to favorite recipes and stuff to find the very few re-pins of my work - and I just don't have the time to check through this list daily. I actually never checked with an eye of seeing who might have "borrowed" one of my images (though I would find that interesting, too); I checked because I often found boards I enjoyed and wanted to follow by doing this. Now I miss most of them.

And another change I hate is that when I pin now, I can no longer "see" the image on its board immediately. I used to pin, see it now, and when the image came up on its board, I would edit then and there to add the title, my name, a description, the keywords (or in the case of a personal pin maybe a note to myself as to why I was pinning). Now I have to open another window myself, look for the board, find the image, and edit. VERY annoying.

Oh, and where can I write to voice my concerns?

Like FB, they're removing any capabilities that don't generate revenue. All these great 'social media' opportunities erode over time, as the companies feel increasing investor pressure for profits.

Greg Jackson

I'm about to the point of dumping Pinterest. "User-friendly" has become obsolete there, imo.

Phyllis Beiser

Me too Greg. I just need a few spare hours to go through and get all of my work removed. You will have to send in DMCA's on every image that you have there! :(

Just discovered a workaround for the inital topic of this discussion (Pinterest not showing any more to which boards a pin was saved). I added it to one of my Pinterest discussions but wanted to share it with you here too:

Just add /activity to the end of the URL of any pin you want to see that info again.

Here is an example:

This is just one of my pins, as you can see without any information in which boards it was pinned (saved):
https://www.pinterest.com/pin/426786502171035610/

Now I add /activity at the end of the URL and voila:
https://www.pinterest.com/pin/426786502171035610/activity

Don't know how long this will work but it makes me happy for now :-)
