Well today I painted on walls, but I prefer to paint on canvas, yes.

Paper is fun too.

I have tried acrylic paper but I actually havent gotten the knack for canvas. I do enjoy wood as a medium. And yep Lisa I have painted walls too lol but I prefer smaller scale.

Prefer canvas [linen specifically] for oils...But I paint in several mediums where paper, rag, is preferable; I never paint in acrylics.

Terrance, I understand your preferance for canvas with oils

I make my own paper and I enjoy painting on that texture, with acrylic. For watercolor, I use a cold press paper. I have plans to paint on canvas, again, with acrylic.

Stretched canvas only....there is no replacement for the feel of the brush when it makes contact with the tension,,,,,that bounce.....ahhhhhhhhhhhh.........

I have been playing with canvas paper and canvas sheets for my Watercolors, it is fun for a different effect.
Arches paper will win hands down for me.

I paint on stretched canvas but have been known to paint on anything from wood to large stones in my past. So I am open to anything that paint would adhere to! :)

I paint on paper with watercolors and prefer Arches rough or cold press.

I paint with an acrylic/gouache hybrid on board. Use to paint with oil on canvas but I did not like the flex of the canvas or the drying time of the oil.

I paint with acrylic I paint on canvas, canvas board, watercolor paper, canvas paper and gesso masonite.

When I paint with oils, it's on stretched canvas only.

I prefer to paint on wood pannels, I prepare the surface so its Smooth enough to work on . I love the feeling much more than canvas :)

'...the brush when it makes contact with the tension...', I have to agree Marlene, there is a most sensuous allure to a brush stroke that glides on the floating matrix of canvas or linen, inches away from a wall...

For my watercolors I prefer Arches 300lb CP paper. I usually use full sheets - but have been known to paint on quarter sheets - haven't painted in a while - still have paper and paint.

Linen is my favorite.

Terrance, Marlene get a room! In all seriousness I use to love canvas and oil. I quit oils because I lost my sense of smell to turpentine. Started to pin canvas on the wall and got use to not having any flex.

I paint on Arches 140# cold press

With my 3d framed pieces, I usually paint on distressed wood.. and follow whatever the wood dictates...If there happens to be a knot...I treat it as a gift and turn it into the sun.

It depends on what I'm drawing or painting.

Watercolor: watercolor painting, different papers for different techniques.
Pastel: pastel paper that has the sandpaper surface (UArt 400)
Acrylic: canvas or canvas board
Pencil or pen: dollar store sketch books -- and yes, they're acid-free. Inexpensive, and the hard untextured drawing surface works well for how I like to draw.

Ronald, haha!
Anyone who doesn't think painting is a sensual experience is missing out!

I have painted on many mediums from furniture, glass, masonite, paper, and lots of canvas. I like to make my own canvases. Painting in acrylics or oils on canvas is my preferred choice.

Seems like everyone has their own preference but its interesting to see what all of us artists can turn into works of art. After looking through many of your galleries I was very impressed with all the talent. Phyllis,Linda, marlene, janine, roger, and those are just a few! Love the skill levels of everyone.

Sorry to hear that Ronald...especially that turpentine is not a 'necessary' ingredient of oil painting - if people were told that years ago, many would not be suffering today. Oil painting, on linen is so sensual...its almost sexual LOL!!!

I used to paint, using either oils or acrylics, on stretched canvas, then when to canvas boards because they were cheaper and easier to store. Over the past year I have now gone over to stretched watercolour paper to save even more space and costs! I find that I don't really notice much difference in the painting experience, combined with the 'pound store' fine brushes I often use! I also get more detail in a smaller space on paper, still using the same oil/ acrylic paint.
I forgot to say for digital painting the costs of the 'canvas' and subsequent storage are so small that I do not think they can be measured in the real world!

I don't think anybody would call the way I paint "sensual". I attack that surface, beat up on it pretty good that's way I like the panels, stretched canvas can't stand up to the way I paint.

I love canvas. Much more forgiving than paper.
