Murals of The Past

It is been 44 years since my father was hired by the city of Anaheim to work with the youths in the Barrios of Anaheim. Emidgio was at liberty to paint more or less what he desired without the restrictions or overlord of comity. The mural would not only discourage graffiti but give the kids a healthy distraction from the temptation of gang activity. The community fully embraced the large-format paintings that became part of the Hispanic Identity. The result were murals of Mexican American history and cultural pride. During the ’70s was a mural movement was strong with the likes of Judith Baca in Los Angeles. Emigdio was Orange County’s local homegrown artist.

The mural is still here fortunately but in ruin. It is in desperate need or restoration/recreation. The large dramatic mural still has a very interesting weathered texture and a lot of people like to photograph it. It’s a far cry to its colorful splendor and as late as 2015 I lobbied to restore it. However, I would learn the mural has deeper issues than the paint on the surface. The bricks have decayed and there are three sections of the built that were built at different times. We estimate this our dive up the cost if we are to remedy the mural from further decay. If anyone is interested in funding this endeavor please contact me as we have already been granted permission from the building owner and have the blessing from the City. The City is not in a position to take it on as the mural sits on private property.
