Network of Mothers in the Neighborhood

Years ago, I met an elderly man at church, Marcel Long was his name. He has long since past and still very much missed. He told how as a youngster he went to school in a one room school house. This was at a time when rural telephones in Texas did not exist. One day he put a shot gun shell in the wood burning stove in the at school, just to see what would happen. He told how it seemed that the stove piping took an hour to stop falling. He was in big trouble to say the least.

He walked home from school, like every other day, to see his mother waiting, hands on her hips waiting for him. “How had she found out so quickly” he asked himself. It was easy, the network of mothers taking care of the family household!!!

This little example speaks volumes about why we need mother’s at home. The network of mom’s helps to raise not only the family, but also the neighborhood, something we really need today in the neighborhood as we continue, unfortunately, further estranging our child from home, church and the family.
