Planning to Paint

As I improve my skill in this very difficult medium, I'm toying with different styles, learning how paint reacts with water on the page. Since I painted in acrylics for most of my life, the process of painting with watercolor is very different. This page in my sketchbook shows me planning the painting in advance, one of the processes I'm exploring.

The finished painting is featured here, so you will see how some things changed during the creative process. I've learned that even the best laid plans are altered during that process. In my experience, that's the same in painting or in writing.

The subject (or character) takes you where it wants to go.
